I speak the sober truth. I used to play for Stevenage chess team (board 3). One game, playing white, I checkmated my opponent with a Queen's side castle. Like most of my games (1980s), I have long lost the score.

Yeah you can look at Morphy's games and claim that he plays like a "2400"
But put any grandmaster in Morphy's era with the available chess knowledge back then and I'm not sure they could invent and innovate to that extent
Also if Morphy played even 10 games against 2400's he would quickly adapt and improve. Even skeptics concede that he'd probably be a 2700 given modern knowledge and training

That castling checkmate would not have been possible if Morphy hadn't given up the rook at the start.

"[He] was just born in the wrong generation."
That gets you thinking. Imagine if he had been born a whole century later (1937) and lived longer. He still would have been at a fairly advanced age when chess computers started getting big, but there were a lot of great players who began to emerge at the time that could have given him a challenge.
Furthermore, assuming he had lived to an advanced age from that hypothetical date, he could have been damn near 90 (as of this writing) and probably still regularly participating in tournaments. It would be incredibly hilarious to see Hans "Wait Until They're Old" Niemann getting utterly humiliated by a man in his late eighties.

Can I tell you about a checkers tragedy. There was this insane player, who could beat the strongest engines with ease. He was the only one who could do it. So these people created this new engine that was insanely powerful and good. When they tried to play it against the master, he had already died just a measly few hours before. We will never know if he lost.
