I've been recording drum sessions professionally for about 7 years in my home studio and I'm still getting a lot of work. So I don't think recording acoustic drums is dying yet. Its still alive and well. :) Cheers
I teach guitar to a young lady here in Madrid. Nikki & Jen you are both AWESOME inspiration for her!! She started at 7 on a pink mini RG. She´s just 11 now - with all the usual distractions - so guitar on the back-burner a bit.. But we´re getting there =) =)
Laying foundation for Nita, wouldn't be easy task, she is very fluent, also the two shows I attended, impressed within her extraordinary endurance throughout 120-minutes. Good for her to have her personal space to practice, so it does have a purpose.
I like to think of programmed drums as a different beast to real drums, both have their advantages yeah but once you realize that they’re 2 different things you can take advantage of both of them, (especially if you’re making industrial metal)
I'm a drummer and I have no problem programming drums or with people using programmed drums. Create what you want, how you want to create it. No one gets mad when a carpenter uses a chalk line, laser level etc.
it's weird to see him be nice to people... but deep down we all know that's his real personality, and he just likes doing rant videos (which is a bit sad cause his regular voice is kind of calming)
1:24 Exactly... Even though quality matters, people get all up in arms over "stellar quality", even though guitar is often a bunch of lo-fi noise. - I mean, yea, its a little bit of a different story when you want that super beautiful "three dimensional" clean sound or whatever, but other than that... If it's good enough equipment, work with it! It's also like with most other creative things; You want to shoot pictures, use your phone, or any old film-camera with a decent lens. - You want hyper-realism? Then blow thousands on the top end cameras out today. But other than that...
Here's a recording question for Nita: Using the method you describe in the video, in what order do you track your instruments? Do you lay down permanent guitar and bass using the programmed drums as a guide, then record drums? Or do you create a full demo version and use the demo as a guide track while you record in a more traditional order? Or is it something else entirely? However you do it, it sounds great!
Glenn: So you two sit there with guitars in your hands Guitarists: Oh, we're going to play some riffs? Glenn: Nope, just hold them Dope vid though. I have a 4 input berringher interface and it kicks ass
Shit. does it make me sexist that i didn't notice that the ladies never played!? am i just used to pretty ladies holding pretty instruments, smiling lots, but not playing? oh, wait... no. it's because i saw the last vid in which they do play their guitars. Whew!
Is it the 202HD? I just bought the 22 off reverb but requested a refund so I could spend the extra 20 bucks and get the 202HD instead. Im hoping the higher sample rate makes a difference.
JackstandJohnny I got the 404hd but the 202s are great too. I was worried because Beringher tends to make some shitty stuff sometimes but was very impressed with this. Even has pads to keep guitar inputs from spazzing out
I honestly don't mind as long as they sound good and are well made(not SUPER generic). Piano Roll is better than MIDI sequencer for this IMO. I'm not the old "ONLY REEEL INSTRUMENTS" guy, although I respect why people, especially old schoolers like Glenn would feel that way in the face of overproduced pap. 'Feel' CAN be reproduced digitally and I am personally more open to digital.
That's basically why I simply had to record my own drum samples. Because no matter what you do SD or AD or EZD or whatever will always sound generic and it's impossible to have your own drum sound by using a "drumpler".
And you know what drives me nuts? It's the thing with drumplers that you can't load up your own samples with all the microphones and stuff. The only way is to use Kontakt. Oh, and is there a freeware/inexpensive alternative? No way!
I'm not a drummer but I'm talking about the option to have a custom sound. No drumplers like AD ($200ish) or EZD (more less ~$160) offer the option to load up all your samples and mix them in the drumpler box. That would be awesome. Because right now it's only Kontakt that does that and it's like $470.
For instance, you go to a little studio, you pay about $50 for your 3 hour session (assuming they have all the backline you need) and you're good to go with your samples. The problem lies in the lack of availablity of the drum sampling software.
Pumpkinned- I paid $600 Cdn for Superior 3 but that's because I don't have access to a drummer and as a songwriter I needed a way to get my songs out that are in my head or it drives me nuts. I would rather use real drums but until that's an option for me ( live in a small farming community not a hell of a lot of choices lol) I'll have to deal with programming my own. Devin Townsend recorded the first Ziltoid album with V1 of EZ drummer and that guy is a God of creativity I respect him so much. Just goes to show use the tools you have at your disposal. The drums in the following link are Superior Drummer 3 with my own preset I made sounds good far as I'm concerned , may need to work on the mix a bit but that's why I'm going to OIART in september. soundcloud.com/where-evil-dwells/night-of-long-knives
I completely agree with using a live drummer. However for me I am a one man computer band and when I program the drum parts I go as far as to nudge some of the midi notes so it doesn’t sound to robotic in the hopes of a more natural sound.
100% agree with nita i make progressive dance metal so the drums are programmed but when we play live, my drummer makes the songs so much bigger and better with his acoustic kit wish i had the budget to get studio time xD
I'm a drummer of 30 years, with my kit permanently mic'd up and ready to go. For the life of me, I find it impossible to program ez drummer. Go figure.
No loss to you. Big loss to your audience. There is nothing worse than seeing a band live without a drummer. Who am I kidding though. Nobody sees live music anymore.
Such a lucky man !!!!! Like you said glenn, " how did I grt here ". Lol. I hear ya. I would have been stumbling over my words and getting tongue tied way more than you. You did a great job !! Also, you know damn well how you ended up in that seat. Positioned between those 2 awzome women. ......YEARS OF HARD WORK..... A GIFT WELL DESERVED !!! You kick ass Glenn
An interesting note, guitar players that start out as drummers or learned drums have very specific timing compared to those who didn't play or don't play drums at all!
He's told that story enough times that I went out and got one of those Behringer mixers. Pretty good and cheap investment. Not only do I use it to blend cab mics, but also to blend vocal mics.
If I got to hang out with Ulrich Wild and learn some stuff from him I'd be telling the story too. I don't blame Glen one bit. It was probably an exciting moment for him. Meeting and engineer he respected and learning something from him. All Power to him.
Adam Fox- me too. i've always blended different style mics together from the first day i started recording. gotta have a pre-mix! (it helps a lot, if all you have is relatively cheap-but notably different mics too). so far you're the only other person i've heard of that dual mics vocals. Twinsies!
Slaves Forging, I've basically been experimenting, as I only got the mixer a few weeks ago. Blended an SM58 with a Sterling ST51 FET condenser. Had the former going through an Art MP preamp before the mixer. I liked the sound I got with the blend. My vocals need all the help they can get.
HOLY SHIT! Did you just say you understood a bedroom musician using drum programs and there's nothing wrong with it!?!?!?! I believe my heart just stopped...
I think mostly, a group shot thumbnail would mean having text over everyones face as well as making everyone's face three times smaller, and secondly Nita is more recognisable.
My thought as someone who does zero recording of any kind is program drums are great for someone to put down what's in their head and hand it to the drummer and say that's what I want and give them a starting point
I mean programmed drums are sometimes the only alternative, when you don't have a drummer. That said I am considering using some "drum kit" esque hand percussion, such as cajon, to emulate the sound of drums, without needing to buy a drum kit which, won't fit on my house. They're cheaper, and they can be outfitted with a piezo pickup for direct input into my DAW, and a double pedal for playing the bass parts. They emulate the sounds of a snare and kick and come with snares so I will be able to get some skank/blastbeats going, whilst remaining reasonably realistic and organic sounding. With some EQ, compression and Reverb, I would probably be able to make it sound almost like drums, especially once put in the context of a busy metal mix. Just a thought for anyone who is in the same situation.
I've been trying to record drums for my band's demo and, quite frankly, struggling with it. Our problem is no matter how well we try to mix it on the mixer and bring out the low end of the kick for a nice, solid thump, it always comes out super flat and papery. Any ideas on where we could be going wrong? I have decent, even great, gear setup in a nice, open living room area. My kit sounds amazing in the room and was thoroughly tuned by hand and ear by me; but the recorded sound is, pardon my German, absolut Scheiße. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Cheers from across the river in southern Michigan. We're using my guitarist's brother's mics setup, which consists of: 1 SM-57 on the snare; 1 Beta 52-A in the kick; 2 KSM-37s as overheads. The drums we're recording are Tama Rockstars with 3 mounted concert toms (12x8, 12x11, 13x12) and 2 floor toms (14x14, 16x14, both with resos). My snare is a 14x10 Ludwig converted marching snare made from the same alloy as Supraphonics. My kick is a 24x16 with a towel taped along the batter head and no reso, a la Simon Phillips. My cymbals are all Zildjian: 18" K Custom Dark Crash and 20" K Custom Dark Ride as crashes; 20" Amir Ride; 14" K Custom Dark Hi Hats and 16" K Custom Dark Crash (Top) & 16" A Custom Medium Crash (Bottom) as hi hats. All drumheads have been changed recently. Remo Controlled Sounds on all tom batters, Remo Ambassadors as resos on floor toms, Remo Emperor X on the snare batter, and Remo Ambassador Snare Side on the reso. Snare wires are whatever PureSounds my friend put on it before he sold it to me.
I think the correct term is Giggety! Two of the finest, hotest chics with guitars, what's not to like. As always Glenn delivers - oh ye doubters, held thy tongues. How you gonna top that Glenn?
I love using Addictive Drums for demos. But try as I might, I know I'm not going to ever program a Derek Roddy, John Longstreth, or Hannes Grossmann part. Even if I pull the midi from one of their parts, then I'm reusing a performance of a song that already exists. A good live drummer can add elements that I wouldn't think to program in.
@@SpectreSoundStudios Thank you so much, that's a rockin' song. Thanks dude! Much appreciated. Your channel is really interesting and really educational. I love learning about music, recording & equipment, and most of the things I want to learn about YOU have taught in videos. Great work....I'm a fan 🤘🤘
Noooice! Nita, you fuckin' rock! How do you feel about mixing metal and other genres? Reason I ask is because that's what I do. I'd like to know your take on it. Would you consider it? Mixing hardcore electronic with metal?
Totally agree, ya know if you don't have access to live drums then programmable is great.I think when so many ppl are using it that real "clicky" sound gets old. .lol now everybody can be as fast as Fear Factorys drummer.😜
My goodness.. Nita, Nita, Nita. You not only play on guitar strings, but my heart strings as well. That's a woman that I could marry. Where do I mail my ring finger? Lol
I use ezdrummer and such because I can't play drums for shit lol but saying that when you've got a budget of a shoe string then programmed drums are a life saver especially if you get them mixed properly ^^
I also do all my own recording & I play all instruments. I'm not knocking canned drums (especially Nita's, because I've heard some examples of her drum programs and they are abso-fackin-LOOTELY baddeth to the _asseth!_ ). I just don't like my canned programmed drums, or anyone else's except for Nita's. So when I started doing this DIY recording trip, I initially used an old Boss Dr Rhythm 550, but I played all the drums live using the pads. Ultimately, I still wanted actual drums being played with actual sticks and actual kick/hi hat pedals..... ....so I went to eBay and got an Alesis E drum kit that had some very organic sounding kit models on it. You gonna laugh, but what I did was, as soon as I got that kit, I put on an as-yet- drumless song I was working on....& roughly 12 hours later I had a drum track that sounded like live drums because the drums _were freaken live!_ 😹🤣😅😂🥲💥 It's total ignorance combined with sheer willpower that enabled me to teach myself drums by playing drums on my tracks! The important thing is, it maintained that live feel that I insist upon even for my studio recordings.
i know this comment is a bit outdated, two question that can be killed with one stone ....... have you two thought about collaborating together ona album and use Glen to record it or has glen thought about bring you lady`s in on a project for a song or two ?
Dude I agree, programed drums is a kick ass tool for song writing. But for the final recording nothing beats the real thing, specially when you make a mistake on the drums and you decide to leave that in because it just makes the mix sound much better. Programmed drums can never compete in that sense, that is why most bands need to BRING BACK THE FUCKING DRUMMER.
What's so specific about the mini Behringer, or Mackie summing mixer for guitar recording? I'd think this could be done with any mixer and I'm curious why add such a mini mixer, while the main mixer is probably as good, if not better, depending on the main mixer you have, of course. So, what do those mini mixers do that, for example, my A&H GS3000 wont do?
Another problem with programing drums is that if you re not a drummer you don't think like a drummer, I m programing the drums my self in the demos but I do it from the guitarist perspective then my drummer comes in and takes it to a whole other level
I purely only use software drums because I'm a solo instrumentalist but I literally have no room in my apartment for a drum kit, nor do I know any professional drummers nearby that I could pay a decent amount to record over the tracks I do. ....Well I do know ONE drummer but he can't count to 4 and only knows one beat, is that justified? hahaha 🤣
Fuck you Glen 💜 What do you think about active single coil pick-ups? I heard that they hold that spanky thin sound just like any single coil, but they're noice less...so, is it possible to have all the pros without the cons? (Plus, Steve Lukather and David Gilmour uses them). Greetings from Argentina
I have a question for Nita. How did you go about recording Vdrums with real cymbals? Was it just the midi drums + overheads? What about the sticks hitting the pads sounds?
I have EZDrummer and love it, but to be honest some of the new drum kits that come with Ableton Live 10 are even better sounding than the EZDrummer stuff. That being said, I'd rather have a real drummer any day!
i'm in a sort of "long distance" band (we're primarily progressive rock) with 3 members in other US states, (including me) and a member in australia, and i have to act as the producer, synth programmer, keyboardist, drum programmer (there isn't a drummer between the 4 of us, somehow) AND, on top of all this... the bassist. please save me...
I loved watching jen's facial expressions as Nita described her recording process! Bwahahahah! fucking priceless. everybody in this video is so cool, but watching GlennJen react (especially Jen- who's reactions i'm not as used to) to Nita's direct-in, and kemper "reamping" is fucking amazing. Jen's totally got that 'oh honey...' look on her face, and i'm pretty sure i saw a classic spock raised eyebrow! That is way cool that Nita plays drums though- major props for that, and she has the good sense to bang a really good drummer. (hey, if you find a good drummer you gotta keep em!- take notes Glen, that's how you get Cam around more often)! As a huge in Flames fan, i loved that Nita hummed (or musically mimed) "deet, deet, deet, deet, deet, deet, deet... womp, wha, womp" and i knew exactly what she was doing! YEEEEEEESSSSSSS! (but, i gotta fan-boy nitpick here- that is from Cloud Connected off of Reroute to Remain- glen was talking about the more classic Clayman album tone-hehe). spend some quality time... still pretty awesome though. admittedly, i'd be hard pressed to hum something from Clayman on the spot too. but she took a swing anyway. Slow Clap. Slow Clap. As always it is really cool listening to glen retell the discovery of proper fredman technique. who doesn't love the re-retelling of old Dimebag/Ulrich studio stories? Magical. Great video! Can't thank Glen and the Gals enough for making it! love the guitars ladies. i don't generally like ibanez's but those are both really, really nice. i would want to play those in a store. seriously watched this three times! needed some professional levity.
Look at those 3 hot chicks
My favourite is the middle one - way better hair than the others
And look at those curves ;)
Thicc middle gril
ok ok.... I will take one for the team....i will take the other two...i wish:) those girls(the two outside one's) are amazing honestly
Glenn is the hottest chick in Wisconsin! Or is it Ohio?

Bookended by guitar goddesses!! Great vid!
Holy crap you got Hurricane Nita on the show? God damn, nice! Love her new Ibby signature model.

Beautiful Nita
So, Evenessence is still a thing?
Yeah, apparently.
I know we didn't believe it either
They came back and they’re bringing the fire.

Jared Cook Where do you live where no one is going to live shows?
Michael Herd anywhere USA. Yoy must be young. There used to be live music everywhere. It's not the same.
Jen and Nita should totally do an EP together or something.

"seem like"
Thirdly, Nita is insanely attractive which = views
because shes pretty
That went well.

Can't decide which of the 3 has the best legs?
I like the real thing. Computer drums can't throw a drum stick at you when your guitar solo time is over and you "forget".
If don’t have a drummer , programming drums on a record is the only way to go or there is something I’m missing?
Glenn, ezmix odin preset is a life saver
The song that's played at the end, I really like it, how or where can I find the full version? I assume it's a 4-6 minute song, I like it.

Get distracted for 5 seconds and hear Jen Majura say "I wanna hear him sweat" and had to listen again.
Was it a hard time to keep it together?
Nice! I had an Atari800 that I used. The sounds were kinda comical, but served the purpose. \m/
awesome
Question for Nita Strauss: does Ibanez sell that S-Series' guitar neck separately? Asking for a friend... ;P
I record my own real drums and have been doing so for my entire life
A rose between thorns.
3:20 for those that are interested in the question posed in the title of the video
Totally agree, ya know if you don't have access to live drums then programmable is great.I think when so many ppl are using it that real "clicky" sound gets old. .lol now everybody can be as fast as Fear Factorys drummer.😜
That drummer from Fear Factory has more than 2 arms and 2 legs🤣🤣Dude's a beastly absolute unit on drums.
@@skyhorseprice6591 lol nailed it on the head,Man!!! Seen them twice and between the drumming and Dino's quick picking is crazy to see live!!!
My goodness.. Nita, Nita, Nita. You not only play on guitar strings, but my heart strings as well. That's a woman that I could marry. Where do I mail my ring finger? Lol
Damn Nita is hot, and amazing guitarist. Nice job Glenn, 3some
I've got a question: would either of you be averse to using the PUSSYMELTER preset on the TC electronics flashback pedal?
Bad form!!!!!
@@ummmokay6246 lol
Superior Drummer is the shit. I'm a drummer who triggers it with a Roland kit though, and it's a much different sound from written in midi notes.
I use ezdrummer and such because I can't play drums for shit lol but saying that when you've got a budget of a shoe string then programmed drums are a life saver especially if you get them mixed properly ^^
I also do all my own recording & I play all instruments. I'm not knocking canned drums (especially Nita's, because I've heard some examples of her drum programs and they are abso-fackin-LOOTELY baddeth to the
_asseth!_ ).
You gonna laugh, but what I did was, as soon as I got that kit, I put on an as-yet- drumless song I was working on....& roughly 12 hours later I had a drum track that sounded like live drums because the drums _were freaken live!_ 😹🤣😅😂🥲💥
It's total ignorance combined with sheer willpower that enabled me to teach myself drums by playing drums on my tracks!
Any mixer will work. The point is you don't have to spend a fortune.
What is your opinion on Blut aus Nord ?
Another problem with programing drums is that if you re not a drummer you don't think like a drummer, I m programing the drums my self in the demos but I do it from the guitarist perspective then my drummer comes in and takes it to a whole other level
Ok, so Nita uses an Apollo Twin, but what does Jen use? I literally did not hear her say so.
I use programmed drums when I write or jam by myself, but I wouldn’t use it on a track unless it served the song or genre in some way.
As a fellow former C64 user, I gots to know what you used as your music program. I used to use Compute! Magazine's SID Player.
Funky drummer to start. The second one had a yellow screen, that's all I remember
Every time I see Nita Strauss I wish I still had my S series from Ibanez
I purely only use software drums because I'm a solo instrumentalist but I literally have no room in my apartment for a drum kit, nor do I know any professional drummers nearby that I could pay a decent amount to record over the tracks I do.
....Well I do know ONE drummer but he can't count to 4 and only knows one beat, is that justified? hahaha 🤣
More attention to Jen please! XD
You know how need a really feels about program drums.... Much better to date an actual drummer than a drum machine....
Fuck you Glen 💜
What do you think about active single coil pick-ups?
I heard that they hold that spanky thin sound just like any single coil, but they're noice less...so, is it possible to have all the pros without the cons? (Plus, Steve Lukather and David Gilmour uses them).
Greetings from Argentina
Vic20!
With the tape player lol can't forget about that.
I have a question for Nita.
How did you go about recording Vdrums with real cymbals? Was it just the midi drums + overheads? What about the sticks hitting the pads sounds?
Here's a question for the Ladies Axe Fx vs Kemper vs Helix You gotta pick only one to use if you had to.......and fight!
Good question. I'd like to know also
Vintage 30's? Completely unexpected.
How did it smell in the room?! legit question
Ev Sp like sunshine and happiness probably.
Nita Strauss Wrestlemania 34 best thing ever
What is her (Nita) band besides the Iron Maiden tribute, Alice Cooper or solo?
I am curious.
She has been working on a solo project.
Commodore 64 drums are awesome in a chiptune context. ;p
Curious how it turned out, anything I can listen to?
@@NoJobRob nothing really came of it, sadly!
Hey Glann, kudos on the great guitar players.
Glad you ditched that Henning something, can't recall his last name.
That feeling when Glenn has longer hair than Jen and Nita.
