Geddy's original '72 jazz bass is NOT made in Japan. It's made in the USA. The signature bass Fender makes was MIJ until 2012. Now they're made in Mexico.

The fact is - the Jazz Bass can cover pretty much everything. The Precision Bass, and the StingRay, are pretty much on the 5% outer-most spectrum of both sides of bass tone, in general. Otherwise, any halfway decent Jazz Bass can make it happen, anywhere in between.

I think they just sound different but I prefer the mexican one for its "brightness" (I don't know if its the good word). Or I should say I prefer the pickups on the mexican one because if you swap the pickups, it will be the japanese the brightest (I think... but I don't know 😂 )

I know what you mean I also like de mexican pickups better.

It might be just because of the maple fingerboard. They are usually brighter in tone when comparing it to a rosewood fingerboard.

    A few questions, please -
Were the strings, gauges of those strings, and manufacturers, the same? AND, most importantly, were the strings about the same age? It might be my imagination, but I think strings "mellow" with age. I'm not talking as they get oil and dirt on them, I believe being in proper pitch longer let's the strings find their "natural" Zen state.

Sorry to say the the mim has very old strings that were boiled, the mij has 6 month old strings, but im prety sure they are the same gauge. Mim diadario, mij has earnie ball
