Don Cherry's Eternal Rhythm is one of the most instrumentally colourful free jazz albums.

Sad to see no Sun Ra, but still an excellent list, have listened to all except Naked City, will check it out

Decent list although I would say that i think to really understand how varied free jazz, avant garde & jazz fusion are they should be their own separate lists. And while I totally understand why, I think these types of lists tend to focus on records that are already in the canon. My list has a bunch of canon stuff on it too. it's really hard to avoid it, but lists should also try to push out of that a little more often.
Here's my Top Ten for what it's worth. Specifically, Free Jazz and mostly just off the top of my head.
    1.John Coltrane - Interstellar Space
2.Dave Holland Quartet - Conference of the Birds
    3.Anthony Braxton - For Alto
    4.Sam Rivers - Crystals
    5.Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity
6.Masayuki Takayangi & Karou Abe - Mass Projection
    7.Archie Shepp - The Magic of Ju-Ju
    8.Evan Parker - Monoceros
    9.Cecil Taylor - Silent Tongues
    10.Dave Burrell - Echo

Thank you very much for this list! It is true many of my choices are predictable, but I aimed my list for anyone interested in getting into the genre for the first time. On the other hand, I wanted to include only one album per artist.
I'll take a listen to your choices. Thanks again!

You might try Mujician-Colours Fulfilled, Evan Parker-Dark Rags, Cecil Taylor-Nailed, and the Irene Schweizer duet on Intakt Records with Han Bennink.

I thank you for your list; there are some new ones that you introduced me to that I want to hear more of. The ones I have owned for many years are Unit Structures and Shape of Jazz To Come. I would recommend Sound Grammar by Ornette Coleman which is a superb live album featuring two bass players which adds a fascinating angle to the sound; it was also the album that received a Pulitzer Prize. I am curious to know what you think about "Zero Tolerance For Silence" by Pat Metheny because there has always been a lot of controversy and speculation as to Pat's motivation and authenticity regarding its creation. Speaking of Metheny, there le his album with Ornette "Song X" and his album "The Sign of Four" with Derek Bailey. Thanks again to you.

Happy to see Dolphy and Miles, the first "free" musicians I got into back in high school.
For me, the greatest free jazz album is Coltrane's Olatunji Concert. Pure, horrifying beauty. Feels like it was predicting grindcore and harsh noise decades before they started.

Ese de Andrew Hill me suena a más a un Post-Bop ¿abstracto? Y sí, esa balada avant del final es hermosa, un final muy introspectivo. Tal vez, el trabajo más “libre” de Hill sea Compulsion.
