He's great, but the interviewer was rude. It was like she was trying to make Chabon feel uncomfortable.

This is why Pynchon doesn't do interviews or public appearances of any sort.

Brian Wright Id love to see Pynchons first interview be on a late night talk show, where no one in the audience knows him and he gets to joke around with the host (preferably Conan) and it isn’t taken seriously. Maybe show up with a paper bag over his head.

I think at least part of the reason "John Carter" failed is because of its title. They should have added a subtitle to it for those who were not familiar with the books. Calling it "John Carter: And the Princess of Mars" or something more thought provoking would have been more effective in drawing a wider audience, I think.

According to this horrible interviewer we can only write about ourselves, since it's hard to "imagine yourself being someone else"...

True. If person can't get into somebody elses' head, how can they write at all? to my knowledge, Bram Stoker wasn't a vampire.

Okay yeah she's a rude person. But the thumbnail? They really must hate this guy.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking that the interviewer was sort of rude. It felt as if he's explaining to a child how perspective works, and how people can put them in other's shoes.

Why write from the perspective of a 'black man'? Because the beauty of writing is that you can create whatever you want - unrestrained.
Chabon's writing is masterful. 'Wonder Boys' will forever be one of my favorite novels of all time.

Anyone else think he sounds kind of like Torgo from Manos: Hands of Fate?

    I like Michael Chabon.
"John Carter" has everything I like but it failed at the box office. It is a pity!

But just because it failed at the box office doesn't mean it failed as a movie.
Like, it's a very very entertaining movie. Sometimes a little over-loaded and sluggish, but overall a lot of fun.
