@18:00 It's worse than that. 8/10 engineers believed the cube didn't feel *much* pain. This infers that they know the companion cube feels pain, and that it's simply the degree that's being disputed.
I saw a video or something once that the testing was not about testing the gun but rather testing human psychology and this chamber is definitely evidence for that
The very first time I played this as a kid I threw the companion cube into the fire without thinking, all because I didn't understood too much English and therefore the context.
Imagine being Chell, being the most loneliest person with no one talk to except for a merciless AI that controls the whole facility and talks down on you all day, I would be happy to have a companion cube.. But I would never throw him even if it's means I won't be able to solve the test, but I will eventually and unfortunately give up and throw him after staying there for too long and I will feel sad about it and say sorry

I'm gonna have to take a look at which community post. I've decided to add more stuff like this even if they don't perform as well. Comes more from a love of the series and how these situations are built
An observation I've noticed is that GLaDOS has a different way of psychologically manipulating specific individuals. The specific language she uses to try to make Doug Rattman crack in the Lab Ratt comic for instance is entirely different from the language she uses against Chell. She homes in on his schizophrenia while in the case of Chell she seems to target her personal insecurities based on her file. Because of this, it's hard to tell if Chamber 17 was even meant for Chell at all. It's possible that GLaDOS was homing in on Chell's insecurities around loneliness and sense of morality as a way a psychologically breaking her, however the test also seems almost made specifically for Doug. He's known to have been present at some point in the previous chamber due to his den and GLaDOS is aware of him treating his companion cube as an actual companion that can speak. It could be that Chell was expected to die, and then Doug after failing to save her would scramble on to the next text chamber to avoid getting shot, complete with getting a new companion cube to replace his previous one if he left it behind. GLaDOS's language in Chamber 17 seems to be directed more at Doug's psychological weaknesses than Chell's. She specifically goes on and on about how companion cubes don't speak and that you shouldn't believe in such superstition, as if specifically meant to provoke Doug like she does in the comic. Alternatively, it could be that GLaDOS was aware that Doug was watching and set the test up to break both of them simultaneously. Going after Chell due to her loneliness and morality, and Doug due to his schizophrenia. If so, there's something especially evil about the idea of the only other living person in the facility also being psychologically targeted in the same test meant to batter down Chell emotionally for being alone. GLaDOS has a tendency of targeting Chell not only for things such as being alone, but as previously mentioned for her morality. Multiple times in the game she tries to convince Chell that she is a bad person. This is one of those times. It seems to be something that GLaDOS read about on Chell's file, and it's unclear whether the low frequency of this one being used against Chell indicates it being a lesser insecurity only to be used against her when scraping the bottom of the barrel or a greater insecurity to be used as a trump card against her. Either way, it ultimately ends up either not working or maybe even outright backfiring as Chell is either unaffected by such taunts or perhaps even gets motivated by them. It's possible that when forced to sacrifice the companion cube and then taunted as a horrible person for it, Chell could have sworn an internal oath of revenge on the spot.
Thanks man. It's more work, but having more time to put these together means they can be of a much higher quality! I was also chuffed. Still, I hope the cube forgave us.
Me in the half life series I was working at black mesa as a scientist in sector c. I escaped and survived the resonance cascade and joined forces with Eli and the rebels. While alyx vance was 15 and 2 years after the events of portal, I went with my partner to stop the combine commandos. As he tried to kill the squad leader I used my pistol and shot him on the hand. It would've been creepy if the companion cube could faintly whisper when you're near it, i I wonder why valve didn't add something like that just make chamber 17 haunted or add unusual scenarios, like the cube disappearing to a different spot.

Nowadays when i play portal on my computer i just use a key bind to spawn a normal cube and chuck that in to avoid harming Bloxy (what i named the cube)
No guilt here, Glados was a known manipulator, insulter , and just an overall bad "person". I saw the cube as nothing more than any other cube with a heart placed on the side, because I think deep down Glados actually thought that made it real in some way akin to a teddy bear for a kid or something. No, at the end of the day what Glados doesn't know about the human condition is shown with the companion cube nonsense.
That's a neat viewpoint honestly, I guess caring about the cube kinda comes down to wether you easily get attached to inanimate/fictional things, cuz for me it took a few minutes to decide to throw the cube in the incerator, but I also deeply cared about my Pokemon and my Dog in Minecraft despite them literally being a group of pixels on a screen, so maybe that's why i was able to care about a cube that does nothing but exist and help you get past a few certain puzzles, but idk the fact that it also was needed to complete the puzzles before you're forced to "kill" it also helped make it harder to cast aside since it sort of felt like your only "friend"/helper in the game, which was only boosted by the fact your completely alone throughout portal aside from Glados' disembodied voice and Ratman's insane scribbles. Anyways it's neat to know that some people actually had zero hesitation in "killing" the Companion Cube, it makes sense since it's y'know just an object in a vide game, but considering how far the game goes to make you care about the cube, with Glados even having dialogue that implies it could be somewhat "alive", or atleast sentient like many other Aperture Robots are shown to be (for whatever hellish reason 😂), it's just interesting that despite all that some players still saw the cube for what is really is, a cube with cute heart textures on it, and threw it right away so they could continue the game. Lol, anyways just wanted to point out why I think some/"most" people had trouble getting rid of that Companion Cube and how interesting it is to me that some people didn't hesitate whatsoever when Glados told 'em to throw the cube into that Hell-Hole 😂😂😂
Yes. I hesitated. I looked around for a way out of doing it. But there was no other way forward , so I incinerated the poor soul. And thank you for this interesting video.
Lorewise, it always seemed to me that Glados was actually talking to Ratman, indirectly making fun of him for hallucinating, speaking with a cube and putting himself at risk for it. I think that way because Glados would do anything for more humans to test. I don't see her "wasting" subjects by stuffing them on cubes.
Interesting view. I think maybe the bodies were just put in there then. Or, in a more sinister case, maybe their consciousness was uploaded to the cube in a similar way Caroline was to GLaDOS.
Wow. The upload idea is pretty cool (and horrifying). But idk, the things she says are basically how Ratman sees the cubes, you know? Nevertheless, I do believe, at least mechanically, the devs intentions are as you say: psychological torture of Chel n such. Maybe Glados got the idea from Ratman and is trying it on Chel lol

Honestly, on the first playthrough one isn't sure at the time of chamber 17 if the voice you're hearing is a series of recordings or something more. We know it's an AI now but it's easy to forget that there was a time for us all that we weren't entirely sure.

I also feel like you should maybe keep the background music in stuff like this 7:21 It doesnt feel right. I REALLY like the new view of the camera though. And please dont take this as hate
I tried something a little different this week with the thumbnail and hired someone. I honestly really liked it! I will learn to tone down the bobbing, and even using in game scenes and audio is new so I'll take those on board. Thanks for the comment :)
I like this video because it doesn't feel like something you pumped out just cuz it was the sort of thing the audience expected you to cover on your channel. No, you clearly just made it cuz you sincerely wanted to and it was loosely connected to the Half-Life universe so technically it counts.
You're right. Sometimes I do have to play the TH-cam game and post a video about a topic I know will perform well, which I do enjoy mostly, but I also like to throw ones like this in too. bruh I tossed that thing straight in the incinerator 😂😭
Honestly, on the first playthrough one isn't sure at the time of chamber 17 if the voice you're hearing is a series of recordings or something more. We know it's an AI now but it's easy to forget that there was a time for us all that we weren't entirely sure.
That absolutely added to the confusion of the chamber.
Chell's eyes give me nightmares.
C'mon skyrionn. Do a video about unit #3650. You know you want to! Give in to temptation! 😉
Im going to be honest, the thumbnail wasnt like any of your other ones and im not really a fan, the view bobbing I felt like it only should appear in more hazardous/unsafe settings.
Thanks for the comment :)
np :D
No real news or rumor about portal 3 already? Ah...great video 🙏
Loved it!
Thanks bud!
new portal lore video hell yeah
I didn't realise how long it had been!
0:16 whats happening to the portal gun?
It's just spinning
@@Skyrionn it's not on its pedestal properly
I like this video because it doesn't feel like something you pumped out just cuz it was the sort of thing the audience expected you to cover on your channel. No, you clearly just made it cuz you sincerely wanted to and it was loosely connected to the Half-Life universe so technically it counts.
You're right. Sometimes I do have to play the TH-cam game and post a video about a topic I know will perform well, which I do enjoy mostly, but I also like to throw ones like this in too. Stuff like the Hollow Knight Timeline, and Talos Principle timeline were passion projects that did well eventually. I'm sure this one will too.
I was just replying through Portal and thought it would make an interesting video. There'll be more stuff like this.
love your videos !
Glad you like them!
@@Skyrionn didnt think youd reply :DD
Skyrionn is the LoreMaster of everything Valve related 🗣️🔥🔥
I try!
I still have nightmares about Chell's face but none about the companion cube 😉😂
I laughed while incinerating my companion cube
i saved my companion cube by throwing a turret in the fire instead of cube
How did you get a turret in there?
@@Skyrionn i put the companion cube on the door while getting a turret put the turret inside and get companion cube and then put turret in android hell
Me in the half life series
Started working as a scientist at black mesa. Join the resistance. Defect from the resistance and join the combine to serve their benefactors. Later died as a sacrifice to help Gordon Freeman and Eli vance by killing a combine advisor. Telling my last words use this device to find alyx and the borealis to Gordon and Eli. After destroying combine and by the events of portal 2. Chell listens to a recording by me saying to Eli and his team that i was sorry for everything.
bro joins resistance, deflects from it, joins combine, deflects combine this time and rejoins resistance 💀
@@chibisayori20 Bro is out of sidequests now
Do you by any chance plan on making a video on the metroid universe? Cause I would like to see that.
11:35 whats the rambling in the background
How long did it take for you to set up those Gmod shots? Like the ones where Chell is sitting on the Companion cube. Because I have used ragdolls to do scenes and It takes a while.
There's an emote tool on the workshop. Turned hours into minutes.
@@Skyrionn oh ok
860 views very sad (this video is absolutely perfect)
Sometimes the algo hits, sometimes it doesn't sadly! I still loved putting this together
@@Skyrionn i hope the next video get more views so you can keep uploading
I guess im just too 4ut1st1c to see the cubes as something else than objects. Alternatively, i could possibly go as far as the theory claiming that "THE PINK BOX IS PEOPLE".
...that came out far more seccual than intended.... lmao
I like how no one mentions that Chell is...kinda petty. I am 90% she would just yeet the companion cube into the sun just to spite people.
Sources: Portal 2 comic: Chell has a lot of tenacity. Portal 1 & 2: She's mute for the entire game.
Oh 100% petty towards GLaDOS. I'd be the same. But still, the cube was an innocent victim in their game of cat and mouse.
I just dropped it. It's a cube.
is it bad that I wasn't effected by this test and incinerated the cube with no hesitation?
Maybe if it was an actual NPC, I would have cared...
It seems that there are a few comments like yours in this section. We all see the world differently. It's all about psychology
5:34 that's a lie just search for a video about Portal Osha violations and you'll see
It was a joke

Interesting timeline
so what's the state of humanity at the end of portal 2's timeline (2081 in your case)?
Skyrionn you can makr a video about the lore of
Soulstice
Pretty interesting and very liked game
That cube went straight down the incinerator, so I could move on… Never got the idea as to why it would be special, and I’ve always felt that people went nuts for it because they were told to…
Monster. jk
MONSTER
The companion cube is actually Monika from DDLC, you just killed her >:(
Damn it, this is the subnautica cuddlefish all over again. Can't deal with all this emotional manipulation.
damn - I have to look into that. It sounds good.
how is the companion cube so big in this video?? im so confused
That's the regular size. Maybe the lense I used on the camera maybe made it look bigger?
nice one
Thanks!
I can't be the only one who didn't care about the cube. It was simply a means to an end. I put it in the furnace and I moved on without a second thought. Did people really care about the companion cube?
From the poll, around 2/3 of people did. We're all built different though and view and interact with the world in different ways.
@@Skyrionn Really? Over an inanimate object? That's crazy. Thanks mate. :D
Same man, f- that silly cube
I somehow feel that there is another creator with a video discussing just how bad these signs are... among the many many other OSHA failures on display. >.>
That inspired the joke tbh
the face
worst fates aperature please
Great idea
This feels like an april fools video
Nope - full on serious video about a topic I found interesting
technically fire is a part of half life and portal so you could do a lore vid for fire
even I couldn't stretch that into a video
what about portals air? It is re-used
Intresting I never felt that but I have one of the oddest portal first plays I played it day one and my copy was glitched so for the entire game I have no Glados vocals it was only on my second play through that I heard hear only after going what the frack are people talking about
Oh man - you're playthrough must have felt so different to a standard one
@@Skyrionn massively was confused by the companion cube being different but the fact I was able to complete it was a testament to valves level design. The only real spot that got me stumped for a bit was the last test chamber and incinerator ended up working my way backward down the track to the main chamber realizing there was no where else to go took multiple respawns to find the way past the incinerator then puzzle the way through to the battle with some odd computer thing that I had to fight for no reason that I could tell. I still loved portal due to the puzzle solving but even to this day I would say the main story just dosent hit me the same. I had been super stoked for portal even more than ep2 pre orange box launch and wasn’t disappointed just had one really odd experience the first time
I don't wanna kill him :(
Same
Since I have no other options in the situation, I don't feel guilt or regret.
(And besides, it's just a game anyway. 😂)
not even a little?

No shot I'm first
you were too slow
Congrats Bro.
Almost first
No, GLaDOS tried to manipulate you throughout the whole game so why would i entertain the notion it was alive?
Because you're not aware she is sentient until the final chamber.
I saved my wife's phone number under Companion Cube.
Running out of lore are we?
Nope. There's still so much more to cover - I just thought this one would be interesting to explore!
I never destroyed the cube I just glitched threw the wall and never played again.
Best way to play
