He's fortunate to a citizen of a country like Australia which placed him on the spotlight all these years. I reckon if he's from a third world country where lost lives are seen as collateral damage, the US Gov would have made him vanish.
None of its previous governments lifted a finger to help him. It is almost as far gone as the US and the UK.
Australia itself just jailed the most famous and most innocent whistle blower, so don't think people are stupid, we are not stupid, as far as Julian is concerned, it is still very controversial what boundary he has crossed.

What happened about the rape charges against Assange from Sweden? It's no question that Assange had his 1st amendment's right in publishing sensitive material, but don't tell us that agents whose names were mentioned were to have been simply asked to go home from, say, Afghanistan after being caught collaborating with the enemy. Aside from that, were the rape charges from Sweden simply made up? Why did Assange deny them and not be willing to at least be questioned about it by Swedish prosecutors and instead ran to the Ecuadorian Embassy to hide out for 7 years until the charges were not able to be prosecuted? Something is wrong with this wholesome, homecoming picture, with Julian portrayed as a martyr for press freedom with so much controversy still hanging like heavy humidity in the hot air.
It was a con to get him out of the uk and be kidnapped/killed by the usa

Julian Assange will go down in history as a pioneer of journalism. And as an egomaniac who often caused uproar. His practice was characterized by a fundamentalism that often did more harm than good.

There is no doubt the British legal system is the best in the world, but nothing is perfect. I would add that there is no smoke without fire. If you break the law, you must be punished. What has happened to Assange should be a warning to others who might feel that 'freedom of speech' comes before the law.
