    I interpreted this song in the aspect of my brother. He killed himself, and it put me in a very dark place where I thought he was there and I could still hear him. The part where she tells him “just let me go we will meet again soon” makes me cry almost every time so I tend not to listen to it around people.

    Love this band and this song!
    I had such a different interpretation however. I always understood it as being a metaphor for mental health. The woman in the song was walking around the empty house of her mind, lost in the negative thoughts during a mental breakdown, while the male singer tries to support her. And when he replies to her saying “tell her that I miss our little talks” implying that he’s used to helping her deal with her inner demons.
    Anyway thanks for making this video, it’s interesting to hear the original intent behind the song
    Please do more Of Monsters and Men explanations in the future! Maybe Your Bones?

    I've seen these lyrics written two ways: "Some days I CAN'T even TRUST myself" and "Some days I can't even DRESS myself." It's probably "trust" because she's not sure if her mind is tricking her, but for me the "can't even dress myself" highlights her deep sadness and loneliness about him dying. My sister's husband is 20 years older than her and he's had dementia for the past 3 years. This song really hits home when I think of her in their home taking care of her dear husband who barely recognizes any of the people he loved. 😢

    This might be really triggering to some people so please be careful.
    Something that few people ever seem to talk about is the creaking sounds during "You're gone, gone, gone away; I watched you disappear" part. I always thought it was an interesting sound effect to add, especially to this part, and it makes me think that perhaps the man she's singing about committed suicide by hanging himself, making it so that "I watched you disappear" mean she found him like that, which would certainly lead to a "haunting" of her loved one. Either that, or she's so distraught over his death that she's contemplating her own death of the same aforementioned nature. I know the sound could just be of an old, empty house settling, but it has always felt far more ominous and _heartbreaking_ than that. I've nearly broken down crying listening to that specific part of the song. What's everyone else's thoughts?

      I heard it at the end as well. My immediate response was it sounded like the creaking of a noose (possibly because that was the ambience of Keaton Henson’s Oliver Dalston Browning), but I feel the creaking of the house works just as well.

      @kayleekeen4238 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Another odd line that no one never mentions is "don't listen to a word I say! The screams all sound the same!" it makes me think that either the woman really is having a breakdown or that whatever is singing with her might not actually be her husband. Maybe something more... Sinister.

    • @starling1226
      @starling1226 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know I’m three years late but I thought it was the girl who hung herself because of her husband dying (maybe he died of cancer because it eats at you making you “disappear”) . The part the says “now wait wait wait for me, please hang around, I’ll see you when I fall asleep” I can imagine it’s the girl saying this saying she’ll see him in the afterlife. And “just let me go, we’ll meet again soon”

    This used to be my freaking song like 3-4 years ago, back then (and even now) I clouded the meaning of the lyrics behind the beat of the music, and I used to dance and sing this upbeat happy song, not knowing it had deepness and sadness smeared all throughout the lyrics. It feels nice to see that my taste in music as a 13-14 year old was as genuine and meaningful as my taste in music now. However, now that I think about it, the upbeat music is a great way to hide the melancholy in the lyrics, especially when you like fans to create their own meaning to each song. Great video!

    I didn't know it was about her losing a loved one I always assumed it was about her struggle with her sanity kind of like multiple personalities and his voice is her conscious trying to tell her the truth or trying to keep her sane and perhaps she thought of him as an imaginary friend based on that they used to play when they were young but overall your explanation makes a lot of sense and I'm kind of glad I heard it

    This song came out around the time my mum was diagnosed with the onset of Alzheimer's. I watched the impact it had not only on her, but also on my dad. The lyrics are so wonderfully written, I felt they perfectly summed up the emotions being experienced and the impact it was having on my father as the person he loved most dear was slipping away. He never got over having his wife, his soulmate, taken from him and sadly passed away without her knowing. Whilst the song will always bring tears to my eyes, the lyrics mean so much to me and will always remain included in my playlists.

    My seeing of it is a wife lost her husband and is left with his ghost haunting her either mentally or physically. She explains how the depression over his death is so crippling that she can barely function. She used to talk to him out loud but has since been so overwhelmed with grief and denial that she has since stopped. Her husband who now is stuck in the house watching her grieve herself to pieces is lamenting about how he misses when she used to talk to him and even though hes dead he is still watching her suffer and he hates it. He wants her to live her life without this incredible weight on her shoulders and he knows his presence is making it worse because even though shes in denial she can still feel his presence. He knows hanging on to her is whats causing her to suffer but he can't let go and move on. Finally she tells him to stop holding on to the hope that she'll move on and be happy with someone else and just let her end it all so she can be with him. Part of him wants to be with her but he knows deep down thats not the best thing for her. He didn't have a choice when he died she still does and she can choose to move on instead of dwelling on his death and trying to end her own life. Don't listen to a word I say the screams all sound the same could mean that even though she wants to end it all to be with him she knows thats not what he would have wanted and even though the husband wants her to move on without him a part of him still selfishly hopes she won't listen to reason and kills herself anyway to be with him. The ship is a metaphor for death and how they both hope that death will guide them to be together one day safe to shore.

    This may seem very weird but I had a unique experience with this song. I related it to me and my pet "Big Boy". Last Friday he went missing which never has happen. About 1 am I went driving around the neighborhood to see if I could locate him and this song was playing on the radio. I have hearing damage which causes me to rarely understand lyrics in music.
    When the verses
    "You're gone, gone, gone away
    I watched you disappear
    All that's left is a ghost of you
    Now we're torn, torn, torn apart
    There's nothing we can do
    Just let me go, we'll meet again soon"
    were playing, I could hear so clear it was shocking and a great feeling of sadness came over me. I found out the next morning at that time my "Big Boy" had already past away before I went looking for him. To me this song feels like it is him and I communicating to each other. Very sad, I love you Big Boy.

    Little Talks will always be my favourite song. Even though I don't really listen to Of Monsters and Men all that much, they really created something special with this tune. I love the explanation. I assumed it was about a lost loved one when I first heard it. I was 9 years old. I was still very torn from the loss of someone dear to me when the song became popular. Little Talks made my heart dance. The trumpet melody was so uplifting. When I sat down to read the lyrics, I instantly connected to those words and became even more captivated by the song. I knew it was about loss. I was feeling the same way. This was probably the first time I really used music for comfort and healing instead of plain entertainment. Before that I never knew music could bring me that much hope. Little Talks will always have a special place in my heart, mind, and soul.

      It could also be from being depressed. I remember when I was I use to sleep a lot cause dreaming was better than being awake. Maybe for her that’s how she connected with her husband through dreams. But idk could be multiple meanings

    The lines, "You are gone gone gone away. All that is left is a ghost of you" - They passed away. "We are torn torn torn apart, there's nothing we can do, just let me go and we'll meet again soon" - is a suicide reference. "Now wait wait wait for me. Please hang around. I will see you when I fall asleep." - is in reference to don't kill yourself I will give you closer in your dreams. Or at least that is how I take it when I am playing the song on my guitar.

    I have adored this song ever since I first heard it and the video seems so much sweeter now! ☺️
    At the begining she crash lands on the ground and helps the men survive the monsters that attack them, then at the end she's so happy to be reunited! 💗
    It's also SO good as the monsters remind me of one of my favourite video games, "Shadow Of The Colossus" 🥰

    The reason this song is so sad is not because of the loss, its because most of us will never know a love that is so true and so enduring. And many of us will never be that for another. 2 many have no idea what creating that kinda situation takes. Only interested in flickering, transient, ego stroking ' love '. So there it is, we gotta make peace with that!

    My take on "...truth may vary, this ship will take our bodies safe to shore..." is the Truth is God or gods and all the different takes on religion and life after death. As in, no matter what is actually real, we all end up the same, dying, or in the same place, wherever that may be.

    I wrote the track, and a scout took it, and we intended it to be about Kitchi to Kippi or Big Springs in Cooks Michigan. You can hear the creaking of the boat as we venture across the springs and yell into the air all recorded on a Tascam in 2006. Before time itself began, I'm an extensive writer in the music industry and for those who have been to big springs look out over to the river half way across and yell, "Hey"!

    The way I take it is that there was a young couple and the husband died when they were still a young married couple. She is kinda going crazy with depression and anxiety. If you notice some lyrics of the husband is him saying that she should be with him and the others say that she shouldn't. I think that it is her inner self debating suicide, and one side of her imagination is saying that her husband wants her to sk they can be together, while the other side is her husband saying thag she needs to lef him go, despite their love, and that she needs to live the best life she can. Hence the line "dont listen to a word I say, the screams all sound the same" implying he doesnt want her to listen to him at all because it would conflict her. If she doesn't listen them, and only then, will she be able to move on and live her life, the way he would really want her too. In the end she realizes this, and she decides that though it will hurt, she will move on remembering him, but not letting it cripple her mental health.

    I thought the song was about an old couple, but the woman was dying. And like, the man was trying to make her last days good. By like, visiting their old house from when they were young, and remembering their past.
    That or some Titanic movie kinda thing.

    I always thought the song was about suicide. The ship was the person's body the passengers were the voices in the person's head some of the voices were pushing to suicide. At end of song you hear something hanging, implying suicide by hanging. Even the video passengers face death but one fight the demons till she submitted to the last monster, monster of man

    Hey (Ik this is the third time I’ve commented I’m a needy person okay) these guys at my Church do not like Twenty One Pilots for no apparent reason and I seek the Unicorn King’s counsel on how to respond

    • @silversamm
      @silversamm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the reason is not apparant then maybe you should start asking them for an explanation? it might be difficult to see when you're a fan of something, but there are many possible reasons why people dislike them. Maybe it's something simple: a genre they don't like (probably based on a very small selection of songs) or they hink it's overhyped. Then you can try and bridge the gap by selecting songs closest to their preferred genres. Or they have checked them out already and do have a good reason not to like it, then I don't think you should try to get them involved, unles you're willing to exchange tastes and check out their recommendations in return.

    I swear to God your explanation was exactly like mine. The first time I heard this song was in 2018 they year my husband passed away. At that time I was in Europe waiting for him to meet me and his child but I haven’t heard from him for 2 weeks. The third week his doctor called me and was trying to convince me to give her my approval to disconnect his ventilator cuz he had no advanced directive I guess. I was so ducking wholes telling the doctor what the fuck are U talking about let me talk to him. She said you can’t he is brain dead. I said no but he will respond to me once he hears my vice. She never let me have a chance. I had huge argument with the whole hospital. Couldn’t give my Ok to let them end his life so I made a POA to his parents to make that hard decision cuz I wasn’t even in the US that time. I was in shock. I thought it’s a lie, trap, test, or whatever. I still have some kind of these feelings. Anyways it’s a long story I actually forgot the rap reason I decided to reply maybe cuz I’m still grieving. Just remembered, I just wanted to tell you the first time I heard that song, I immediately related it to my grieving situation.

    they can say what they want about what it's about.. it doesn't make sense in the context of how it's sung
    to me it sounds more like an old couple and the wife has dementia and the husband is gently taking care of her. and as someone who has known more members in my family than i care to consider with forms of dementia it sounds like a caregiver and their spouse having a conversation during a lucid period
    "you're gone, gone, gone away
    i watched you disappear
    all that's left is a ghost of you"
    dementia is insidious.. it kills the person that was years before the body stops functioning.
    "i watched you disappear
    all that's left is a ghost of you"

    There is a better interpretation on another video in reference to her meaning of words. Also he is trying to talk her out of suicide from depression, which is why she tells him wait, wait I'll see you when I sleep.

    I always thought she is an old lady with a mental disorder, and she is going insane and needs the help of her husband for everything. At some point in the song, she dies, with he thinks is the only way she can finally find peace, without the pain she experiences every day. Now, both feel lonely and miss each other. And he hopes to join her soon

  • @michaelwellen2866

    I always thought they were both ghosts, and the wife ghost is trapped by her thoughts, and the husband ghost wants her to move on.
