Jesse and I moved to Idaho to start our homestead a year and a half ago and I have to confess… I don’t actually enjoy the day-to-day life of homesteading. Not the homesteading most people think about… the homesteading that nobody talks about which is what building a house from scratch looks like. However, I continue to do these things anyways. Why? I am retired (on disability) and so I have more time than most. I spend some of that time watching TH-cam videos more than broadcast TV (and NO CABLE!) I have really enjoyed your videos and tracking your progress. It is a shame that others are trying to tell you how you should be doing what you are doing and how your way is all wrong! If they are so right and know so much, why aren't they doing it themselves? I love your honesty (both of you) and am cheering you on. If I was 20 years younger (and had a willing partner), I might give this a shot, too! Live YOUR dream!
A willing partner is the most difficult part of this. This Lady is awesome and not many would be willing to work this hard. Most of the woman I know say this is a mans job but if he said house work is womans work he would be called all kinds of names. They work together side by side and will get a lot done this way. The only thing I would add is that in the old time people would have the community get together to help each other out. It will go faster if you can get your local community to do a barn raising activity.
Thats not homesteading, its called construction....

I'm restoring an old house myself. Learning how to use plaster, wire electrical, make wooden parts, restore old sash. It is a way to my goal. I am with you100%, sister. Stay strong, stay calm, keep the focus. That's how I am surviving it, 7 1/2 years in, 3 to go.

You guys should be very proud of the steps you have already taken to get to where you are. The skills you have learned, and will learn, prove a strong person with goals can accomplish anything! You both inspire many, daily.....keep up the good work. I wish I would've done something like this when I was healthier and could've moved to the wilderness. Now my wilderness is long weekend camping trips, but I'll settle for that, I'm thankful to be above ground! So, keep teaching and learning, and I'll keep watching and learning with you both.
We bought acreage outside of Seattle (Poulsbo, WA) . After living in SoCal for most of my life, we couldn't see raising our kids there. While we are not homesteading, we are "roughing it" relative to what we had before and loving every minute with our kids.
Our 3 and 10 year old love it too. Instead of asking for material things and video games, the 10 year old wants to build and explore. That says it all.
You two are such and inspiration and I cant wait to see what youre homestead looks like when youre done!

Homesteading sounds like good preparation for life. We homesteaded with four children, the youngest one year old. Two more during the long process. Best time of our lives.
This might just be my favourite "off-the-grid" video ever! I've been binging on your channel again today and stumbled across this wee gem. Alyssa, I'm so inspired by your attitude and ability to just get in their and get the work done. Great, really down to earth video. I've just discovered your channel, and one of the things I really like is how honest you guys are about when it's really hard work, when it's too much work, when it goes wrong and how it can go wrong. For anyone planning something like this, big dreams and inspiration aren't the problem. But realistic expectations and realistic preparation are what keep you from giving up when the going gets tough, and really make those dreams come true.

I think that far from detracting from your femininity, all of the experiences from the projects that are broadening your skills, growing your confidence and continue to help forge you into a more valuable human being, life partner and responsibility bearer on the homestead have enhanced your femininity, too !
Wow this video made me cry a little at the end. We share the same dream, and I can't explain how much more excited I am to put some plans into action. I just had a life saving kidney transplant 3 weeks ago and let's just say getting a second chance at life really makes you want to do everything you were afraid to do before and every day is truly a gift. Thank you so much for posting this. My boyfriend and I are actually trying to save money to buy a big piece of land somewhere in Ohio or western PA. This growing season is my second time gardening and I'm learning how to make things like homemade pickles, sour cream, just things people usually buy at the store. I just think if you guys can do it, we can too. Peace and Love!!

You two are doing something so special these days and that is to sacrifice and work toward your dream.
Either one of you are able to give up and live an easier life, you were doing it before this but you're sticking it out. That says so much about the strength you two have as partners! I have seen this in the two of you since I started I watching.
Far too many people are afraid of work, it's like it has become a 4 letter word. If the work for someone willing to give them a paycheck they will do it but if they do the same thing for themselves with just the satisfaction of not having to pay someone to do it they back away, I am proud to see that you 2 are willing to get your hands dirty and break a sweat to reach your goals.
I so commend you both for taking that first unfamiliar leap into your dream . I did the same twenty-some years ago, on an island in the Florida Keys. I started my planing twenty years before that. I moved a tiny trailer on my property and took 3 years to build the beach house.
The stories to tell, would fill volumes.
I know of that feeling you both have while building a dream There is none better. Satisfaction in building your home, is priceless.

When you build things like a deck or install drywall or sheathing you shouldn't line up your joints in one row. They should be staggered evenly. It provides much greater strength and rigidity. I noticed on the decking boards you have them lined up in a row.
