The Brussels Effect: The Rise of a Regulatory Superstate in Europe with Anu Bradford

Anu Bradford, assistant professor at the University of Chicago, discusses "the Brussels Effect," which highlights an underestimated aspect of European power the discussion on globalization and power politics overlooks: Europe's unilateral power to regulate global commerce.
It is common today to hear Europe described today as the power of the past whose military, economic, and political powers are declining. Bradford, however, argues that Europe is successfully exporting its legal institutions and standards and examines why the markets, other states, and international institutions can do little to constrain Europe's global regulatory agenda.

it was the same effect with the DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm). The Standardized technical criteria for every produced item - now it is DIN-ISO or EN (European Norms). Started in Germany 1917 in wartime to standardize Weapon Production.......

@@billv7356 Ahhhh... The EU isn't doing too well... (which country does right now?) and is about to collapse anytime soon now! I've heard this song for decades, especially from right-wing populists (see the Breaking Point' poster from the Brexit campaign).
Oh, just by the way, thanks to the single market, there is no more 'red tape' for members. That was the whole purpose of the single market, you are welcome to ask the British about it!

In your dreams it is but in reality, the EU and it's members are getting stronger, especially with the UK leaving which have been the main ones that held it back, beside, what the EU is doing is a good thing, it's actually raising the standard on a global level which we all stand to benefit from that, also, it doesn't actually matter who does this weather it's the EU, US or China as long as it improves the standards for us all and like they pointed out, businesses will always likely go with the highest standard so that they can trade all over the world without any real problems.

Not according the EU members. And, in the end, it's only their word that counts. Not that of the UK. The UK has always been against an united Europe and even now it hopes that the EU would collapse to make out of the remains something that better suits its needs (like the UK always done), but it can't do a thing to make its dreams come through. After all, the UK is just a small island without any power to force the EU in any way.

@@imperialguardsman521 A North American Union would be dominated by the U.S. (which would suck for Canada and Mexico), and make it even easier to bring all sorts of jobs into Mexico. I see almost no benefits that you'd get from something like NAFTA, while the EU is more obviously positive for its members.
