@@nhldraftpros I should have specified that haha. But yes. I thought last year’s was a bit less top-heavy but a bit deeper (w/ Hutson, Chernyshov, Artamonov, etc falling to second round)
@ Agreed! Yes, there's a definite drop off of talent in this draft (1st round talent-wise). Most later round picks will be role players in the future (middle 6) type. But there are always some hidden gems that pop up!
From San Jose's POV as at this time pretty damn good odds they'll end up with a top 4 pick in this 2025 draft I'd rank the top 4 as. 1. Schaefer - obviously based on talent and especially need as their talent on defense right now is mediocre. Dickinson & Schaefer would greatly improve their blue line in the near future. 2. Misa - it's between him and Hagens personally but I choose Misa between the two because he's a lot more dynamic as a goal scorer & his size and defense are also a big reasons why I think he'll be the better of the two. 3. Hagens - might have one of if not the highest floors of this draft in terms of the top 4 or 5 prospects. Also is the best playmaker too probably. Would likely be the 2nd line center for the next decade behind Celebrini. This also probably means Smith moves to the wing if they draft either center of the top 2 center prospects with their first pick wherever it is. 4. Martone - Sharks really don't have a player with his kind of skill set as that big power forward who can play around and score near the net. But I'd rank defense and center especially with this roster and their current prospect pool as bigger needs during the still early stages of this rebuild.
As a sharks fan, I'm with you. But I would be equally happy with either Martone or Hagens... I dunno. Even if Martone's D isn't that great, it would be fun having him up with Celebrini
would be cool to get your guys' top 3 picks for each team currently expected to draft in the top 5. Could be interesting considering teams like san jose who might not need any forwards but might also miss out on schaefer.
Picking for need is ridiculous at that point in the draft. Stabbing Bedard in the back picking for need. Michael Misa would be my first pick. He reminds me of Tyler Seguin in his draft. Frondell and Martone haven’t fallen off a cliff or anything but don’t disregard Bear’s escalation. I would put him over those counterparts and could be the Sennecke of the draft. My question would be where are you on Carter Bear and what would make you hold off on him inside the top ten?
Martone reminds me so much of Brendan Shanahan. I think it's possible that Hagens and Misa become more of the driving force on their line at the NHL level, but Martone seems like that player good teams are always looking to add to push them over the top to win a cup. As a Hawks fan, I'm taking him at this point.
@nhldraftpros Sounds good. Since you two get to see many more games of these players than the rest of us, it'd also be nice to hear if you guys notice any standout "intangibles" amongst any in this draft class? Things such as standout leadership, special teams specializations, relentless backchecker, etc. After a few decades of watching prospects develop, it seems to me like those kinds of intangibles often determine how a career at the NHL level goes moreso than scoring numbers in juniors.
@ Yes indeed! Actually I'll be going to see Martone play on Sunday live, so I'll let you know what I think. I've seen him a few times so far and he's been inconsistent at times in his play...some games great and others just good.
Great job as always. So hope that SJ gets some consolation for another year of 💩. What is Schafer’s route to the NHL? Does his injury slow his development, and if he’s not playing in the NHL next year does he have to go back to the OHL? I’m assuming he’s probably not going to have as immediate an impact as Mac (he’s already the best player on the Sharks at 18 years old!) but his path should be pretty quick, like the 26-27 season in the NHL if all goes according to plan.
If the sharks don't land the #1 pick, who is the best choice for them between Misa, Hagens, and Martone? For me, Hagens seems too similar to Will Smith.

Do you guys agree with the growing consensus that, after ~20 players, it’s hard to find first-round talents?
@ In this draft specifically?

This is something that could be added to an episode! Thanks!

I'm still a Hagens fan for the No1 pick but have to admit If I'm a team looking for a D, then Schaefer goes no1 if we have the 1st pick.

If Schafer is Maker like and controls the game then you have to take him. Maybe trade Kourchinski.
Hawks pissed me off not taking Cristal,Demidov and Eiserman. Eyetest and points don't lie.

Which team do you think Misa would fit with the best?
Hard to say, but I think a team like Chicago could probably use someone like him with all his talent. Top 6 player for sure!
Do you think any if these top 4 players make the jump to the NHL next season?
If not, who else is NHL ready?
Thanks for sharing, let's add this to next episode and discuss!
@nhldraftpros sweet.
