This one brought back some good memories; I grew up in the mountains of southwest Virginia, and I can remember a bit of competitiveness around applesauce and fresh apple cake recipes/results. My own grandmother took real pride in her applesauce cakes and they were a holiday tradition for us and her neighbors - she started baking multiple cakes in October for the holidays and keep them in a deep freezer until a few days before needed. She always said that black walnuts (gathered, hulled, and shelled by my grandad) were the secret to a great cake.

It was fun watching you prepare Olivia's Applesauce Cake. I have always wondered about its recipe and how good it tastes. Maybe someday I will try making it, too. I bake an Applesauce Cake for every Christmas, but I use a recipe from the early 80s that's in my Betty Crocker cookbook. It doesn't require separate bowls or sifting or any of the extra steps so many cake recipes call for. All of the ingredients are put into a bowl and a mixer is used to mix it together. I don't frost the cake, but instead just sift some confectioner's sugar over the top once it's cooled. Thank you so much for sharing this enjoyable video. I loved it.
Hi Judy! I'm sitting here beaming because I have the exact same backsplash and cutting board 🥰and a resounding YES to more cooking segments! Thank you so much for all of your eagerly anticipated and appreciated videos. Happy summer .

Thank you Judy for sharing this applesauce cake. That looks delicious.I think I'll make that for my birthday party at our senior apts next Sat on July 23rd.I remember Gramma and Olivia love to make apple sauce cake.
Your kitchen is much more modern than Olivia would have used. I grew up in the 70's & 80's using a kitchen much like the one you used on the set of the Walton's. We did have the electric stove but that was used very little during the winter months while we heated with the wood fired kitchen cook stove. Those were the days!
Great. I loved my grandma's applesauce cake. She'd also make it into cookies. So delicious and so sticky. Not much sugar outside of the apples. And no frosting. Thanks for sharing!
@@judynorton2598 Grandmas are inventive. Mine would have been closer to Olivia and John's age than Grandma and Grandpa. My grandparents were raising children during the depression.
I read the book in the early 70's and many times since so have had the recipe a long time. Finally made it a year ago with my first ever homemade applesauce. First thoughts were that some things are better to imagine. Thinking more we are spoiled today with ingredients and fine deserts. In this recipe I could taste a simpler time, that Christmas of 'The Homecoming' and the day I picked the apples and made the sauce. I'll make it again. I've said it here before, I hope someone will take on putting together a Waltons Mountain cookbook.
As I said, my first time making it also :). I think there are recipes floating around, but I’m not sure how many are actually Walton recipes for real or cast recipes for real if advertised that way.
Thanks Judy, Applesauce cake is one of my favorite. You can make an easier version by using a spice cake mix and just use applesauce instead of water. Take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
Applesauce cake is so good. I’ve never had frosting on it though. Yes, a cooking show with some of the food they ate. That soup that Elizabeth liked would be great! Thanks!
Watching "The Homecoming" was a Christmas tradition in my house growing up. When I was in my early teens I decided to make an applesauce cake one holiday season. It's such a delicious, old-timey, cozy treat that it became a tradition in our family and was a particular favorite of my late mother. My sister asked me a few years ago how applesauce cake became a tradition in our family, as I presented the annual applesauce cake at a holiday gathering, and I relayed the story that it was a tradition we had adopted from the Walton's. Even though I am a recovering alcoholic, a little bourbon still finds it's way into the recipe because it's the "secret ingredient" and the cake doesn't taste as good without it. Loved this cooking segment, Judy. I hope you will do more. Maybe the strawberry preserves from the county fair episode? LOL.
I can't wait to make this! BTW - you can substitute pure vanilla extract for the bourbon/whiskey. Pure vanilla extract has 35% alcohol in it. The alcohol actually gets cooked off when the cake is baked, so the bourbon or vanilla are for flavor.
Judy that was SO MUCH FUN! I loved it. Please, please, please do this again! It was a blast. Incidentally, you have an amazing kitchen. My wife and I gutted our kitchen and did a 'money is no object' renovation a few years back. We never eat out and cook everything ourselves so it was worth it. Also noticed the beautiful cutting board. I make my own so I always appreciate a quality cutting board. Cheers!
Thank you. This is the second kitchen remodel we’ve done in the past 4 years. We had just redone our previous kitchen not knowing we’d end up moving 2 years later… lol - but then they say “kitchens sell houses”. Ended up getting a new house with a kitchen that needed updating - so redid this one this year. The cutting board was a lovely house warming gift from my brother and his wife :). Although I actually rarely cook - I do love a nice inviting kitchen.
This was terrific Ms Judy. I will definitely have to be making this recipe of the apple sauce cake. I love your beautiful kitchen. Thank you for sharing. Have a great rest of your day and week. God's speed.

@@judynorton2598 that would be great. I love The Waltons as much as the next guy, but maybe let's talk about something else sometimes. There's more to Judy Norton than The Waltons.

Grew up watching the Waltons. Watch it now with my girls. Today is a chilly fall day so we decided to bake Olivia's applesauce cake. We have been making our own applesauce so we had that to use in the cake. We did NOT however have any 'Recipe' to use in the icing, so we used apple juice. Turned out pretty good and the kitchen smells pretty good too
You are so amazing Judy. You could have a Waltons Kitchen show and thousands of us would watch your show. You will get even more famous and well known for different things. An athlete work out exercise show??!!
I remember the episode "The Air Mail Man" where it was Olivia's birthday and Mary Ellen, Erin and Elizabeth were helping Grandma make a birthday cake. You and Erin couldn't remember if you had put the baking soda in, Grandma had just about had it with you guys! This video immediately made me think of that scene. Thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories!
You may not have made this cake before, but I can tell you are a natural in the kitchen as you know what you are doing. I'm sending this to my Mom as I am a fish out of water in the kitchen. But what I do know is video production and this is very professional editing & overall production.
I have heard about Livvy's Applesauce Cake ever since you guys were out in the barn cracking walnuts, and Olivia going off to Ike's for two pounds of sugar. Plus grandma questioning whether she should spend the money for the sugar and grandpa saying it wouldn't be Christmas without Livvy's Applesauce Cake. Then grandma chimes in "puts too much nutmeg in it for my taste". What wonderful writing and acting. Many years later I wondered what an Applesauce cake would taste like so I looked a recipe up and decided to make it. It wasn't anything close to how you just made it and I have to say the one I made while it wasn't bad, it was just fair. The texture didn't even look like yours. Maybe I will get adventurous and try Olivia's and Janes recipes. It was fun seeing you in the kitchen. I love your ovens. I have a pair of Kitchen Aid ovens similar to yours. Can you just imagine Olivia and grandma having appliances like those? I'll bet grandma would say they are not as good as the old fashioned oven. I noticed you did not use any kind of mixer at all, just by hand. Could a KitchenAid mixer be used or is it specifically to be made by stirring?
This is the only applesauce cake recipe I have tried - so nothing else to compare it to. My ovens are baking and microwave on top. As for a mixer, I’m thinking you could use one until you add the nuts and raisins so you don’t cut those up.
We don't drink much alcohol in our house outside of some wine around the holidays, so I never had bourbon for the frosting and didn't want to buy a whole bottle. I saw you used the travel-sized bourbon which is a great idea I never thought of. Fun episode. Thanks!
LOL - I bought an actual bottle of whisky since I never drink it - then discovered I had a sample size someone gave me in a Christmas gift basket. So now I still have a large bottle that will probably sit in my cupboard for years... :)

This was so fun!☺️Your kitchen is chic! I baked JB's Applesauce cake when my children were young. I used a Bundt pan and colored the frosting green with some holly leaf decorations for Christmas. I also added a ton more cinnamon and a little less nutmeg! (Afterall, Grandma said "there was too much nutmeg for her taste"😄) I think never in cinematic history has a food item had such celebrity (except maybe the tossed spaghetti in The Odd Couple and Lucy's chocolates!) I used Rum! Yum! Definitely would enjoy more cooking episodes, Judy. I like how you stirred everything by hand! Depression Era homes would most likely not have had a KitchenAid. Forget lifting weights at the gym; bake without a mixer! I have two Depression-Era cookbooks and sugar and meat are hardly ever mentioned! This was just lovely! You are so thoughtful,Judy/MaryEllen. I loved in the Homecoming when Mary Ellen balked at helping with the applesauce cake. Then later, after Daddy had returned, Olivia says she'll make some coffee. Your kitchen is much more modern than Olivia would have used. I grew up in the 70's & 80's using a kitchen much like the one you used on the set of the Walton's. We did have the electric stove but that was used very little during the winter months while we heated with the wood fired kitchen cook stove. Those were the days!
Yep - we just did a kitchen remodel.
Well this was different and fun! I'll have to make a couple of these...one with the bourbon for the adults and one without for the grandkids.
Sounds like a plan. I also have a great rum cake recipe… perhaps I’ll dig that one out.
This was a nice addition. Listening to stories while watching you is relaxing, please don’t feel the need to fast forward, just talk to us.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great. I loved my grandma's applesauce cake. She'd also make it into cookies. So delicious and so sticky. Not much sugar outside of the apples. And no frosting.
Thanks for sharing!
What a cool idea to make it as cookies.
How fun! You’ll have to try the cake with fresh raspberries that Olivia entered at the fair and won $5. Thank you and enjoy the cake.
I have not seen a recipe for that one.
Thanks Judy,
Applesauce cake is one of my favorite. You can make an easier version by using a spice cake mix and just use applesauce instead of water. Take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
Cool. Thanks :)
Yes Judy do more cooking if you can 😍
She IS a natural!!
Thank you .
Applesauce cake is so good. I’ve never had frosting on it though. Yes, a cooking show with some of the food they ate. That soup that Elizabeth liked would be great! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Judy, send me a piece of apple sauce cake! 😁👍🍰
Me too! Also a serving of 🍑 cobbler.
I love cobbler, that may be on my list to share.
LOL.
Glad you enjoyed this.
I made this cake once for our teacher Christmas party at my school and it was absolutely delicious!!!
Wonderful.
I love baking with applesauce. It provides a lot of moisture without all the fat. It’s great for brownies too
Never thought of that. Thanks.
I am not a baker, but this recipe looks really simple to make. Looks delish!
I’m not much of a cook or baker either and it was pretty simple.
I can't wait to make this! BTW - you can substitute pure vanilla extract for the bourbon/whiskey. Pure vanilla extract has 35% alcohol in it. The alcohol actually gets cooked off when the cake is baked, so the bourbon or vanilla are for flavor.
Good to know - although the frosting doesn't get baked, so there's no way to burn it off.
Thank you so much.
That was a 5 star video, Judy! I think you have the beginning of “Baking with Judy” to compliment your “Ask Judy” series.
Totally agree!
Oh yay!
Judy when I get home from roller skating I'm watching Waltons home coming I love movie and your videos
Thanks so much. Roller skating - cool :)
Well that was fun. Enjoyed watching you make that cake which looked and sounded delicious. I'm going to have to find that book by Earl Hamner to get the recipe and read the book. I know I can right down the recipe from your video but would also like to see the book.
$$$$$ 😆 😆
I wrote out the recipe in the video description on my channel for this video. So you can grab it easily from there.
@@judynorton2598 Thanks Judy. When I watched the video, I was able to pause it and write it down.
I love to make applesauce cake and keep it in the fridge. It gets tastier as it sits for a few days
That's great!
this is a wonderful surprise change of pace. it's good to see another side of you. hows about a video of you riding the horse or working out or whatever else you do. i know i speak for every one of us who are more interested in Judy than Mary Ellen.
That's a wonderful idea! I would love to see the horses and learn about riding! 🧡🐎
@@hollyavillella554 thanks. let's hope judy thinks so too.
Thank you for the interest. Perhaps something for the future.
@@judynorton2598 that would be great. I love The Waltons as much as the next guy, but maybe let's talk about something else sometimes. There's more to Judy Norton than The Waltons.
Try to get a virtual interview segment with Kami and Mary in which it shows Kami and Mary fixing food in their own homes.
Nice idea.
Thank you very much for sharing this with us, Ms. Norton. I feel it pays a loving tribute to your television family, especially to Grandma. I had a special soft spot for her. She exhibited such emotion, she made me tear up more times than I can count.
Thank you so much!
Turned out pretty good and the kitchen smells pretty good too
Wonderful.
Fun segment! Really like the decor of your kitchen too. Would love to see the occasional Cooking with Judy segment!
Happy to hear that.
You are so amazing Judy. You could have a Waltons Kitchen show and thousands of us would watch your show. You will get even more famous and well known for different things. An athlete work out exercise show??!!
So many ideas… :)
@@judynorton2598 you are so sweet that we would love to have your expert advice with the talent that you have.
I don't bake but I really enjoyed watching. I would enjoy a big slice of your Olivia's Applesauce Cake too.
Thanks.
Mary Ellen learned well. Judy does so very well going over the Waltons.
Like Mary Ellen, I’m not much of a cook :)
Thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories!
lol - that’s right! The pitfalls of too many cooks in the kitchen :)
You may not have made this cake before, but I can tell you are a natural in the kitchen as you know what you are doing. I'm sending this to my Mom as I am a fish out of water in the kitchen. But what I do know is video production and this is very professional editing & overall production.
I could tell too. She did a great job!!!
Thank you so much.
❤ This is great Judy i will sure Make this! 🍰 Aww i can see Grandma & Grandpa Walton in this 😊 thanks Judy!
You are so welcome
We don't drink much alcohol in our house outside of some wine around the holidays, so I never had bourbon for the frosting and didn't want to buy a whole bottle. I saw you used the travel-sized bourbon which is a great idea I never thought of. Fun episode. Thanks!
LOL - I bought an actual bottle of whisky since I never drink it - then discovered I had a sample size someone gave me in a Christmas gift basket. So now I still have a large bottle that will probably sit in my cupboard for years... :)
Judy you are such a wonderful host. ( which is one of the many reasons we love this show). You made this cooking ( baking) segment look like so much fun. I say, yes please do more of these from The Walton Cookbook. Or your own recipes. I just may try this around Christmas time. .. Maybe sooner. Thank you..
I agree with everyone here, about your terrific applesauce cake special. Being a really cool calm and interesting, relatable host Judy, you make all the difference with your real-life audience :o) Life has been so painstakingly hard ever since covid - So I, We thank you even more for bringing us a piece of (applesauce) joy during tough times.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful kitchen. That was another special treat.
Thank you so much!
Judy you are always such a delight to this tired old soul, and this time was both a delight , and a wonderful surprise! I wonder if Michael has ever tried out that recipe for herself? You know, that would really be astounding if you and her could pull off a cooking segment together as one of these shows of yours hon!!!
Unlikely, but it would be fun.
Do more kitchen segments Judy.
I never made this recipe of applesauce cake but I made an applesauce loaf cake for many years. When my children were young, they always looked forward to that treat. My son learned to make it for his family.
Sounds great!
Judy absolutely do more cooking episodes. That cake looked delicious. You were terrific. Thanks Judy 👏🏻💕
Thanks!
I’m in my 20s and really enjoy watching the Walton’s with my family and watching this cooking segment was so much fun!! Olivia’s Applesauce Cake looks and sounds divine! 💗💗😋😋
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm so glad that you chose to make the applesauce cake on this segment. I've always wondered if there was an actual recipe that you all used and you proved that there was. Now I have to get the book so I can try that recipe. It's too bad that this wasn't a smell Vision because I would like to have been able to smell that cake. I also wish I could reach into this picture and tasted that cake. LOL thank you so much for sharing this recipe with us and I hope you do another one of the recipes that was often on The Waltons. Is there a Walton cookbook?
Yes it’s on Amazon
I believe there is a Walton's cookbook, I just have no idea where the actual recipes came from.
I absolutely love when I am watching The Homecoming and they say 'it just wouldn't be Christmas without Mama's applesauce cake'. Patricia Neal (who I adored) headed to the store to buy some 'sugah'.
Fun to have holiday traditions.
"She puts too much nutmeg in it for my taste" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was making this for years..My families Holiday favorite.
Oh yay!
Oh my goodness, what a fun surprise this was! I absolutely loved this, please please do more cooking segments of Walton's recipes(or other). I can't wait to try this recipe myself:) Thank you!
Funny, but there weren’t any actual Walton recipes except the Applesauce cake.
@@judynorton2598 Then you are welcome to make another cooking video about anything you like:)
@@judynorton2598 You mean there isn’t a recipe for Grandma’s famous fudge? I enjoyed watching you bake.
I literally just made this on sunday and it was a hit with everyone in my family.
Happy to hear that.
I get applesauce cake every year for my birthday. It's December 18th. Could you make more recipes from the cookbook? Have a good day
I loved Judys cooking segment here!! Yes!
I don’t know that there is an actual Hamner Family cookbook.
I think it happened to be One included recipe at the back of the book. But perhaps some of the dishes they made on the Waltons could be done
My mom grew up on the Walton's. And when she had me. I grew up watching it too. I'm 26 now and a huge fan! I actually make the applesauce cake recipe for Christmas time
I love that! So happy to hear that.
This soft, sweet voice pipes in from MaryEllen, "I'll help you, Mama!" Lovely everything! Bless you! 🧡💐
I was thinking it sounded like a lot of nutmeg! Usually cinnamon is the bigger spice. Still, I want to try this recipe.💓
@@carynmason3421 😄🧡🎂
I’ve never had a real mixer, so I’ve always been old school :)
@@judynorton2598 I got my first mixer in my 40's and it was life-changing!! I immediately found a great cookie recipe for Christmas and its become a classic. Holiday baking!! 😍

I bet that applesauce cake was delicious judy sounds yummy to me like to have some of that cake delicious sounding love the recipe to make it awesome thanks judy

Nice surprise Judy. Ina future segment you should try to make the cake that Olivia made for the county fair that had some of the Baldwin sisters’ “recipe” in the frosting!😁
That would be cool, but I’ve never seen a recipe for that.
Hi!
Cooking with Judy sounds like a great idea.
I have “A Walton Christmas - Together Again” CD which I love and that recipe is in there. Watching this I’m going to make one.
I just love The Walton’s. I grew up watching the series with my grandmother. Watching it now reminds me of her.
Add some RSO Judy and wed

I would love a cooking segment! Please bake Verdi’s Burnt Cinnamon Cake. I would have loved to try one, it always sounded so good
Have never encountered that recipe. There really weren’t recipes we saw for all the meals and cakes talked about on the show.
You should have Michael in the kitchen with you when you made the applesauce cake
That would have been fun.
I would love to get that book for my mom she loved that movie it brings back memories for her
So sweet.
Judy do you happen to know where I can get that book? I've looked on Amazon and couldn't find it
