Well, yeah. Everyone thinks that America did good things for the Philippines, and they did. But they did a lot of horrible things too. And we're still feeling the effects of those actions today. I wonder how many Americans realize that the Benevolent Assimilation is a big, fat lie and that the Spanish and Americans didn't even bother to let a Filipino representative in during the negotiation for the Treaty of Paris (in which America basically bought the country).
Luckily the Philippines have forgiven us, and in-fact, they are the US biggest 'supporter' now meaning they consistently favor us about 90% while our other close allies give us anywhere between 50-60% including the UK, Israel, Etc.

Dude I've been using this channel since my freshman year of highschool, Currently a freshman in college and I'm still using it to help me fresh or get started on whatever history assignment I have. BTW if you really learn about US history which you of course go into greater depth in college. There is so much irony from what happened in the past and what current political issues there are today.

However, if we are to add photos of the Battle of Bud Bagsak, then maybe we should count up to 1913.

True, though being Norwegian I remember how school pretty much taught us how after the Viking age we were pretty much reduced to just a piece of land ravaged by plague, among other things. I remember our history books also teaching about injustices done to the Sami and Gypsy people in more recent centuries.

Hi, I'd just like to point out that a lot of historians in the Philippines strongly believed that the battle in Manila Bay was a fake battle between the Spanish and Americans. If I remember correctly, the Americans already had an agreement with Spain to hold said battle in order to give the Americans some authority in saying that they mostly won the war in the Philippines, when actually, the Philippine revolutionaries had already been defeating the Spanish in the Islands, except in Manila, which I believe was the last foothold of the Spanish in the Philippines.

Classic case of ends justify the means, I suppose. At the end of the day the Spanish American war made the US into a global power, greatly expanded US military and economic power, and brought an upsurge in national pride like nothing since the Civil War. But the fact of the matter is Spain never attacked the US, and in winning the war the US took over the role of colonial oppressor in the Philippines and Cuba.

Cuba was free from American rule and only had capitalistic demands placed on it and its resources; leaving it to otherwise govern itself which it did heartily. It was a method of securing what was too close to you to be anything other than an ally; see cuban missile crisis. And, in the Philippines, the atrocities were the one part of this i can't and no one should be proud of. Seeing imperialism in itself as a bad thing is kind of idioitic. It opened trade and allowed connections to be formed with most of the known world, even civilizations that otherwise had no knowledge of one another and gave technology and political ideology to people with no concept of it.
P.S. The poor, poor, oppressed people of Puerto Rico are living the highest standard of living in all Latin America, and I would guess you could throw Spain in there too.

Hi there! I'm a history PhD student working on my prelims at the moment and I wanted to say how much I LOVE this wonderfully informative and funny presentation. Thank you for a wonderful teaching example: in addition to being informative, you've also given us an understanding of some of the historiographical debates taking place in a way that is mercifully understandable. I see in the comments below that others have already offered some critiques, but I think this is wonderful. I may end up using some of these vids for classes in future, if that would be acceptable.
I was by no means reading White Guilt into this, but rather a sarcastic approach to the oft-insincere nature of politics and diplomacy.
My history teacher uses these videos in our class, that's actually how I found this channel in the first place.

Western imperialism was very different from other types of imperialism. The only exception being Japan, which decided to copy western imperialism.

Spain's view to avoid the ignominy of defeat is a foreshadowing of the Battle of Manila Bay. Philippine historians cite that the battle was just a "play" of sorts so Spain could save face after they "sold" their interests in the Philippines to the United States of America since they know for a fact they can't win. This is the prevailing view of many of my countrymen. Not being "that guy" but I'd like to point out it is Emilio Aguinaldo and not Emiliano. Thank you so much CrashCourse for the awesome video! I was looking for a supplement video/material regarding the Filipino-American War. If ever one of our local films titled "Heneral Luna" comes by your screens please please please watch it! Classic case of ends justify the means, I suppose. At the end of the day the Spanish American war made the US into a global power, greatly expanded US military and economic power, and brought an upsurge in national pride like nothing since the Civil War. But the fact of the matter is Spain never attacked the US, and in winning the war the US took over the role of colonial oppressor in the Philippines and Cuba.

Cuba was free from American rule and only had capitalistic demands placed on it and its resources; leaving it to otherwise govern itself which it did heartily. It was a method of securing what was too close to you to be anything other than an ally; see cuban missile crisis. And, in the Philippines, the atrocities were the one part of this i can't and no one should be proud of. Seeing imperialism in itself as a bad thing is kind of idioitic. It opened trade and allowed connections to be formed with most of the known world, even civilizations that otherwise had no knowledge of one another and gave technology and political ideology to people with no concept of it.

Obviously, we built the Panama Canal in Panama because that was the place best for building a canal between the Atlantic and the Pacific.
P.S. The poor, poor, oppressed people of Puerto Rico are living the highest standard of living in all Latin America, and I would guess you could throw Spain in there too.

I'm confused, You said that the battle of manila bay happened "well before the attack on Cuba" but the U.S. declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898 and the battle of manila bay happened on May 1, 1898 6 days after the war officially began.
