I appreciated this interview quite a bit! I read an interview with Dan in Modern Drummer way back and it was the first time I had heard a 'jazzer' cite Meshuggah's Chaosphere as being important for them --- and that really set my brain off on making other connections. Quick thought: About your language metaphor - another way of thinking about it would be "are you translating directly from another language or are you learning the idiomatic tendencies of the new one" This is where listening is super important so you can learn how speakers actually deploy phrases and words and how the flow of conversation or presentation actually happens. Then you develop your own articulation of it just like any native (and non-native) speaker has their dialectic/idiolect
Great interview. Nice to know there's at least one other person who loves Frankie Dunlop as much as I do. For that matter I think I learned about him from John Riley's book XD
Dan is an absolute BEAST, saw him live for the first time back in 2011 and been a fan ever since.
Thank you for this. Getting a closer glimpse into Dan’s mind was a real treat for me.
Thank you for doing these interviews!

Loved this, it would be great to see you get Dave King on!
Excellent interview! Thank you guys so much.
Hell yes. This is the one I was waiting for.
Great session! A lot of really great concepts. You should do Craig Reynolds. Now that’s an interview
Tell him ;)
Gracias
