the aliens-disguised-as-regular-humans episode of anthro reviewed broke me to tears in the middle of a run (don't listen to john while you run, y'all) because that was my first obsession spiral as well as a small kid and it was probably the time in my life that i felt the biggest sense of being understood by a piece of someone's work, not only because of the ocd but because of the gut wrenching feel of being in the midst of it. i am deeply grateful for that one :)

I haven't listened to that episode, so when John talked about it in this video, my jaw hit the floor. I had the exact same obsession! I don't think I have OCD (at least nothing close to a severe case), and these thoughts didn't cause me intense distress as a kid. After I grew out of it, I assumed it was a normal thought until I started telling people about it and I saw their concerned expressions.
@@TeamNevilleL i have had other friends mention it as a worry, but nothing like the very intense fear i had, mostly just kid imagination. i feel like for those of us with mental illness (whichever one), it can make kid stuff develop into terrifying things. i do recommend the episode, it's a great listen, but beware of listening in public to avoid emotional breakdowns
@@TeamNevilleL you should listen to the episodes! I think it's Gray Aliens and Rock, Paper, Scissors or something like that. Absolutely incredible, one of my favorites.
Two thoughts that might be a similar expierence, that I still have (I'm a teen), are:
What if my world looks in reality very different, than the one of everyone else? That circles are in reality squares, but because I got thought that the names fpr everything , I can't know, because we talk about the same thing, just that it's something very different than what I always thought it was (I hope you can understand what I mean)
The other thought is, that everyone just acts, acts that I'm normal, wich I'm in reality not, and everyone are just actors, like in the 'Trueman show'.

I can't exactly explain it, but when John very matter-of-factly stated that he would've had ocd anyway, it made me feel...Calm? Something about plainly acknowledging a non-ideal scenario so that you can move on and handle it is really nice

A random reflection on nerdfighteria this pizzamas: I had severe (untreated) social anxiety in college, but for some reason I was still able to wear a ridiculous shirt with a strange white man's mustachioed face on it. IN PUBLIC!!! It's just weird how having a positive association like that makes the attention it might generate more tolerable. I met one of my best friends by wearing that shirt. Thanks, John.
That said, I might need to buy the mask.

I've also been trying to focus my attention away from social media platforms, (save TH-cam, and surprisingly TikTok) and towards books. After an admittedly rough adjustment period, I am happy to report that books are pretty neat.
Pros of reading books: infinite battery life, an escape from *gestures broadly* this, and a deeper understanding of people and everyone's place in the world.
Cons: sometimes I end up sitting wrong and my neck hurts, or I'll start reading at 2pm, then look up and go "Oh it's 3am already?" and then keep reading.
It's a good time

This post is my life experience in words. I also used to read with my head on my wrists a lot and they would end up really sore from that.
But yeah, it's a constant cycle of media, books, media, books, and I must say, books are much more fulfilling.
I’m trying to cut down on social media and start reading more books as well. I started to feel way more positively about the world.
I love how even in a car, John changes the camera so it goes from one side to another. Classic.
As a weeks-long season that can move on the calendar, I believe "Pizzamas" would more accurately be called "Pizzatide".
(That's some deep cut high church humor for four people.)

When I was a small child I had the weirdest existential crisis. I was sitting outside of a donut shop in the car while my mother went in to get a ham and cheese croissant and I just thought "What is no one actually exists? What if all of this is some weird thing I created for myself without knowing it." I was six and the fact that I can still remember everything about that day is astounding.

I walked around a RiteAid for about 15 minutes because I could tell it didn't mean to be a RiteAid, and it took that long for me to figure out that it used to be an Office Depot
I thought about buying a pizza john mask, but my pizza john sweatshirt has been described by my husband as "uniquely disturbing and terrifying" so I don't think I'm going to bring that into my marriage

When I was a kid, I worried I was a figment of someone else's imagination. I recently told my husband this and he said "oh yeah!" I assumed that meant he was also thinking this as a child but it really meant he knows me well enough to not be surprised that I thought this 🤷🏽♀️
My friend Genevieve used to say that this is all a dream she's having in her 7th grade English class. I sometimes find that comforting, knowing that when she wakes up all of this is going to disapear.
When I was little I used to think, for some reason, that I was being filmed, not in a bad way, but like my life was like a movie. And I was both the star and a viewer and that's how I imagined my life.

Vlogbrothers is such a special channel. Even in this otherwise utterly chaotic video where John is voting, driving, and talking about the Rax guy, he still manages to drop a mind-blowing piece of wisdom. “What you do with your attention is, in the end, what you do with your life.” Wow. Yeah, it sure is.
"The stuff that's the loudest and the most outrageous is, to me at least, the stuff of nightmares". I needed to hear that. There's some stuff going down about a content creator in a fandom of mine and I haven't been able to step away from it. It's been so opressively awful but I can't shake the need to look for updates.
I guess it's time to curate my socials much more aggressively.
I learned about a similar lizard people conspiracy theory when I was a kid too, and I also developed an obsession from it, but mine was that only a few people in the world were "real" and that *I* was somehow a "fake" person. That was long before I ever got a diagnosis. It was weird, and scary!
I always really appreciate you talking about OCD on the channel. It's just nice to hear other people talking openly about it, and you remind me that having it doesn't condemn you, if you know what I mean.

Being more conscious of the media and info stream I expose myself to has been a HUGE step I’ve taken to improve my mental health. Thanks for advocating for such positivity by sharing your personal experience with Depression, Anxiety, and OCD it’s really helpful to me to see and be able to share your honesty and humanity.
Wendy’s, Burger King, and Hardee’s also had that weird sunroom. The only one left around me is the old Wendy’s by the dead mall. Burger King had one until last summer when they demolished and rebuilt the whole store.

I'm obsessing over the set today - it looks strangely familiar and I'm thinking "Is that a Model Y interior?" The glass roof is certainly a clue as are the odd, spaceman headrests on the back seat. So I look up Model Y photos and nope, there's more glass over the rear passenger's heads. Maybe it's a Model 3? Nope - neither of those two have that nice swoopy silver curve on the door handles. Well maybe it's a Model X? I nixed that before I even looked it up because the falcon wing doors have a bar in the center. But it looks so familiar - is it a Model S? (Turns out, yep) We can get stuck on some of the most pointless details but once they've piqued our interest, we're hooked!
(This wouldn't have been so embarrassing except that I have a Model S - but how often do I look at the rear seat door handles?)
Oh...my god. There’s a Dairy Queen in canton, tx we would always stop at on our way to my grandparents and it DEFINITELY was a Rax, that greenhouse area felt like the COOLEST place to eat chicken tenders and blizzards

Firstly, I never comment. I watch for a decade, and never comment. BUT there must be some odd subliminal messaging in hanks last video, because last night I dreamed that I was in a future universe where humans had created robots that looked exactly like humans, and I was one of these robots. Yet somehow I retained all my human depth of emotion, which the robots typically didn’t have, and this was stressful as I was trying to hide the fact I was quite like the humans and no actually one of these hollow robot creations. I have never dreamed about anything so fantasy-ish and was very confused by it, and now after this video I am like, wow, a manifestation of my anxieties , LOVE IT. Anyway... as they say, there’s nothing more boring that hearing about other people’s dreams

vlogbrothers I went there all the time growing up with my mom, it would be a tradition to go to the library and then we’d get lunch at rax and then the park. It really upset me when it closed down, it held out quite a while even after the Raxpocalypse
Vlogbrothers videos were a lot of what I payed attention to as a young teen, and I'm really grateful for how they helped to shape me into a more thoughtful person, and influenced me to value community and unbridled love and enthusiasm.
I had my tonsils out on the first day of pizzamas (the surgeon described them as ‘grizzly’) and my recovery has been much improved knowing I have a vlogbrothers video to watch each day. Thanks, brothers 💖

Fun fact for those of us in Indy : the Fazoli’s at 86th and Township Line Road was once a Rax ! The alligator cups are one of my favorite fast food memories from my childhood.

The end really poked into my feels
This reminds me of this idea I had a few years back, when I wanted to post a list of all the feeds I consumed (like, blogs and news sites, but also all twitter accounts I followed, etc.) on my website, in an effort to externalise my particular information bubble and give people an idea what shaped my ideas and arguments. I still kinda want to do this, but my daily media consumption went way down since then, I don‘t have twitter anymore. And one big problem is, how to structure Inter-human discourse into such a list of possible influences. Well, thank you John, for reminding me of this particular side project which is somewhere on some backburner of my mind.

I did not grow up near a Rax, but I did grow up in the 80s and the last two videos are so nostalgic and I just love it so much...

I mean, when you're posting two videos per week, you're bound to trip over some videos that will send you soaring into the trending sections. Great videos as always
when John started talking about how he used to think other people weren't humans it just made me think about how, when i was a small child, i thought that everyone around me was a robot. i figured that the kids who bullied me for being a weird, awkward, bookish, chubby child, and the people in my family who made me feel incredibly lonely (to the point where i would literally hide in my closet reading and making up stories, perhaps a foreshadow to when i figuratively lived in a closet) could not possibly be humans, because the humans i'd read about in my favorite books were kind and heartfelt and took care of each other. i'm in my mid-20s now and i can safely say that i no longer believe that the people i surround myself with are robots.
