    Steel is....better than having nothing. It's only real virtue is that it's dirt cheap.
    Level III is an awkward thing. It stops 7.62 nicely in both the NATO and AK formats but doesn't do as well against 5.56 which is likely to be the most common threat profile from rifles in this country.
    If Level III does work for you, you can get a poly plate at half the weight and not have to fiddle with spall mitigation sleeves or layers.

      100% Agree! Steel is not for everyone given the spalling and weight. Level 3 poly plates are definitely a go to if the budget allows.

      I tell people there is a reason no modern military uses steel armor.
