First consider full load current of HV winding of transformer. Keeping 20% as spare current value, next rounded off CT ratio to be selected. Say 80 ampere is current of transformer then select 100 ampere as primary current of the CT. Secondary CT current to be selected as per input current of the differential protection relay. Suppose relay input current as per manufacturer of the relay is 1 ampere, then CT ratio for HV Side CT would be 100 / 1. Now finalise LV side CT ratio as per corresponding current of HV and LV winding of the transformer. Suppose for example LV transformer current is 800 ampere, then select 1000 ampere as primary CT current of LV side. Now, we have to decide secondary current of this CT. First understand connections of HV & LV winding of the transformer. If both are either Star or Delta connected i.e. HV winding & LV winding both are Star connected (Star - Star) then 1000/1 ratio for LV winding is suitable. Considering connections of differential relay wires which are called pilot wires; during normal operation of the transformer from 0 load to full load, current shall be equal from both the CT's at any point of loading is the fundamental requirement. Moreover, in case of differential protection CT's, the class of CT's shall be class PS, where CT magnetising current saturation is studied and knee point voltage is taken into consideration. (If someone is using Microprocessor based differential protection relay, then class of CT requirement is derived from the relay input requirement as per catalogue of the relay. sathe1963@gmail.com Thanks!

In case of distribution transformer, current in the primary (high voltage) winding is always less than the current in the secondary winding. CT raio of primary & secondary winding always differ. In your explanation, you have shown same CT ratio for both windings. Besides, even in healthy condition also current in primary CT shall always be less than the current in secondary CT. Then the difference current will flow through the relay coil & shall trip the transformer. This is what I have predicted. Please throw more light on this matter to make me understand function of this relay correctly.
In conventional relay there is provision of matching CT in both side. And now a days in numerical relay no need of matching CT, there can be feed setting.

Relay setting is always kept higher then the normal Spill Current which is due to Differnce in CT Ratios and Lead Leangths.
