I was 14, living in a small city in the south of Portugal. Bought this album in the only record shop of the only mall, went home, put in on, sitting on the ground with my phones on, volume to the max. I was born again that day.
This is the best Iron Maiden album, a concept album that brought me to the metal music. Like many of the people's comments i was in 8th grade in a small town in the Atacama Desert in Chile. My father and i were listening to the BBC radio at the time. My dad was a big Pink Floyd. Great music and even better voice from Bruce Dickinson, and master musicians Steve Harris, Niko, and Adrian Smith. I remember going to the arcade joint to play the Powerslave pinball machine and it use to be a line of kids waiting their turn to play it. The Arcade place only played heavy metal inside. The 80's metal kids best
Your small town in Chile sounds a lot less backwater than a lot of towns up here around then... Many uneducated people up here thought heavy metal music was teaching kids to worship Satan or whatever. Glad you got to hear this back then!
This is my favourite album of all time! Being only 26 years old I got some strange looks as was by far the youngest at our latest Iron Maiden tribute night where I live! We now live in a world of complete absurdity and filled with imbeciles. This album really transports me back in time where I can imagine a much better world and much better time to be alive! So jealous of each and every single one of you that experienced it in its present day!
@@AdamJonesIOM This answer is going to be a little more detailed and nuanced than some. The late 80s were indeed a wonderful time for many people, not so good for others. For example, there was still a lot of crime in NYC in the 80s which was lessening towards the end of that decade. Other cities were clean and relatively crime free, or low in violent crime. The internet wasn't a thing, certainly not the www, and there was no such thing as social media. All of our news, whether local, world, financial or entertainment came from the TV, newspapers and magazines. The only way you could publicly share your opinion was in letters to the editor, which may or may not be published in later editions. But this also meant that information was limited, and you had to really hunt for obscure things like info on bands. There was a real rush at being able to find rare records or bootleg recordings, or VHS copies of rare movies. Now, almost anything can be found with a bit of diligence on TH-cam or a streaming service. Info was in some ways more controlled by big media than now, although this has been changing again in the last 5-10 years with fewer Google results for given searches. But 30+ years on, we have medical advances which are saving lives that would have been condemned in the late 80s, and routinely make life better for people. Lasik surgery for eyesight, antivirals for HIV, flu vaccines, new dental filling compounds, so much has improved since then. We were pre-AIDS epidemic, way pre-Oxy epidemic. We were four years out from the Rodney King riots, and four years after William Gibson published Neuromancer. We still thought of Pluto as a planet. Affirmative action was a thing, but there were very few participation trophies. The hardest drug a teenager could find was marijuana, and stuff like crack and heroin were rare in most circles. Sports Illustrated had the hottest models for the swimsuit edition, fashion models who were fit, healthy and natural, and not some woke inclusionist Flubber candidates. Music from bands like Maiden was in the charts! We had Whitesnake, Poison, Motley Crue and pre-Black Metallica. Even Christian metal bands like Stryper were making waves in the mainstream. Do i miss those times? Yeah. For me, like many, they were some good, good times.
When I bought this as a schoolboy it was a rainy day. I had to bycicle home for about 30 minutes and it was wrapped in a plastic bag hung over the steering bell, hoping it would reach my home undameged. Almost succeeded but for one small dent in the middle of the sleeve edge, where it touched the bell and of course got wet. Still got the album and now, 35 years later, it's a sweet memory but at the time I was devastated.... Great album, I think probably their best with Bruce, together with Powerslave.
this was my first Maiden album. got it when i was 11 or 12 in 88 or 89 and it absolutely blew me away. Not only Maiden are at their peak power, but the songwriting is literally out of this world.

A soundscape of percussive precision mixed with soaring sonics seemlessly pieced together to pierce your soul, heart, and mind. A lasting impression this album made on so many a young human, being a masterful melodic mind-blowing magnificent experience. Thank you Iron Maiden, underrated in the court of public opinion, yet believed and beloved by literally millions of fans from all over this earth, all walks of life, even catching in various fans of other genres outside of the metal realm. This was the first and last for a several things with Maiden. This was the last album where Bruce still has his raw vocals and soaring highs.
