im a little stunned with their review of "Unforgiven". i grew up sort of being forced to watch the old westerns my father liked and i always thought they were cheesy and boring, watching the combination of Unforgiven and Tombstone as i was entering my 20s made me appreciate the Western and go back and watch those old westerns in a new light and rediscover gems like High Noon and Rio Bravo. i have never heard of "London Kills Me" but it looks like the kind of film that would interest me, and that is exactly why i use to watch Siskel and Ebert. for the interesting not big mainstream movies i was aware of.
Haven't seen Unforgiven in a long time, but I remember enjoying it. I'd have to see it again, but whether I'd agree or disagree with Siskel & Ebert, they raise a valid point. Take Richard Harris out and it's an unchanged story. He didn't need to be there at all. Doesn't necessarily mean it hurts the film much, but there might well have been more "stuff" crammed in than was needed.
@@robvangessel3766 English Bob was sort of a parallel character to The Scofield Kid. Had the kid continued down on his path of violence, he might have been a lot like old Bob and how he turned out. Another parallel character the critics mentioned wasn’t necessary is Ned. It was hinted on that he was pretty crazy in his youth like William Munny was, albeit not nearly as crazy, but pretty similar to that of Will. The difference he made, kinda like what The Kid made at the end of the movie, was to hang up the gun and renounce killing. Only his sins of his past outweighed his redemption and finally caught up with him by the hands of Little Bill. Will Munny saw that, in the end, and went back full speed ahead in the killing life sort of accepting his fate, at least what he thought was his fate. Little Bill’s last words were “I’ll see you in Hell William Munny.” And Will accepted that and simply replied “yeah”.
Their original review of Unforgiven is rather uneven but despite this Ebert still gave the movie a thumbs up according to the recap at the end of the show and the film went on to win 4 Oscars including Best Picture at the 65th Academy Awards, and as for Death Becomes Her, that's a film that I enjoyed more than these guys give it credit for, it even won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
wow I really didn't expect them to hate Death Becomes Her, it's a meanspirited FUNNY film, lol. Just enough scenery chewing from both lead actresses to ofput all the macabre over the top violence. A Balanced Black Comedy.
I dunno when siskel says 'Things happen to these people they don't do anything' I'm like WTF is he talking about they hate they're so full of hate they ruin everything good they ever have. And it's all their they do all of that to themselves, having it out in the greater world would not be the character study of these two spiteful highly motivated women it'd be FIDO which is also a great film, lol, wanting the movie to be a different film instead of appreciating it for what it is.
well its about them being unable to have nice things cuz they hate eachother so much. that's what's funny about it, they just missed the point on that one.
I finally took Unforgiven off my watch list. The film is very good but I don't think it's great because the story really should have lost some characters.
I also don't think Unforgiven is a Great Movie and definitely not worthy of a Best Picture Oscar Gene Hackman was just playing the same role he did in the French Connection, nothing new

I'm writing that Death Becomes Her will become available to stream on the streaming service Peacock on March 1, 2024.

I’ve never seen the movie (or even heard about it) but it was nice to see the great improv comic Josie Lawrence in the preview!
It is definitely one of my favorite movies to watch when I'm down because it makes me feel Great by the end...that and want to go to Italy

Worst review of Unforgiven I could ever listened. Sometimes these guys are a total disappointment
Roger actually re-reviwed Unforgiven later that year and publicly acknowledged that he got this one wrong, and gave it four stars.
Love this review. Unforgiven is so overrated. Later on Ebert changed his mind and siskel slammed him for it.
Definitely overrated movie , Film Critic Jeffrey Lyons had the same opinion.
