  • Gold Medal bout of the Second fencing event of the 2022 to 2023 Season - 2022 Tokyo Men's Foil Fencing Team World Cup - Between USA and Japan.
    On the Left - Japan
Since Russia has been banned from competing, Japan has been making the semifinals of events more often - most often losing both bouts to come forth. Since the end of the previous season, Reigning Junior World Champion and 2022 Senior Belgrade Grand Prix Bronze Medalist, IIMURA Kazuki has replaced SAITO Toshiya for most team events. SUZUMURA Kenta is also now in the top 4 again
    On the Right - USA
Team USA is the reigning World Championships Silver medalists, reigning Olympic Bronze Medalists, 2019 World Champion, and Silver medalists at the 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018 World Championships. USA also won the first event of this season - Bonn World Cup
It is surprising to see that Race IMBODEN has still not returned to competition after the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, especially as Olympic Qualifications will begin later this season and Race still has not fenced in the individual event since 2012. Chase EMMER is also missing, so Miles CHAMLEY-WATSON (who made top 8 at Bonn) is back to fill the fourth spot.
Surprisingly, on the first day, Meinhardt and Chamley-Watson both failed to qualify for the individual top 64. Also, now the four members are split by two clubs - Massialas and Meinhardt are coached by Greg Massialas from the Massialas Foundation and Nick Itkin and Miles Chamley-Watson are coached by Misha Itkin from LAIFC

Shikine’s not feeling it huh, well done to both teams. Also, Champs is back on the US team again so I expect loads of trick shots in the near future.

I have never seen Miles counterattack this much in the space of 15 points. I'm glad to see he's found an approach that's working for him in high pressure bouts following his hiatus 👏💯

It's not really a hiatus, more like "just couldn't make top 64 for a bit"

You're welcome! I loved the match-ups too. Italy v USA/France are happening almost every comp. It's nice to have a change, especially with some different fencers on their teams

Thank you for posting. Is there video anywhere of the semifinal bouts? I'm fascinated by how Japan keeps getting past Italy

I feel like at this point I have to sadly accept that Race just silently retired and won't be coming back to senior men's foil. He was definitely one of my favorite fencers to watch in competition, so it's a shame, but he's been there done that for 90% of top fencing achievements, and I certaintly can't blame him (if he indeed decided to retire).
Also very interesting that with Miles back on the team, they steamroll the competition (no one got more than 31 points against them) even though individually the US fencers aren't performing as we know they can. I bet Miles brings much more to the team than just his fencing (like being a hype man), and he might have played a bigger role in the famed US senior men's foil team 5 peat than I originally gave him credit for.

Why does it say USA vs Japan in English but France vs Japan in Japanese?
