I just had two of these installed using the hardwired kit on the eaves of my house. I am not disappointed although a bit underwhelmed with the picture quality. To me, what was equally important is that the software/app ecosystem works and this integrates well with it (as I already have the alarm, doorbell and floodlight and am already paying the monthly subscription).

    • @LifeHackster

Not with Ring though because they can do better on their compression even if it is still in 1080P. Just look at the difference between the Nest which still records in 1080P.

I just bought the Spotlight cam Plus. I hate the 1080 res but I already have the Ring Doorbell and didn't want multiple apps and subscription services. I'm starting to think I should have cut my losses and went with another system for security cams and kept the doorbell as a standalone. I wish I saw your videos beforehand.

You have to pay a monthly service fee for the camera to work as intended. You must pay to receive phone notifications when motion is detected.

    • @psphacker57
      @psphacker57 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You don’t need subscription to get a notification for motion detection and to view your live feed. Downside is you have to view the motion detection to know what happened as it won’t record and store on the cloud

I have the Ring suite in my house, which includes a doorbell wired, solar spotlight camera, and 14 piece security system. I love the security system. It works very well. Doorbell works ok. However, I hate the camera. It doesn’t have 5ghz capability, has 1080p, has horrible audio quality, and it is a pain in the *ss to get it to reconnect to the Wi-Fi when it disconnects every month. The camera quality on the doorbell and spotlight camera is so bad. I would never consider any of the new Ring camera until they debut a 4k model.

Question - how long will your videos record for? When I go to Video settings, sometimes the "auto" setting goes up to 120 seconds, but most of the time it is set to up to 30 seconds. I called Ring support, they determined that the Spotlight Cam Plus (Plug-In) has a limit of 30 seconds in Auto mode, and 60 seconds with Auto disabled. I have found it will record longer.. sometimes. Also sometimes the Auto setting reads 120 seconds. I don't get it - and can't find official specs on this anywhere. What is your experience with recording length? Great video!

Hi lifehacker, I'm looking to add a set of 2 of these to my existing doorbell and I would like to wire hard wire them to the mains supply via an existing junction box that accepts a cable input (flying lead) which is common here in the UK. It seems that the plug in version would be suitable by removing the plug. However, you seem to suggest that there is a transformer in the power line that fits inside the battery space and that the input to the camera is vis a usbc. Have i got that right?

I need a new extra cam and was strongly thinking on switching my ring system... I ended up buying another brand.. but will give them some time before switching.. If another brand comes up with a similar neighborhood app (like eufy) it will be a no brainer.. overall staying because of the community... Not because of the specs.... Sad but true..

My neighbors have Ring cams on their house up in their roof soffits and they come out with their guard dog every time I come outside. They let her (encourage her) to bark and growl at me on my own property. So the question I have is: "how far can one reasonably be sure that the Ring camera will NOT detect movement and send a notification. the lady said 'she is watching me," and this is obvious. I am trying to figure out how to shield my property line from their cameras. Their house is 90 feet from the property line. If I am outside and within about 80 feet of the property line on y side they come outside, day or night and harass me. So that would be a 150 foot plus detection range . Either that or they have some sort of sensor near the property line. I doubt they have Wifi that functions 90 feet away from their house. Please advise on the max possible detection range for Ring products.

There is nothing to disagree about...if you have the PRO version of their spotlight cam, turn ON their 3D motion detection and see how far it can detect - watch my video on it.. aside from that it works well, I have my original spotlight cam plug in 5 1/2 years old already and still works...BUT, they are still in 1080P, you could hardly see any faces beyond 25 feet and worse at night.

Really having problems here with my new Spotlight Cam Plus ...
Occasionally light remains on and have to manually toggle it off from the app. And worse it now randomly stops detecting motion, camera won't record videos, or record and update snapshots.
A reboot restores it to normal operation but only temporarily. ....
Wonder if the Pro will be better, even though I don't need the 3D detection feature. ...

Does anybody know how to rig your outdoor floodlight camera, ring, to notify you of motion outdoors? Such as have it hooked to a lightbulb say in your bedroom at night so when there’s motion of a person outside and your camera picks it up, it will light your lightbulb in your bedroom at night too and you’ll wake up and know somethings going on on your camera. Not a lot of people. No, a lot of people will not like this idea because they’re worried that you and their lightbulb will be going off and on all the time but for me, I’m retired so I don’t care! I want to be notified to wake up and be able to check my cameras, if there’s a person around my home, not my app because that’s not going to wake me up!! I don’t want to be one of these people who get up the next day and look at their camera and find out stuff was stolen off their back deck garage. Their garage of the car was broken in a little too late!!
It doesn’t even have to be a lightbulb. It can be a bell or anything.
    Thank you

Yes, you can using Amazon Alexa.. link your Ring account to it and also whatever smart light or bulb you have and then make a routine so that when your ring camera detects a person it will trigger the light.

The blue light undermines security. People outside your home can see every time you use live view, and or every time your camera records something. Sometimes, (and it seems like it only happens at the most important times) the camera will detect movement, you’ll get the notification, but when you try to view it the app takes to long to load, and allow one to view the potential threat in a timely manner. It isn’t the internet connection, because they’re on a 1G connection. To say this product isn’t worth the price is an understatement! Did a toddler develop these things or something? I wouldn’t even be happy paying 1/5 there price. I bought 5 spotlight cam plus. 2 months later I took down, destroyed, and discarded 5 spotlight cams. I bought a generic wired system with 2TB storage, and 10 cameras for less than half the price of the 5 ring cams. They have color night vision, motion detection, face recognition, vehicle identification, two way communication, I can access them online for free from anywhere, and everything. They’re probably too busy spying on the owners of the products, and it’s conflicting with their ability to perform their duties efficiently, and effectively.

Just stick a piece of black PVC tape over the blue light - sorted.
As for the spying, the tin foil hats are on aisle 9...

I gotta be honest, I have a wired Swann 1080p system and I replaced one with a 4k camera and looking at all the cameras on one screen, i was a little underwhelmed as I thought 4k would look so much better and it really doesn't. That's just my 2 cents though..

This will depend on the screen that you are viewing at...the smaller the screen the smaller the difference. The main thing on the 4K cameras is when you zoom in (digital) on a snapshot of the footage to identify or try to read plates..and this is where 4K quality will shine compared to a 1080P one.

Ring sure has dropped the ball lately! They certainly cannot compete with the likes of Eufy or Reolink. They NEED to step it up or go by the wayside....

I bought one Eufy and going to see how it goes compared to the Ring and see if the difference is worth booting Ring over.

@@paulcarlin5181 I like my Eufy better than Ring. I've about phased out all my Ring devices. Replaced the doorbell with a Reolink POE doorbell, and all the floodlights with Eufy Floodlights Cam Pro 2. Great coverage with the auto-tracking.
