    The wax one you show is similar to the Mann Lake box but the ventilation holes are ringed by perforations so they can be removed and replaced with #8 hardware cloth. It also recommends that it be stapled together using a special stapler.

    We use the wax ones and have to tape the corners on almost every one before letting it go. It's never fun to get a call from a customer who is standing on the side of the highway because they made it halfway home from your place and their car is full of bees. LOL

      The old saying is true..."No news is good news"! Next year I will buy the better vented style in waxed now that I know it's an option www.mdasplitter.com/nuc_boxes.php.

      Jason, I purchase wax one with frame rest like your brown there from Brushy Mountain Bee supply. They have that ventilated style with frame rest and free shipping with orders of $100-$150.

    I used a wax coated box ONCE (lol) to transport a cutout home. Oh boy was that a big surprise on the ride home and when I finally opened up the trunk. Bees were crawling up by rear window on the ride home. I knew when I opened up the truck i would see some bees but I think they ALL came out. The trunk was covered in them. This was at night too. It was a nightmare vacuuming all the bees at night! I still had bees the next day in the care on the way to work. lol fun fun. lol Good video. I would secure all the edges, corners well before transporting.

    JC your videos are really very informative. I don't know what you do or did in your past but you definitely are a teacher/instructor at heart. I just watched your queen piping noise video from back on April 2017 also. Your video is great for me as a wanna be bee keeper. Thanks and blessings on you and family.

      So glad to hear you enjoy the video and thanks for the kind words. In school I studied engineering drafting and we had to write assembly instructions for different items. I guess that shaped my teaching style.
      When are you hoping to get bees?

      I am uncertain. I am hesitant for a few reasons. I live in Athens Alabama near Huntsville. I am in a subdivision which was created in the middle of corn, cotton, and wheat fields. I have a 1 acre yard with neighbors on three sides of my backyard and one has a pool. I don't want to disturb their lifestyles with my bees. One has many fruit trees and roses, he is a master gardener so he would benefit. Another neighbor has a pool and I can see bees going over there to drink. Although there is a pond and creek on the other side as well. Then another neighbor just started a family and has small kids with a swing set out back. So I'm unsure how having bees will effect these neighbors, but I constantly watch TH-cam beekeeping videos to learn and mostly relax. My grandpa grew all sorts of fruits and veggies so nature is a part of my makeup. What do you think bout the effects on my neighbors?

    Go to wal mart and get you some of the mesh cinch string laundry bags to put the nucs in. They only cost a few dollars each, and it contains the bees just in case the customer should have to slam on the brakes or worse yet have an accident. Two bucks is well worth the piece of mind and most will gladly agree and pay it. I've been using them for years. That 2nd box has exellent fitment, shame it's not coated like the Mann Lake box.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome tip with the laundry bags. I will look into them. As far as the non wax coated nuc it can be purchased with wax www.mdasplitter.com/nuc_boxes.php . Thanks to my great followers we now know where to get them.

    Brushy Mountain sells a nuc box identical to the brown box with all the benefits you like, but it is a white waxed box. I carry one as a swarm catching box.

      Most of the stuff I order is from Mann Lake simply because they offer free shipping over $100. Plus they always have everything I need. If you go you should make a video.

      I just learned of the place a few weeks ago! I've been looking at their site and yes they seem really reasonable with their pricing. I don't have a lot of funds to be buying more hives and parts and pieces this year, but if I go next year I'll for sure make a video!!

    Brushy mountain sells a waxed somewhat similar to a mix of them both heavily waxed with frame holders not sure if it has the upper venalation

  • @charlesthomas5737
    @charlesthomas5737 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    the white Mann Lake box you will find that the frames will not stay on the the frame rest because the box is made about one inch to long, and the brown box if you want it to be waxed you have to buy it from Brushy Mountain bee supply. I found the brown box worked great holding the frames in place, but after you get all five frames in the box it is really tight. I was afraid that the customer would roll the Queen getting the frames out to the box, and last of all for both boxes if you want to keep them together you have to staple them using a Riteway Stapler that uses 1/2 inch staples, from Mann lake the cost $60.00 for the stapler and a box of staples.

    I just set up a beehive kit from tractor supply. I'd rather catch a swarm than purchase nucs for $150. Can I use a cardboard box to attract a swarm to transant to my hive? Or a plastic tote?

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can use a box or a tote. Mann Lake sells wax coated cardboard nuc that handle rain pretty well. I should point out though that a brand new box doesn't have the scent needed to attract a swarm. When bees live in a hive there is numerous pheromone added to the box not to mention the smell of beeswax and propolis (bee glue). You'd have better luck catching a swarm with a old hive box.

    Will a frame feeder fit in the frame fingers of the brown nuc? Or would a person need to remove a finger divider for a feeder to fit?

    I bought a nuc this year that came with a EZ NuC box. There was no inner cover and when I got home with it , some of the bees came out of it without open the box cover. The lid only had 1 piece of tape to hold the cover shut......no wonder some of the bees came out.
    When I opened the cover a ton of water was in there also, must have been sitting outside in the rain. You should had seen the water fall when I dumped the rest of the bees from the nuc into my deep 10 frame hive.
    I ended up of not having a queen in my nuc, which I found out 2 weeks later after all the brood was emerged and no eggs or larvae nor covered brood was left in the cells . No queen after searching for it for 3 times.
    I am now 1 1/2 month behind the schedule of making enough bees and honey to get them through the winter........I hate those boxes, I rather have the wooden ones.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry to hear this but it sounds like you know who to avoid buying from again. Suppliers like that leave a bad taste in your month. I think I would have demanded a refund or replacement. Best of luck getting them back on track.

    • @FloryJohann
      @FloryJohann 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I called the supplier and I dealed with them 2 years in a row now, but no.
      And you are right this was my last time with them.
      I took things into my own hands and just ordered a queen from someone else located in Albemarle N.C. and they are trustworthy. The heck they send a new queen out before they had the money.
      Jason, I like your videos and you are a gentlemen.
      And you are right if something happen like that, that it leaves a bad taste.
      Thank you.

    Jason are you keeping the cardboard boxes with frame and live bees in the shed or barn or car cover until you sell them ?
    Or are you just transferring frames to the cardboard boxes the day before the sale?
    Just wondering.

    • @JCsBees
      @JCsBees  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I transfer the day before pickup. That seems to work well for me. Then that frees up my wooden nucs for summer splits to overwinter.
