    Skall, without actually handling that knife, I am 95% sure that that blade is not pattern welded. I'd bet that the blade is stainless steel that has been etched with the pattern in to it. The 2 biggest clues are that the pattern doesn't go all the way to the edge of the knife, it can happen but you would have to pattern weld san mai a billet and that's too much work for a manufacturer. And #2 the lines are really too even on the knife it's like wood grain, it's very rare for a bunch of layers in pattern welded steel to run the entire length of the blade much less the entire width of the knife, it's just too even.

    • @breaden4381
      @breaden4381 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The spine shows three distinct layers. I'm not sure if it should do that.

    • @T.BG822
      @T.BG822 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It might be pattern welded, just poorly. I've seen quite a few 'damascus' blades come out of amateur/beginner shops that don't have the pattern go to the edge after polishing and a bad sharpening, and a weak etching of regular damascus can get that wood grain effect.

    • @urieelSEptim
      @urieelSEptim 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      usually with this type of knife, you get a normal steel core and pressed on „damascus“ sides, hence the three layers. pretty much the same as with san mai, but in cheap. But it doesnt seem to be etched on.

    • @xj9779
      @xj9779 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This could be possible a cutting layer with welded sides it is cheap for mass production and giving you a the best effect from the cutting layer the outer layers are just for the good look of it. The problem is that Damaskus is no trademark or something like that you can name everything else like that it doesn't matter.

    • @Jesses001
      @Jesses001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yup--I'll tell you what. All of these product reviews are truly awesome. I really had my eye on that Arms and Armor pole axe, and even (I think is was the) the bec de corbon, where you split the wood near the head of the weapon. I actually have a question about your experience with Arms and Armor. Did you contact them and notify them of the product defects regarding their pole arms? If so what was their response? They seem to have a fairly high reputation within the sword buying community. Upon numerous good reviews I've seen and read, I've ordered a three ring rapier from them and talked with their customer service rep because I wanted a few modifications. They were absolutely great and were able to accommodate me in every way possible. I'm really looking forward to seeing the final product. So if you did bring this to their attention, what was your experience with them? It would be good to know what their customer service is like when dealing with defective products. And actually, could you expand that a little more into which companies you've had good experiences with their customer service on the back end, where you are dealing with faulty products, and which companies you've had headaches with?
    Please, keep these reviews coming. It's been a great help to me when deciding what on Kult of Athena is worth buying. They're very helpful! Cheers!

    Look at the blade's spine. The central bit is VG10 steel, the outer parts are decorative variations of 1095 with exotics. This is fake, but it works so well, I bought two folding knives with blades like this. The hard but thin VG10 core is easy to sharpen and holds its edge extremely well. The decorative outer layer protects the brittle VG10. Dreamteam stuff.

    Most damascus, I find, is made from plates of 15N20 and 1075, high-carbon typically.
    I'm not much for the metal itself but I know the properties through and through, being a welder who works on (mostly) steel pipes. I'd say the best way to judge what steels are used in the specific case of damascus if it's not already disclosed, is a spark test on a sanding wheel or sanding belt.

For some reason my arm and hand hair is very soft and thin, almost like a dog's, so I need to either use my face or legs to do that test. I've seen my dad do it for the knives I sharpened for him and it shaved perfectly. He handed it to me to do the same and it barely cut off two hairs.

    That's a husa knife otherwise known as an achang dao. They, like most dao, range in size from utility knife to something with a blade of 25 inches (63.5cm). The knife is popular with a specific ethnic minority in China and bears resemblance to the dha/daab/dharb of Burma, Thailand and Laos. Whoever designed this one watched a lot of Cutlery Corner in the 90s and has a thing for knives made in Pakistan. Back then Pakistani steel with colorful laminated plywood and/or acrylic handles was the gold standard for flea market swords here in North America. I like that the company's website lets you choose between steel, stainless steel and 440 stainless steel. That inspires a lot of faith. 🤔
