Modifying a Quansheng UV-5R transceiver for HF Receive

Before I start this modification I always check the transceiver transmits on 2m and 70cm correctly and that it goes into broadcast FM correctly (the broadcast FM chip is replaced in this modification so if it doesn't work then its not worth proceeding until this fault is rectified!)
I also upload the transceiver with new firmware CEC_0.51HF so it recognises the HF PCB when fitted
Its quite hard to get in close without a macro lens but this should give you an idea of the approach and snags. There are other videos showing the modification in more detail so if you're going to do the mod have a look at OM0ET as well

Sorry about the shaky hands, it comes and goes and I guess its getting worse with age :(
To perform the mod the parts needed are -
The MK2 HF PCB with SI4732 chip
Some fine jumper wire
1mH inductor
100nf 0402 capacitor
If you don't have a good heat gun (@1kw) I would suggest cutting the leads on the IC and removing the waste with a soldering iron and some solder wick? Be very careful not to damage the two 1k resistors adjacent to pins 5 and 8 these carry the data and it won't work if these are damaged or go high resistance
I wouldn't attempt this modification without a modern soldering iron with C245 and C210 cartridges. If you have one fine, if not I would suggest purchasing one (even if you don't want to do this modification). You will find all your soldering work on modern PCBs far easier! I use a 10x magnification illuminated lamp for this which makes detailed work like this and inspection a lot easier.
