This performance is so amazing! They have better songs, but this is arguably their best jam session. All four regular members get a chance to shine, none more so than drummer Gavin Harrison, of course. It's almost impossible to watch a live PT performance and not be amazed by Gavin.
Great song. This was written by Steven Wilson as a response, or as he says, an antidote, to all pop love song drivel that was out their at the time he wrote this.
3:50 - Steven Wilson sad years ago in a concert that this song is the antidote for all those tacky, overly sweet lovesongs that british boy band were churning out back in the day. Actually you can see that vid on youtubes, just search "Porcupine Tree Boyband Rant". :)
Hi guys - another excellent reaction to the genius of SW and PT. For something at the complete other end of their musical spectrum, hows about reacting to "I Drive the Hearse" - live version from the their brand new release Closure/Continuation LIVE?
I don't think there was anything personal in this song to Steven. Around this time he took an interest in various dimensions of dark personality traits - such as psychopathy - and he wrote songs based on that. He has a brilliant ability in his songwriting to tell stories in music and to enter into the minds of the characters he creates for his songs/stories. This song, I believe, is based on a fictional character who experiences a break up and descends into a kind of twisted bitter resentment and mental disorder (represented well by the chaotic, distorted and disharmonious guitar playing and accompanying instrumentals).
Rolling stone voted Gavin harrison the third best drummer of the last 25 years. I recommend more Gavin Harrison with a band called the Pineapple Thief, white mist s a god song to try.
I would love if you just don't react to the songs everyelse does but are brave enough to make your own choses. There are so many other great songs of this band, I love Hatesong and Lightbulb Sun is actually my favorite album of Porcupine Tree but there are soooo many great songs out there, that are even better than Hatesong. Even on the same album. Knowing you from years of reactions Shesmovedon and Where we would be will blow you away.
To each his own. I won't make a comment about the musical ability of the band members, but I will say in my long life I have seen too much hatred to have to find it in musical form.
Steven refuted that he ever said that he hates Coldplay's music, and said that he does not hate it. That rumour got started because at a PT gig someone in the audience was holding a sign saying "I hate Coldplay" and the audience member either through the sign on the stage or Steven asked to see it. He held it up to show the audience and someone happened at that exact moment to photograph Steven holding the sign which was then circulated on the Internet.
Hey how about choosing a known band and not some obscure crap and when you pick something good you never play the right song. "I don't know i don't know" to quote you. I don't know about you either '
They have many videos of very well known bands, go check them out! I'm glad they chose this band and song because I've never heard of Porcupine Tree, and this is a very good song!
They are trying to experience new music, which is why most reactors are in a business. They have reacted to music that no one else on TH-cam has. I am not a fan of a lot of the music as it is apparent that they are not either, but they are polite about it. They can only pick songs that people refer to them, and it is easily apparent that they are not familiar with which bands were more popular. There are so many bands and so many generations of people that playing everyone's music is impossible. They are doing a great job and are one of the very few reactors on TH-cam who give genuine heartfelt reactions.
@@jamesferris4573I agree with allot of what you say, but I admit to feeling frustrated that, even though they professed to LOVE Zeppelin, they have stayed away from them for weeks. I have even sent a “ tha$k you” requesting a song ….more than a month ago and no response. So, yah, I respect their listening to obscure music (to me) but I wish they could at least stay “grounded” in better known bands as a “home-base”, if you will, from which to do their forays into more obscure music
@@tooli57 I hear you…. But just because you can’t build your own car or house doesn’t mean you can’t complain about them. But yeah, he was being overly snide and snarky. And there are indeed hundreds of other options.
The best current band on the planet IMO. Fantastic live.
Gavin Harrison on drums...he plays with Reinassence and King Crimson! ❤
I didn't know he plays with Renaissance, but he is the drummer for The Pineapple Thief.
With Reinassence in the 80s, his first band...the show I think live in Chicago is on youtube
Really like his drumming style......for some reason he reminds me of Phil Collins.
He also toured with Iggy Pop

The guitar and drum solos translate the feeling of hate in form of music. Masterpiece!
Masterpiece
You Sir have an excellent taste of music!
Nice reminder for me to go back and listen to some more Porcupine Tree. Great band.
Yeah!

Brilliant reaction guys, porcupine tree are one of the best bands out there.
"Hate Song" : Antidote "Love Song"

Ha! There you go - I never knew that before - thanks for background Eiri
Congratulations Andrei! You win the prize for "Angriest Person on TH-cam"! 🤣🥳🏆
Gavin proving that you don’t have to beat the shit out of the toms and pummel the double bass pedals to make an impact as a drummer.
This is Porcupine Tree's answer to all of the love songs on the radio. Don't get so triggered, by the word "Hate', guys. lol!

I'm a Christian. I don't hate any songs.🤣

Yea ... gavin is a god ... suggest to go to find some other stuff by him and pt

Steve Wilson's ex girlfriend was mexican...I think shes inspired this! 😅😅
He wrote the song about the band "Cold Play" -- he hates their music ;)

Late comment. I don't know what gig but I remember I've read that Steven said it's written for Britney Spears fans. Lmao enough.
I have to PT for many years. Very simple music with a bunch of fluff. Not like Tool.
