    Dude, that’s like my tempo pace. I’m dying when I hit mile six on that. With Kipchoge’s marathon I just don’t even have a concept of running the pace for more than like two laps, but this hits closer to home because it’s a pace that I actually use for training and I just don’t know how you can possibly do that for that long. I know most professional runners find that pace easy, and I just can’t wrap my head around that.

    That is about my best marathon time, and he did it twice and then some. In South Africa, we have Comrades Marathon, it does not have a standard distance and there is an up run and a down run with them alternating the start and finish every year, but it would be interesting to compare the pace of him and the two records.

      For a bit of comparison, the current Comrades Up record is 5:24:49. Bruce Fordyce's 1988 Up record was 5:27:42. In 1989, Fordyce set a world best (not at the time an officially ratified world record) for 100km of 6:25:07.
      So Fordyce was 3 mins off today's Comrade's Up record time and nearly a full 20 mins off Sorokin's current 100km record.

    Yiannis Kouros broke his own world records into his 40's without the use of super shoes. He was known for his ability to process 750 calories per hour which he practiced in training. Normal is about 300...he is still the GOAT of ultramarathoning in my book due to his longevity. • @rodjohnson2632
      @rodjohnson2632 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Using the formula (Time for distance 1)/(Time for distance 2) = [(distance 1)/(distance 2)]^1.06, you'd be able to do 2.3924 miles at 5:53 pace. This is a formula that has proved to be quite accurate for most runners, but especially accurate for highly trained runners, in predicting their potential time at one race distance, given their best time at another race distance. When I was in top shape and running about 32 minutes for a 10K, it predicted my best times at 5K, 10 miles, 1/2 marathon, and 15miles to within a couple of seconds of my actual PRs. Only my marathon PR was far off from the predicted time, but I know that was because I didn't train properly during the years I ran marathons. Later I focused on the shorter distances, and that's when I got all my PRs.

    • @Postermaestro
      @Postermaestro ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rodjohnson2632 cool. You know what the formula comes from? Some sort of averages?

    • @rodjohnson2632
      @rodjohnson2632 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Postermaestro I don't remember all the details but I first saw the formula in the early 80's in a runner's magazine article. I think it was developed in the 70's, based on the best performances of many elite distance runners at various distances. It's an empirical formula that best fits the data from all the runners. It attempts to model how a runner's pace must slow as the distance they run increases. The ratio of the 2 distances in the formula raised to the power 1.06 worked well for most of the elite runners studied, and later, as running became popular in the 80's there was much more data to test the formula on, and it was found that it worked fairly well for runners of all abilities, not just the elites. It does assume that a runner properly trains to be prepared to run fast at each distance the formula is applied to. For example, it won't work well trying to predict a miler's marathon time if he never puts in the training for the much longer distance. So again the formula is T1/T2 = (D1/D2) ^1.06. As an example, let's say D2 = 5K, and your time T2 for that 5K is 15 minutes. And you want to predict your 10K time T1. So you have D1/D2 = 10K/5K = 2. You raise that 2 to the power of 1.06 = 2.08493. Multiple your 5K time T2 by 2.08493 to get your 10K time T1 = 31.274 minutes = 31:16.

      Why wouldn't east africans dominate? If they trained for ultras, I'm sure you'll see the same results

      You don't get bored when you're focused like that. If you get bored while running you're just pissing in the wind. Might as well go for a walk and listen to some music.

      @@Postermaestro agree to disagree. been running for 32 years, especially trail running. much prefer to run for 90' on a course that I make up as I go. variety is the spice of life ;-)

    Ultrarunners aren't quite as receptive to mechanical doping as the marathon crowd. We understand what those shoes can offer over that kind of distance and that isn't something to take lightly.

    I don't know, but I thnik you're underestimating your viewers thinking most couldn't run a sub 6 minute mile :D
    I just ran a 4:29 1500m and I'm sure there's many people watching who are even faster, am I right?
