    Hadn't heard of Longpoint until a few days ago, first time I've seen a competitive cutting contest in HEMA.

    I don't understand a lot specifically about hema systems specifically. but I do have enough personal martial arts experience, friends in different systems and an open mind to look for the principles that bind them all together. this man demonstrated perfect dynamic stance/body movement combined with excellent timing of force. there's more to it of course, probably more than I'm aware. but that was the what I noticed right away. especially the stance work.

    You can still do a zwerch at an angel. Michael Chidester recently wrote an article about how they actually work better and are more likely than the horizontal interpretation.

    Why are HEMA competitions so cut-centric? How about some thrust contests? They can set up a bullseye target. And if that's too easy, then have a spinning disk with targets, or even a swinging "pendulum" target.

    If you think rapier is hard to ref, try sport fencing. I do both so I'm not bashing historical. Just from a judging perspective I am confident in saying it is harder to decipher. As a practitioner they are equally difficult.

    Anyone know what sword James was using for that? The triple-fullered design looks awesome.

      It's an Arms & Armor custom type XX. Longer blade and different pommel (hard to keep a good grip on the cone) than what's listed on the site. arms-n-armor.com/custom917.html To my knowledge, the original is a cut down version of this kind of sword, though I haven't seen the example it's based on. www.zornhau.de/source/schwertexkursion/ZEF-1.jpg

      It is. Guy ordered it and said it wasn't what he hoped, wanted something more Crecy like. Told him I wanted something that felt like a cross between a longsword and greatsword, and he said I would probably like it. It is and I do, I regret nothing.

      James let me hold this sword, and it is surprising not that heavy, not that long -- about the same size as an average feder (I've definitely seen longer feders) and maybe a half pound heavier.

    Win the Gold at LongPoint. Still play second fiddle... First thing Mike said to me was "Bet you wish you got to do that tie breaker" Boy do I ever. James executed those cuts excellently.

      To start all you need is some place to train. A mask and a sword. You can get a good nylon sword for about $100.
      Where in the Atlanta area are you? There are several schools in the area that can help you.

      I live in Morrow GA ( zip 30260 ), Metro ATL. I dont mind driving to learn. I'm interested in basic swords and the dual sword training(i think its called Rapiers). Any resources would be useful, This is all very interesting to me

      You have three good options in the area. All three are based in the Atlanta/Decatur area.
      Mine is the Atlanta Freifechter. We study German Longsword, Dussack, Sword and Buckler, and Ringen. Our website is fencingatl.com
      David Coblentz teaches rapier in Decatur. His website is decaturschoolofarms.com/
      The SCA teaches Rapier on Tuesday in Blackburn Park. They train also on Sundays at the same venue. You can contact them here facebook.com/groups/259276954180390/?fref=nf

      albion sells sparring swords for 600 euros and has some 550-650 fuctional swords. Can you import swords from Usa though?

      +JUDAS Im warning you because in greece we cant import anything RESEMBLING a sword (alluminum sparring, movie props erc.) let alone real swords from abroad, both EU and USA... Getting a fancy shotgun or rifle ofcourse is allowed but these things are safer... right?

      There are a few clubs in the south of Spain.
      I recommend you to check the hema alliance website to see if there are any near you, they have maps with hema clubs - go to World Wide Clubs and then Western Europe.
      (I'm not directly giving you the link because I might get flagged for spam).

    I wonder why they don't go electric for rapier fencing? They make wireless buzzers for 'Olympic' style fencing. For the longsword, they could go electric, too. Just wear a lame like in sabre or foil.

    • @arscheerio
      @arscheerio 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this takes away from the historic aspect of the sport, but it would greatly benefit the ability to score points. Refs would still have to look at right of way but that's it, really.

    • @teakew8217
      @teakew8217 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Electric measures contact, not quality.

    • @b19931228
      @b19931228 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Blake Piercy Because HEMA sparring isn't about who "touches" his opponent a split seconds faster.
      You have to factor in edge alignment, angle of sword swing, and the intent of harm.
      Electric systems can hardly judge those.

  • @PandaKnight52
    @PandaKnight52 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    those cuts looked Awful. part o cutting should be about performing a cut as you would in a fight. if he did that in a fight He would be "dead". all it is, is a show of strength and some technique

    • @themanual2526
      @themanual2526 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yay, Can't wait for you to come to the next tournament and show us how great you cut.

    • @shrekas2966
      @shrekas2966 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i think you dont know what tatami cutting is for.

    • @PandaKnight52
      @PandaKnight52 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not saying I cut great but the technique is wrong. Your aim is not to cut through the mat but perform cuts as you would in a real fight and thus they should cut through the mat. his cuts would leave him open (if you take them one at a time) as with a simple nachriesen he would have no time to recover. Minimal effort should be out into the cut, just enough to get through. Not an almighty wooshka. If the target is too hard to do that too then perhaps a different target is necessary.

    • @shrekas2966
      @shrekas2966 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PandaKnight52 again, you dont understand wat tatamis are for.
      This is just to demonstrate cutting technique and edge alignment.
      I suggest you looking at original tatami cutters of tameshigiri. They do these wide swings with katanas, because they wont cut if you dont put power to the cuts.

    • @PandaKnight52
      @PandaKnight52 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then they have no place in HEMA. it shows bad technique(save for edge alignment) and Tameshigiri is a Japanese tradition and has it's place with the Japanese martial arts not in HEMA. Cutting is about performing the cuts with precision, through repetition. The wide stance of Tameshigiri I also have a problem with but no legs to stand on because I'm not a practitioner of the Japanese martial arts. If that is the only way to use Tatamis then they are a shit target to show proper technique from a HEMA stand point.
