    Thanks for featuring Changi Airport, the pride of our country. Our first Prime Minister did not want it to be just a utilitarian infrastructure; he wanted it to be a gateway to showcase our country. The original Terminal One was impressive then. It had a 4-storey high waterfall greeting visitors, the architecture finishes were also grand, and visitors travelling along the main highway into the city will pass through a 16km tree-lined boulevard, finally breaking through the canopy onto a bridge offering panoramic views of the city centre. Such is the vision of our first Prime Minister and the team of bureaucrats, architects and engineers.
    Over the years, the airport has also stayed ahead of the game by always adopting the latest technologies. We are now one of the few airports in the world where one can exit the aircraft and exit the airport in less than 15min. Clearing immigration is already super fast; it takes less than 1 minute.

    Singapore's airport is a testament to what visionary leadership and engineering prowess can achieve. It's not just an airport; it's an experience that showcases the country's commitment to excellence and innovation. The Jewel is indeed breathtaking, but it's the seamless integration of functionality with aesthetic appeal that truly sets Changi apart. Proud to see such advancements in our global infrastructure!

  • @Skandoro
    @Skandoro หลายเดือนก่อน +444

    Whilst The Jewel is located at Changi Airport, it is positioned entirely outside of the airport terminals. You cannot access The Jewel on foot unless you transit through immigration and enter Singapore OR use the T2-T4 terminal train which passes the waterfall inside The Jewel.
    Access to The Jewel is also FREE, but there is a ticket required to visit the sky garden and attractions on the top floor.
    I know this as I visited The Jewel on Saturday whilst travelling through Changi!

      Your information is partially correct. Jewel is designed so that as you exit T1 baggage collection you walk straight into Jewel level 1. Note you “left” immigration and technically not at airside of the airport. From other terminals simply take inter terminal trains and follow the signs to Jewel. Again you would have left immigration. Jewel is not designed to be an “in airport” place which is exactly what this video and the architect describes. For departing passengers, you can check in early at the Jewel, walk around, eat and sleep in a hotel if you like, before going to your immigration and departure gate as per normal. Try to arrive at least 4 hours ahead. There are lots to do and see.

    AWESOME! Simply awesome!
    After seeing this, I wonder if anyone has considered building a new structure with a lot of these amazing features, but also adding some Ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian elements.
    Sometimes, what may seem to be a clash of architectural elements can actually be a genius confluence of different styles that when placed together create a greater whole.

    Informative video, but I just thought I should point out that Safdie didn''t have a radical thought. Changi Airport was a already a destination in itself for locals before the Jewel was built.

    technically, the waterfall is just part of shopping mall NEXT to the airport. you'll need to exit the customs to enter, and most people who go there aren't actually flying

    The Jewel is really beautiful to visit, but you have to go through immigration to spend time there.
    Surrounding the Jewel is a shopping mall with a different temperature zone than the junge climate zone in the center at the waterfall. But these two zones aren't physically separated. The warm air from the center keeps flowing into the mall. It seems like they're cooling like hell in the mall too keep it cool. It is a energetically nightmare 😂
    10:28 AC vents below the benches? I'm wondering because it feels like the is no AC at the waterfall because it is as tropical warm inside as it is outside 🤔

    I love how these types of videos always praise the engineering marvels without mentioning any of the engineers on the project. Architects don't make these things work.

    Designing the facade was also a marvel in itself. With the help of a clever modelling methodology, Arup helped realised the geometry required for the 9000 slabs of glass, no two of them alike due to differences in sizes, curvature and modulations.

    I would say that T5 is actually almost completed: land reclamation works were completed years ago, new MRT (Subway lines) are being built, water, power infrastructures are well under way. Building the actually airport facilities on top of all that will be relatively quick, unless another incredible piece of architecture is decided to be added. But that also shouldn’t take too much time. It cannot be tall (airport height restrictions) and there is nothing to displace to make room. So “easy”. I pass by the construction site(s) regularly and this is massive project.
