I lived in China from 2004 to 2015. Corruption is endemic in China, particularly with government officials who see those jobs as ways to make a lot of money. Not from salaries, which are actually quite low, but from bribery and corruption. The problem is that nearly all officials are corrupt to some extent, so corruption in China is almost impossible to weed out.

@specialed6357 my understanding of the "water in the missiles" is a reference to their missiles using sub-optimal, cheaper rocket fuel in order for the officials to pocket the difference. Missiles are kept empty until it's time to load them, due to the highly caustic nature of the fuel.

I have seen different interpretations of this report, and I am glad someone else has pointed out that translating exactly what is happening is problematic. I really think the content creators should have added some nuance instead of running with the literal report of "water" being used instead of rocket fuel. Aside from the possibility that this was lost in translation the majority of liquid fueled rockets have been phased out of the Chinese military, so that should have been another indicator that one should not accept this verbatim. Nonetheless, the greater claim that the CCP military is rife with corruption is probably valid.

Mid-range missiles and drones launched from the northern part of the Philippines can hit Chinese ships and even fighter/bomber planes in the Taiwan Straits that are heading towards Taiwan.
Add to that US planes launched from the Philippines.
The decision of Philippine President Marcos Jr to move closer to the US and allow the US access to more bases in the Philippines makes any Chinese invasion of Taiwan extremely difficult and costly if Marcos Jr allows the US to utilize bases and areas in the Philippines in case China invades Taiwan.

It would be nice if those missile had water in them. However, rocket fuel is very corrosive, and the missile would need to be launched soon after fuel is put in it. That's why most rockets or missiles are stored with fuel use a solid fuel, not liquid. So, if you add fuel and don't use the missile, you need to drain it, change the gaskets, O-rings, and fuel lines.

Storing liquid fuel in the rockets is a very unlikely scenario as these volatile solutions would be hard on the rocket parts. Most missiles of this type are fueled right before launch for this reason. Solid fuel has no liquid fuel, obviously. One theory is that the fuel tanks were tested with water to validate their sealing upon initially assembly and that it's really a testiment to the poor quality control measures that the water is left in the tanks.

Taiwan produces an overwhelming share of the high-end computer chips that are needed to run modern economies. The US, Korea and Japan can also produce these, but not in the volume and price point that Taiwan can. This is not a "head knowledge" issue, it involves having and being able to use the equipment needed to produce the chips, which is why we see the US and other nations putting priority on increasing domestic production of these chips. If I were an official in Taiwan, I would make sure that the CCP was informed the ability to produce these chips would be completely destroyed once it became apparent that the CCP would be successful in an invasion. In the past, the CCP has not been able to produce the high-end chips, although there are rumors, they may have recently had a breakthrough that corrects that problem. That still doesn't eliminate the volume issue, though, and an economy like China's that is dependent on exports using these chips, could face serious problems if Taiwan's production is no longer available.

Liquid fuel (hydrazine) is too corrosive to a missile to fuel much in advance of use. The US has moved to solid fuels, however fueling a missile only took several minutes.

Should China decide to invade Taiwan, it's likely to take a page from the Ukraine war: meat wave attacks forever and ever. The big problem with that idea though is they'll likely run out of ships and boats to do so before they can secure the island. This is also why Ukraine has been so important to everybody: a robust defense along with the determination of a people to be free against an adversary much larger than it, has shown that it's possible. Along of course with all the weaponry they've been provided.
And Taiwan is equally as determined to be and remain free. Taiwan would appear to be taking a page from Iwo Jima from WW2: launch attacks from mountainous bunkers and bases all over the island. And Taiwan hasn't just been sitting back: they have robust defenses already in place - and they've been learning the value of drones from Ukraine - and guess who makes the best chips in the world for the best militaries in the world, indeed in the private sector too? Once the ships to transport troops are all destroyed, then a human war of attrition is on Taiwan's side.
As at least one other commenter has noted, one of the reasons China wants Taiwan: it's chip factories - has I believe, _zero_ chance of remaining intact should they invade. Even if they should succeed, it would be a pyrrhic victory. And it's one thing to take something - quite another to keep it. While I do think the U.S. would intervene, another scenario is that we might do it in a way that crushes China economically. The U.S. can blockade the _oceans_ from China. We only need to starve China from critical goods for maybe 6 months before China would lose the capability not only to wage any kind of war or occupation of Taiwan, but even to supply its own citizenry with critical goods and services. We also might attack their currency in a way it could not deal with. Such as getting allies to refuse to take Chinese currency (what little is accepted now), plus knowing the U.S. would turn away any shipping from anybody anywhere on the high seas.
The U.S. has secured the world's oceans for unmolested travel since just after WW2. It would not take much for us as the great enabler of that system to become the great _dis_abler of that same system. We are the one nation in the world that can do that. China cannot project their power beyond regionally. They have very little in the way of a blue-water Navy. China has a pretty impressive regional Navy for sure - but they lack enough troop carriers. Even if they had enough initially, they would lose them pretty rapidly. China's currently moribund import/export model for goods would collapse completely, probably within 6 months.
China would run out of oil to prosecute the war. Here's a site that shows where China imports its oil from. Here are two sites to consider:
    www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61843#:
    sites.tufts.edu/gis/files/2013/02/Brutlag_Daniel.pdf
You will see that China imports much of her oil by ocean waterways. Even from Russia. We might tell Russia they'll have to sell to others: China's off the table for now. This assumes that Ukraine doesn't continue to damage Russia's oil infrastructure to the point what's left, Russia will need for itself for its _own_ war.
Does Xi understand all this? Short answer: we don't know what he actually does know at this point: he keeps shooting the messengers. I share our USAF military commander's concern that Xi might attack anyway in 2025. The U.S. is closing the window to any serious ability for China to prosecute such a war. If China's going to try it, it would have to be soon.

How do you call gaining back renegade territory ' invasion'!!!!

    • @Michaelw777.52
      @Michaelw777.52 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@josephlau9585 You have it backwards. It was the Communists that were the renegades at the time. The Qing dynasty annexed the island in 1683 - but didn't ask the native Taiwanese what they thought about it.
So if force is your metric for Chinese claim of the island, the Kuomintang evolving into the current government have that claim.
Finally - 77% of the Taiwanese themselves wish to remain independent or at least as they are. Clearly you don't think they have that right, but others disagree with you.
Had the CCP taken a different tack, especially recently, with their other SE Asian neighbors, the situation might have turned out differently, but what they're doing in the S. China Sea is absurd and provocative. How else did you expect them to respond?
On a related subject, China has a much stronger claim to the territory Russia took from her in the 19th century. And that is significant and important land, tactically and strategically. A CCP decision to retake that territory would put the U.S. and allies in a real quandary. It's not as if we would suddenly decide to come in on Russia's side with the Ukraine war running. You have a much stronger legal claim there.
But trying to take Taiwan? That is a lose/lose for everyone. Should China actually manage to take and hold Taiwan, you can be sure TSMC and other chip manufacturing buildings would be rubble before that.

The thing about the water instead of fuel wouldn't be right any way, missiles are kept empty until launch due to corrosion, when the count down starts for launch fuel is rapidly pumped in and if the launch is called off the tanks are emptied and cleaned to prevent damage due to corrosion.
Plus the translations have also been proven wrong with the Chinese word for water being similar to others.
All in all the people in charge of the missiles would have to be dummer than preschoolers to put water in missiles that have not been prepped for launch.

How do you think the PLA troops are going to get to Taiwan? It is going to take between 500,000 to 2,000,000 troops to take the island, depending on which estimate you read, and moving that many troops to ports to board ships, and moving the ships needed to transport these troops to these ports, is going to be visible to all from space. There will be no "surprise attack" like the Japanese did at Pearl Harbor. No, my guess is that the PLA will pound Taiwan with missiles in an attempt to knock out as many of the defenses as they can, because otherwise, Taiwan will sink a significant number of the transport ships trying to reach the island, and in the very likely event that the US and Japan (and probably others) get involved, there is a very real risk that none of these ships will make it through. BTW, I was in the Air Force during Vietnam, although never made it there. I remember Vietnam well, and there is no comparison to the situation here.

First, because of the treacherous waters around Taiwan, an amphibious assault is almost impossible except for a few months out of the year. Second, it's 100 miles from mainland China to Taiwan. If China launched a fleet of warships, it would be detected instantly, giving Taiwan plenty of time to call its allies for help. Fighter jets from Japan and the Philippines could be in Taiwan long before the fleet arrived.
