"No matter the pain I'll keep living. So when I die, I'll feel I did the best I could." This is the author speaking through the character. In the manga you can see it even more cleary.
I dont think the thanking each other was an indication that their friendship is now worse. I think it was arguably worse before, when Gon kept making mistakes and Killua thought it was normal to clean up after him and shoulder it all Now, Gon is genuine in his apology and Killua has found a purpose, so if anything, their friendship has solidified further Killua telling ikalgo that friends dont thank each other comes from the fact that he has a somewhat controrted idea of what a friend is. Hes only ever had gon and hes always helping him and not getting much thanks in return So my interpretation of that scene is that Killua realizes that a friendship is a give and take, you recieve something so you thank them, you make a mistake so you apologize. Thats also what he expects from gon now As for their expressions after they said bye, i think theyre just upset theyre separating :( they know its necessary, i agree with you that they both need time apart but its not because they think the friendship has been tarnished or ruined At least thats my interpretation
19:44 Gon is not untrustworthy, he is stubborn and sometimes selfish , but never in the manga he has been untrustworthy, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to have so many friends. He made some mistakes but being untrustworthy…that’s a bit much. Killua and him parting ways is not related to how he treated him during the palace assault as you guy suggested, but because is with alluka here, anyone is a liability to killua as Illumi or other family members could use Gon as leverage. That’s why it is best for them to part way for now. Love your reaction by the way. There is so much perspective and insights you bring to the discussion.
This! Another interpretation that I like, is that the symbolic price Killua and Gon have to pay for Nanika restoring Gon's entire future, is this separation. In the CA arc Killua was constantly questioning whether he deserved to stay by Gon's side, and his conclusion, after having been unable to stop Gon from throwing away his life, was that he didn't. Killua is not angry at Gon at all. He just thinks that Gon no longer needs him (because of what happened in the CA arc). And Gon is also filled with guilt, which is why he's letting Killua go, even though Gon's plan was always to introduce Killua to Ging.. It just hurts. Especially the "If we stay here any longer.." line. They clearly don't want to separate, but Killua wants what's best for Gon, and Gon wants what's best for Killua, and they don't understand that they both want the same thing: to stay together. They will definitely reunite.
When I watched ep 147 I was BAWLING i mean BAWLING my eyes out. It took me months to go back to watch the credits of Gon and Killua's journey together.
For this episode me and my ex couldn't bring ourselves to do a last HxH 2011 rewach, a tradition which we have been doing yearly for 4-5 years (this was in December 2021, at this point we knew our friendship and relationship wasn't the same, just like Gon and Killua knew at this episode). Almost a year later we said farewell for the last time. Haven't seen her since then because I was flying away to another country the next day. The difference was that we didn't face away like our bois here because we stared at each other until the doors of the elevator closed, so we could see each other sad expressions. It wasn't planned. Just happened that way. It was really gutting. A kick in the liver. 9 years of relationship over. 10 years of being best friends. Haven't managed to rewatch again this show which was our top 1 absolute in any media! Now I just do it through others if I see their reactions are worthwhile. Thanks for this. Lindsay said something true about the things both Gon and Killua experienced, the things they learned about each other, that matters even if they are never gonna see each other again. The other person stays with you forever in some way or another. That's a consolation if they falling down wasn't too awful. I have hope we gonna see a reunion of those rascals again, even if it's a special chapter made by Togashi as a way to honor their bond.
they were kids who went a through a traumatic experience together losing people left and right, I think they both know that they heavily underestimated the real world. they're still friends but they just don't know how to talk about what just happened to them that almost cost them their life so best to part ways and not risk each other's lives again
Just like how Mito and Kaito are more important than Killua and Ging to Gon, Alluka-Nanika are more important to Killua. He always questioning what his dream is even though he always together with Gon, which is sad seeing how close they are. Such a realistic situation, because even if we are best friends doesn't mean we are worth more than their precious one. It's not that i really hate Gon, but yeah, Killua can't living forever just to clean Gon's mess
What are you talking about? 😂 Did you even watch the show? Killua's no. 1 being Gon is the VERY reason Alluka is even outside right now. And there's no way you actually believe Kite is more important to Gon than Killua is.. lmao. Even Leorio and Kurapika are more important to Gon. But Leorio and Kurapika weren't killed. That's precisely what makes this separation so heart-wrenching. It's a mutual breakup of two people who still very much love each other, but realise that staying together isn't a viable option right now. They needed a break, but they will definitely reunite
I know Killua said don't thank your friends but i think that is wrong. You should appreciate and thank your friends or your partner. Yes you don't need to say thank you all the time, but you can show appreciation and not just expectation with those you are closest with. That or i have never had a next level friendship. But I like trying to show appreciation and a thank you is a form of appreciation, perhaps the lowest form but a form nonetheless.
I absolutely would and do thank my friends. Apologize and talk and everything. I get what Killua says but I just think it’s short sighted in terms of proper communication
Yeah I think it shows Killia matured more than that their relationship deteriorated. I don't think never saying thanks to you friends is a concept that is supposed to last a lifetime
Everything you guys said. Killua's comment about Gon being second always pangs my heart because it's not because Alluka bests Gon, it's that Gon let Killua down. Gon was the light but near the end sucked up everything else to produce it.
@detectivemittons9020 Gon is arguably still Killua's no. 1, which makes this episode even more tragic. We know that Killua is very insecure and selfless when it comes to Gon. He felt like he couldn't really do anything for Gon in the CA arc, and even though WE readers/viewers know Killua was one of the most valuable players, Killua doesn't view it like that. As far as Killua is concerned, all of the things he did to contribute, were for nothing, because Gon still ended up throwing his life away. And even though it wasn't Killua's fault, Killua probably thought "Bisky was right", when he 'let' Gon succumb to rage. We also have to remember that Alluka is ONLY free right now because Killua wanted to save Gon. I think many people really WANT to believe that Killua has gotten over his self-doubt and that he no longer needs Gon, but that's just not what's being indicated by Togashi. Someone doesn't go from being the light of your life, your most valuable person, to someone you've chosen to no longer want to be around, just because they disappointed you ONCE (and I don't think Gon ever disappointed Killua in the first place. Killua is only ever disappointed in himself). Yes, Killua has now found a concrete purpose, but that's not why he's leaving. For the entirety of the CA arc, Killua was wondering whether he deserved to stay by Gon's side, and because, in the end, he wasn't able to make a meaningful difference (in his own opinion), he's concluded that he doesn't deserve Gon. And Gon is clearly only letting Killua leave because he feels guilty about what he put Killua through. When Bisky asked Gon what he was going to do when he found Ging, Gon stated that the first thing he'd do, would be to introduce him to Killua. Ging and Killua are literally right there, but Gon chooses to be selfless. In conclusion, Killua and Gon are both letting each other go out of selflessness, but they don't understand what the other is doing. Gon is happy that Killua found a concrete purpose, and feels undeserving of Killua, and Killua just feels terrible, because he wasn't able to protect Gon. He doesn't want to burden Gon any longer than he already has. It's clear that Killua's character arc has to end in Gon pursuing Killua, because as it stands, Killua feels just as unworthy of love as he felt before he met Gon. He doesn't understand that Gon wants Killua to stay (even though Gon has told him as much on multiple occassions). Sad stuff
This episode is so brilliant....the whole convo btw Koala guy and Kite!!! I could talk about it for weeks it's so so good and deep and true and I love that 2 manga characters going through death and rebirth are thinking about this...🤯🤯🤯🤯 I wonder if Togashi talked about this topic somewhere Gon and Killua.... I totally disagree with your take on their relationship they both grew up for the better and are still best friends... The timing is what it is but good for them to separate for a while and think about their future bc they went through a lot (Gon's suicide attempt can't just be forgotten so easily, and Killua's anguish bc of it) and bc Killua has to take care of Alluka (not bc he doesn't want to be with Gon anymore) and when they meet again it will be great without a doubt There is so much to talk about in this episode it's frustrating to not be able to discuss it with someone irl 😅😅
The Koala dialogue was so existential, on a level that you would never expect an anime/manga would include... The dialogue is completely what you would read about a character in a Dostoevsky book like The Idiot or Brothers Karamazov... The koala has the same mind/philosophy as the people serving their time in the Gulags working in Siberia under the Soviet Union back then.
@@floatingtigerscarriff6664 I love Brothers Karamazov and those kind of topics in general and I love that from the characters' perspective having experienced death and rebirth something that could be just a belief for a real life person is brought to the next level, asking themselves what all this means and finding an answer ...like Dostoevsky I like when the author put some of his own thoughts in different characters to explore different perspectives and the reader can relate to one of them and understand where everyone is coming from...how great would that be to have a convo with Togashi about these topics!

the resolve in killuas eyes to take care of his sister is noteworthy. he was following gon in the first place because he didn’t know what he wanted out of life. gon picked up on that when they made eye contact
I think it was written to be interpreted as people saw it and there is no real truth unless we see them again one day. I personally am in the team that says that the friendship is not the same in fact and that something broke when they separated in front of Pitou, but I see the point saying its just the sadness of separation
The choice of Greed Island ending is really good yeah, though I think saying their friendship deteriorated post dodgeball match is a complete misreading of the situation. Killua's frustration stems from Gon not accepting his help, and the dodgeball match was the high point of Gon accepting Killua's help. It had been very very hard for Gon to accept Killua doing things for him for a long time, and this was the tipping point where he finally accepted Killua sacrificing for him. The end of GI was "Gon wants to show off Killua to Ging", not in a "not ready to meet Ging alone" way, but more in a "This is my best friend and please see how awesome he is" way. The seperation here is... both of them realising that if they talk anymore they won't be able to seperate, and both knowing they need to.

You just know that Gon wants Killua to come and meet Ging. What makes this separation so heartbreaking, isn't that Killua and Gon no longer love each other: what makes it so heartbreaking, is the fact that they still do! They both think that this is what's best for the other, bc they're not communicating.

WHY ANIME CHARACTERS DON'T HUG WHEN THEY SAY GOODBYE???
Not everyone is a hugging type, it's more common in the west I think.
Why they have to hug?? That's your culture
I believe that's rather cringe. Just say goodbye is enough, no need for stupid affection-demonstrating contacts.
the real answer is that it's not within japanese culture to hug in public lol. it's seen as very rude and is discouraged.

He feels undeserving of Killua, and his thought process is "even though I want Killua to stay, the plan was for Killua to look for a purpose in life, and now that he's found said purpose, I have to let him go". You just know that Gon wants Killua to come and meet Ging.
What makes this separation so heartbreaking, isn't that Killua and Gon no longer love each other: what makes it so heartbreaking, is the fact that they still do! They both think that this is what's best for the other, bc they're not communicating.
