Yes I agree. Buttons are easier, convenient and less dangerous. I prefer the older model Golf and Audi A3 because they have buttons and knobs for heating, air con and stereo controls.
The only thing it's got going for it that would make it's removal excusable is the voice control, I'm far too used to just reaching down the dual climate control from muscle memory in my Mk3 Leon.

Definitely agree on the lack of shortcuts. Having all the major controls being touch is not a good idea. At least they backed off the previous idea where even the steering wheel and light controls were touch.
currently have a BMW 118 D (the last version with RWD) as a company car but considering switching to the Golf 8 Station Wagon when I have to order my new car March 2021.... The BMW is a nice car but costs way more with less extras equipped (I got easily to 42 K without leather seats, without better sound system, without roof window +++) I might change a few bucks (there will be tax deducted from your gross income for a certain value percentage of a company car in Germany) with the golf while having an overall better car (ok, less sporty but in my mid 40s I tend to go slower on the autobahn these days).... Great video, interior looks fantastic.
I would love a Mk8 R, but I’m really not a fan of all the touch surfaces that are being put into these cars.. I drive an e-Golf for work, and that has touch sensitive volume buttons, instead of a regular knob, and it just feels so impractical to use, especially while driving. In normal cars you can just reach for the buttons and you feel them and hold on to them, and it’s so much easier.
regarding the illumination on the volume and AC, the only explanation I can come up with is that you rarely need AC at night time and you can adjust the volume from the steering wheel

Looks good at night, but doesn't change the fact concerning the cost cutting. The glove box is not felt lined. Wait until everything in it starts vibrating. These were the things that VW was built on. Quality.

If you want a fast car Golf is smaller and lighter. In that case I would get R Line package. Golf has ambient lights on the rear doors as well. If you plan on keeping the car, it doesn’t heart to have more space in case you start a family Octavia is No1.

Couple of irritating things for me. The temp sliders on the dash are not backlit so you can’t see them at night. And keyless entry on mine doesn’t work!! Back at vw after 5 days!! Brand new gtd, hope it’s not a Monday car!
andrew shelton have in mind that eTSI will give you good economy only with light foot on gas pedal and in ECO mode. But it takes out the fun. It’s more smooth and less noisy compared to diesel. But if you do short commute it wont save you much petrol. While diesel will give you better economy just driving in normal regime. It really depends on your driving style and commute distance, will you have benefits or not. The eTSI comes to similar price as TDI unlike regular TSI. It also depends what is the cheaper fuel in your country. In Croatia it’s diesel. So my choice from economic perspective is still diesel. Golf is refined car and diesel wasn’t so noisy and cabin proof is pretty decent on high speed.

Looks very cheap at night, LED ambient lights are cool as long as it's used moderated and in only certain places. All this blue everywhere makes it looks like it's been done by a kid from aftermarket parts. People are so obsessed with glossy plastics and ambient light LED's everywhere that they forget about the most imporant part, BUILD quality !
Check if you lights are on AUTO. You might be driving with day time running lights at night which is dangerous! As your headlights are on day time, meaning at night your headlights are off and only position lights are ON on front. You’re back taillights are OFF.

I didn’t test Toyota cars, but in general more power is better 150 should be enough for easy overtake. Think I prefer Seat more than Golf. But then Toyota might seem more interesting since it doesn’t have all the functions like AC on screen that is buggy.
It's very modern and has cool tech to it, but they just cut too many corners quality-wise, tons of small quality of life features gone like that roller for example, plastic is pathetic for the price AND 1.5tsi for example still has that infamous "kangaroo" issue...

I predict -in about a year- VW will offer new version going back to some basic knobs. Over complicated ergonomics bring negative results.
The base level infotainment system of the golf 8 also has two knobs attached to it. It's still possible to adjust the volume with a manual button.
They've simply dumped them all on the steering wheel

Mazda 3 interior has nicer materials but Golf is a nicer design imo. You'd not be disappointed with either car.

@@x1910Polaroid I don't have a Golf and I agree that the MK7 is way better in quality. There is a video in youtube exposing the compromises that this new Golf has in comparison with the old. It is disappointing.

I know it doesn't sound like a fair comparison (MK7 R vs standard MK8), but the things mentioned are available across all trims on the MK7 and there isn't a difference as you go high up in the MK8 range (as we already saw in the new GTI). But really, at least for me, you don't need any video exposing this. When Golf 8 was announced I instantly noticed the cost cutting from VW (and even Audi with the new A3). Strangely enough, I feel the new Octavia is the one that feels the most premium.

@@JRCarReviews Normally a functional high pressure egr system on a diesel car driven outside the city does not deposit as consistently but it still deposits because it pulls unfiltered gases from the exhaust manifold and puts them into the intake
A low-pressure egr system is much cleaner because it takes the gases after the catalyst and the particle filter and reintroduces them at the entrance to the cold part of the turbo, but the trouble there is that those gases have an acidity that turns into a condensate that attacks the intercooler in time as well as the egr cooler.
The egr system is necessary to be able to keep down the level of nitrogen oxide emissions, the big problem with diesel.
It's a pity when you turn of the screen, the radio also turn off.
