I’m not new to comics but I’ve never wanted to read anything too important to the main marvel universe, but the portrayal of Reed and Sue in Rivals has had me reading 60’s fantastic four for about 2 weeks now and I can’t stop. No MCU or even marvel animation project has ever gotten me to want to learn more about these characters so much.
I think it's amazing that they focus more on making the characters feel like themselves rather than appealing to what executives tend to think the masses want. Spiderman, you'd expect him to get all the spotlight and be the easiest to play, since most people who only know the mainstream stuff probably'd wanna play as him, but no, instead he is a character who gets the same amont of attention as literally anyone else and is hard to play because you need to be just as precise as a "real" spider-person would have to be to pull off all the cool shit he does, and I love to see how they don't shy away from no part of the universe, be it mystical, grounded, sci-fi, cosmic, whatever it is, if it's cool and in the comics, it's gonna be there
Regarding the thing with Spiderman, I think that's exactly why they made Venom be in the opposite side of the difficulty spectrum. Yes, Spidey is by far the hardest heroe to do cool tricks, so it takes time for a fan to feel like they can be Spider-Man. But Venom, while being just as popular and having technically "similar" abilities, is way more forgiving for new players, with great sustain and mobility to survive almost any situation without depending on having pro healers by your side, which helps players be more independent and enjoy the game without a deep gamesense or team coordination. In a nutshell, Rivals really appeals to both the casual and more hardcore players, which ia amazing.
@@pixavier9746 It fits personality wise too, Spiderman is intelligent, skilled, clever, and a showoff, so he plays like it. Venom just wants to get in your face as fast as possible and beat you down, and his playstyle matches

As a squirrel girl comic fan since Ryan North’s run, I am SO SO appreciative for how much love and care they put into making even a silly character like Doreen so accurate to her comics. Whether it’s using Milana Vayntrub’s voice (she also was the voice of squirrel girl in a marvel podcast a while ago), or her voice lines referring to her Deadpool villain card guide, or even speaking about Monkey Joe’s passing ??? Like this is SOO much love and care that makes me so happy to play the game :) Plus the lore and stories they write for each character’s bio is so incredible
I had previously taken a bit of a "soft hiatus" from the mainstream comics for a while, and because of that I skipped out on basically the entire Krakoa era of the X-Men, only really hearing about it through news articles and the occasional YT video, but because Rivals seems to be leaning so hard into the Krakoa lore (it was even leaked that both Krakoa *and* Arrako are going to be future maps) I actually decided to start catching up by getting the first volumes of House of X & Powers of X. This kind of exposure really does work to get people to check out the original source material, even for people like me who do read comics to check out what I'd recently scene as a bygone weird era of X-Men that I'd missed on by the time I got back into dedicated reading.
Can I just say... I LOVE the art style and direction of this game. Like omg I cannot express how much I adore the look of this game. The unabashedly comic aesthetic is just everything to me. AND THE EFFECTS???? TO DIE FOR
I've been skirting around the edge of Marvel fandom for a while--I've been aware of it, played some of the games and watched some of the MCU stuff, read the beginning of a few trades--so i knew i liked the *idea* of Squirrel Girl, especially in her Unbeatable Squirrel Girl incarnation. But man she is SO charming in Marvel Rivals and is quickly becoming my favorite. I love that she got to stay a little plus-sized and her voice actor really delivered. So I've been definitely tempted to really give her comics a read through ! It's also made my algorithm on TH-cam introduce me to a ton of creators that focus on superhero comics so that's been awesome!
I really like how dettached it is from the MCU, like you said, everyone is on equal footing, this helps boost the rep of newcomers so that they can become iconic household names that will have several runs in future decades and will be reinvented instead of forgotten, like spidey and the avengers and all the other popular characters and teams, comic fans often complain about how new comic runs are always just reboots of spiderman's story or the story of some other character or whatever but like, when they are given something new to try they compare it to their classics and toss it to the side, this is how we help prevent that type of behavior Best example in the game for me of how un-MCU it is would be the treatment of IronMan by the other characters, he's not treated as some virtuous hero who sacrificed himself for the greater good... he's seen as a really smart guy with a bit of an attitude problem and an ego who sometimes has good ideas and other times... not so much, just one genius in the sea of other geniuses that exist in the Marvel Universe... Hell, in his interaction with Sue Storm he lowkey admits to her that Reed is smarter than him, in a very conceited way, but that's perfect because that's what you'd expect of his actual character in the comics
It's so fun seeing Rivals helping people know more about the lesser known characters, especially now with MCU not being the easy money maker it was, Marvel letting non-MCU characters being in the same light as something like the Avengers feels great Now more people can see how big and interesting the Marvel universe is, to street level to even cosmic level, there's something for everybody
I think people forget that the early MCU was far more willing to be comic book-like than the rest of the capeshit scene at the time. The first Thor movie was talked about as though it were candy-coated nonsense

Aa someone who hasn't been a Marvel fan in a long time now Rivals did inspire me to go have a look at some of my favourite Marvel Comics again. Spiderman, The Power Pack and Nova are all characters that I had forgotten how much I liked!
Started playing rivals, and it finally got me to read comics, reading through the X-Men and New Mutants now, and now I want to read Namor’s stuff because I started playing him and he may be a dweeb but he’s fun to play so I read more comics and now I’m sitting here hoping they add Rom the Spaceknight and Warlock (the cooler designed one) and I’m just accepting they won. They got me into comics. They got me watching marvel shows and movies again. “The Moooon haunts you!” Plays in my head every ten minutes, this game has mastered the art of making me love marvel. I used to assume the fantastic four were kinda jerks because that’s all I saw of them, and now I think the Richards are swell and I’m excited for Johnny and Ben. It’s just too good.

The fact that they are including a bunch of lesser known characters gives me hope we might actually see some of the Runaways aside from Nico Minoru be brought into the spotlight. I never got super into comics but The Runaways is by far and away my favourite superhero comic series, and as much as I love Nico I really want the others to get some love as well
I think it’s so cool that people aren’t making fun of any of the characters, but are actually respecting each one because of unique each one is to one to another. Such as, Magik being a dynamic duelist and Adam Warlock being a very useful support. The dialogue between people in lobby has shown a lot of people more characterization more than most modern adaptations. Like you said, it doesn’t belittle who they are.
I think Marvel Rivals is a perfect opportunity for Superhero adaptations and it's fun to play the game, enjoying the game and growing a new fan base with these characters are popular and not so popular, it shows have a unique chance to get these characters before jumping into the MCU (like Fantastic Four for example). As I read the Marvel Rivals Infinity Comic (jumping to print as a one shot in April 2025), those character interactions are top notch and gave us a new Team-up Abilities like Luna Snow and Jeff the Land Shark, and the skins are beautiful, inspired from the Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also original skins are tied to the game's narrative storyline that's I've been hooked. A lot of Vtubers (Virtual TH-camrs are called, Jenna Anderson), TH-cam and Twitch Streamers and fans want to jump in and play Marvel Rivals. I never played Marvel Rivals but I want to play Marvel Rivals as a longtime Marvel Fan that started my journey to Marvel Fandom for a decade. I think Marvel Rivals is a perfect jumping on point for Marvel to create more, enjoy more and play more in this new universe of Marvel Rivals. I hope gamers and Marvel Fans old and new, have opportunity to read Marvel Comics or watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the very first time, thanks to Marvel Rivals.
i’ve never been interested in comics before, but marvel rivals instantly got me hooked. i fell in love with one of the character designs- adam warlock, my beloved- and decided to read up on his lore. and then i actually started to dive into his comics and god i love my golden son so much. i’m so happy this game introduced me to him!
I haven't seen Galacta since her solo mini-series back in the early 2000s (I think), so seeing her now and voiced is a huge blast from the past for me.
I been waiting for a video like this that allows me to talk about this aspect of the game. I got into superheros with the Raimi spider-man movies and always WANTED to get into comics further because of them, but never could because I thought I needed to buy them from a comic store, where none was around. So I loved comic book related youtube channels growing up. Now that I am older I have rectified this childhood hinderance and read plenty of them. I feel pretty much every character was adapted near perfectly, with only two nitpicks, that being the antiheros Punisher and Moon Knight. Moon Knight often voices how his alternate personalities are feeling as he does certain things in the game, and while that's not at all a bad thing, it can feel a tiny bit gimmicky for a real life mental illness that real people struggle with. This version of him did manage to find some equilibrium with his alters though but not yet with Khonshu, the God that he serves. And Punisher feels too much like this game's "bad boy". From flirting with Black Widow in his lore to outright threatening characters like the Invisible Woman. I don't feel this is accurate to who he is, he isn't flirty or outwardly hostile to anyone that isn't a villain or criminal. In this game he WAS given the Super soldier serum that extends his life span so maybe THAT made him the way he is as it can enhance aspects of your personality in lore, but it still just feels wrong. What this game does, that also Marvel vs Capcom did before, was introduce me to new characters. I never hard of Luna Snow before this game and from what I hear there will be more "unheard" of characters which I am even more excited about than the A-listers!
I also feel the spaces where modern avengers fans and modern x-men fans can enjoy the SAME piece of media at the same time has been minimal. Deadpool v wolverine being the most recent example. But this game having , psylock, namor, wolverine, magneto, wanda, and then to have guardians of the galaxy, avengers, spidey verse. its so nice to see the bigger scale of the comics actually grasped vs just focusing on a small section of it.
I am so appreciative of the fact that Marvel Rivals introduced me to Magik & that coincidentally, I became obsessed with Magik right before her first issue of her new solo series got released! The timeline of events was me looking at Magik and I thought she was hot and badass, then I played her a lot and her gameplay was perfect for me, and then I started looking more into her history and character story within the game and outside of the game - and here I am now with so much knowledge of her backstory and the stories she has been a part of all the way from her introduction to as recently as seeing her in the new Ultimate universe (okay she may be in her evil era but she looks damn good being evil) and of course Magik #1. My obsession is so bad my in game name for Marvel Rivals is “Lesbian Magik” because I am so obsessed with Illyana that I have transcended canonicity and have chosen to believe that Illyana and Kitty are true and real girlfriends and they kiss and muah muah… and also because I can only play Magik😭
I've been reading through everything related to cloak and dagger, characters I barely even recognized as existing before this game, and it's been a great time

Great video, i used to read DC and Marvel comics heavily for about 2-4 years but there's a lack of progression that'd i like for most of these superhero stories and came to realize im probably not gonna get that with these two brands (unfortunately), but thats fine. That's kind of why i like the MCU since they kind of have no choice but to move on with adapting these heroes to the mains screen. I think the MCU has done what they can and have made a really cool universe that we probably wouldn't think would be possible if someone told me this years ago. Rivals has been a treat to see alot of the comic aspects of these characters being thrown to people who only know one version of them, it's been real awesome. I would love the MCU to lean in just a bit more into taking stuff from the comics (mainly costumes, i like flashy lol).
The two best choices they ever could've made with Rivals right at the start of the game is not only linking to other comics with the skins they sell, which gets folks interested in reading specific books so they can see the source material, but by putting the Fantastic Four, the characters that saved Marvel Comics in the 60s, in the very first full season of the game while attention is at an all time high. F4 have been so poorly handled in non-comic mediums that it makes me so happy to finally see these guys all get their due. Rivals has finally convinced me to dip into reading every 616 Marvel comic, starting from the 60s and going onward, and I am loving it so much. I also started reading Demon Days, which is where Rivals Psylocke originates from. Peach Momoko's artstyle is so pretty!

It still drives me nuts how WB has completely squandered DCs potential. Even when they owned Marvel in the Market of video games, they were still so fucking short sighted. Its just benn Batman Batman Batman Batman. They dont even fully work with DCUO . Ive been screaming for years for them to go head on with video games while they control the medium. They just let Superman sit on the shelf and collect dust when people have been begging for a Superman game for 20 years. Audience have wanted numerous projects, but just like Marvel and Disney, they are lazy af and once they find a winner, they never think of ways to be more creative. People are complaining about it even now and they are still talking about Batman games.

If people let wonder woman fail too then be prepare for more batman for the next decade. That's just what the business is. If you don't make money, if you don't draw you can enjoy the catering. Same goes for the DC movies as well. People only ever watch batmans stuff. Why would you as a studio throw money into something knowing full well that it'll fail more likely than not?
@TheApexLion1234 For the longest time Marvel was only doing Marvel vs Capcom. That's the era when dc was king in video games but even then, DC had so much more opportunity to be more. Marvel didn't care about games at that time

So Im 40 and Rivals has been a breath of fresh air and it's definitely got me back into reading comics! Just playing the game had awakened all my X-men and Fantastic Four knowledge that had laid dormant since my childhood lol When I stream the game I've become an encyclopedia of old knowledge. Everyone is familiar with MCU lore but X-men and Fantastic Four have been shoved to the side for so long that the mainstream audience isn't as familiar. Now Im picking up books that ive missed over the past 15 years. Just started the Krokoa arc last week!
This game has the same vibes as Lego marvel superheroes in terms of how authentic it feels. Like everyone feels exactly how you would expect based on who they are. And man it feels great to have the xmen and fantastic 4 back in the spotlight ever since the avengers took the stage

Marvel Heroes the Aarpg had squirrel girl based on the 80s comics and she was the best summoned in the game with hordes of squirrels doing the damage for her.
Hope you can get some time in with the game itself! I love that there are extensive wall of text lore & story for each character, and that you unlock mini story comics with each section of a season.
I'm currently waiting for Demon Days to arrive in the mail after going down a rabbit hole investigating Psylocke's new design and Peach Momoko's art. Since I was already shopping, I threw in a fun looking Luke Cage comic at the same time. I haven't bought a superhero comic in about 8 or 10 years, but this was a great catalyst! The vibrancy and passion behind Marvel Rivals really allowed me to feel that pull again. You explained this whole phenomenon wonderfully, and it's nice to affirm how widespread it all is!
One of my favorite parts of Rivals is definitely the character variety. Throwing lesser known characters into the ring with household names takes me back to the pre-MCU era of Marvel content; for a while there, it felt like games and TV shows were relegated to _just_ using the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man.
Interesting video. I am a manga-videogames enthusiast and always kinda looked down on western nerdom, specially MCU movies. This game soemhow got me watching a few of them (guardians mostly) and even reading comics! Im reading the 60s uncanny x-men from the start, and the ongoing all-new venom one. Its interesting, I dont know why this game of all comic related media is what finally got me into trying it.
I can speak on the game mechanics: they are really, really good. I also like the fact that while the characters in the game are canonically alternates, who are different from their portrayal in the comics, they still feel like the characters. I can absolutely see Psylocke as a medieval Japanese warrior who hunts demons. Or T'Challa as a guy who decides to take humanity to the stars using Wakandan superscience. I freaking love this game.
It's definitely working. I've never had any interest in the comics but tried to start reading them because of how much I was enjoying Rivals. Sad to say I've already given up because marvel unlimited seemed like the friendliest way to start, but the ux and searchability was so awful that I've already cancelled 😅 but hey it's still probably more than the mcu can claim.
It's weird, because I have the complete opposite take. Marvel Rivals works because it roots itself in concepts introduced in the Live Action movies, then it branches back into the comics with their ascetics and history. The only ones who have yet to make a live action appearance are Jeff, Luna, Squirrel Girl, Penni (Who I feel was represented in Spider-verse) and technically this Iron Fist and Psylocke.
@@littlewinston8141 I think they're referring to the version of Psylocke we have in rivals. Sai from Demon Days, which, like Lin Lie's inclusion, seems like a way to sort of... distance themselves from some of the baggage those two characters have had
One thing I really liked about the MCU was that it cleaned up a lot of the comics lore (i.e. retcons and unnecessarily complicated backstories) a lot like how Batman The Animated Series did, and Rivals also followed a similar fashion of sticking with the basics of these characters and what makes them interesting!
This game owes overwatch a lot but their art direction took this to the next level The avengers game looked too realistic, whereas this looks incredible from every angle because of its style
I think what Rivals proves is you don't need to explain origin stories to have people attached to a character. The MCU has rarely tried to simply assume a main character has always existed in the world (you know, like the real world works) and they are instead forced to think about origin stories and introductions every time they want to show a new character. Thanos was one of the notable exceptions and his success is just the exception that proves the rule. Spiderverse was also very good at that, with characters that simply EXIST and then we get to meet them without needing to develop them that much. The Marvel universe is filled with super people everywhere, just use them. Like imagine if people kept talking about the Xmen or mutants and then they happened to appear, instead of needing to figure out how to introduce them in the MCU during the Xmen movie (I know this is because they didn't own them before but I think you get the example). Edit: I'm mostly referring to unknown characters. Spiderman was introduced without an origin because it was pretty easy, you don't need to explain what spiderman is about. But I think you could make a movie where, idk, Magik or Cloak and Dagger suddenly appear and you don't need to explain what they're about or anything, but simply use them because they are cool and interesting characters just like that.

I'm an avid gamer but I don't much care for shooters. Still. I love how happy this game is making people. Also glad Marvel vs Capcom Collection put those games on modern hardware. Mvc2 is finally out of jail!
I dont fully believe this is because of rivals becauae I think her popularity has been on the up for a few years but when I went to pick up magik #1 my comic book store was almost sold out and they told me marvel didnt send enough for how popular the character is now seems kinda crazy a lesser known x-man can be underestimated now
IMHO, Marvel Avengers Alliance (MAA) is still THE game that got the adaptions right. The characters, abilities, encounters, missions, story there are ACTUALLY comic-accurate, a lot more than Rivals (which is a very liberal adaption). That was the game that got me into comics. I miss it.
The honor of “Best Marvel Game” still belongs to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but Rivals is definitely up there so far. Now, if only they could add gyro aiming for PS5 & PC.
omg unrelated but i never watch comics youtubers bc usually the ones that pop up on my feed are men talking abt the plot beats of a particular character's history, which just doesn't rlly interest me bc it generally ignores comics as a story and narrative and how it makes u feel and allat and those vids don't make u wanna actually engage and read the comics. and like honestly as a nerdy girl i've been fighting for my life tl;dr im just happy to have a girl talking abt comics with cute pink hearts on the thumbnail in my feed 😭
Ive been reading the comics already since Thanksgiving 2024 but it did encourage me to check out the Marvel Rivals comic to get context for the battles. I actually like how good of a job they're doing with it and it helped me feel incentivized enough to collect and read the lore pages for sesson 1 when in season 0 I was just annoyed I worked by butt off to get part of a comic book but instead all I got was text on a screen. But I really want to see them defeat Dracula even if I never see them beat the Dooms because that will likely be drawn out for years.
Before marvel rivals I could not tell the difference between DC and Marvel. I was the one lame freind in the group asking if Batman was going to be added. Or why x-men mutants were in the game cuz marvels is the Avengers not X-men (I didn’t know they were). I think, despite being generally into nerd culture, super heroes and comics never resonated with me the way it did for my friends. I found the MCU to be annoying and over exposed. My dad and brother made me watch guardians of the galaxy and I thought star lord was the most annoying character in the universe and was genuinely rooting for the villain to kill him. Marvel Rivals did make me more curious tho. Outside of being a fun experience to play, I found myself wondering what the hell all these characters were talking about. How does magic powers exist along side mutants, existing along side super technology and science. I didn’t know characters like Namor, Luna Snow, or Peni Parker even existed. I never knew about some connections between characters too. Like Magneto being Scarlet Witches father. Am I a fan of marvel all of a sudden. No. Not really. But it did make me wonder if black widow has so little going on super power wise that they gave her a sniper rifle and a dash cuz what’s all she had going for her in the movies. So I guess it got me to read a wiki page about her. The game did make me appreciate the comics more tho. I realized that Marvel has been around for a long time, and judging the whole of the brand off only just the MCU might be unfair of me to do so. It made me appreciate the story tellers and artists who came up with these ideas and put pen to paper to make something special. And now I really like black widow. I wanna know why she’s always talking about the red room. What that is. Why is she so old and always talking about it (and also like seriously could they not think of any other ability to give her in game the wiki listed like 30 weapons and skills she’s used over the whole existence of the character). It just has me curious about the cast. Except for Star Lord. He is still insufferably annoying to me.
only bad thing about this game is the players.. squirrel girls portrayal would be so good to me (shes my favorite superhero) if not for the sexualizing of her by the fans when it calls her a teenager in her bio this is an issue with marvel and overwatch fans too, so i guess it makes sense
@ my bad i was thinking of the peni bio (another character frequently sexualized by the community), but shes still usually a teenager in the comics, more often than she is 20 (from my experience). in “the coming of squirrel girl” her origin comic shes “fifteen. well, fifteen next july actually” and in all the other squirrel girl media ive consumed she either stays “fifteen next july” or is unspecified. my bad for not putting enough research into my first comment, i was just tired of seeing people sexualize her (and a bunch of other female characters on the roster)
@@oootoocool1 Eh if your bothered so much I don't know why you just don't avoid it. They're fictional characters and honestly it doesn't really matter at all. Teenager technically can still mean 18 or 19. Plus just because Squirrel girl is represented as one age more doesn't mean this version is meant to be. I honestly see no problem with it at all, so just recommend you avoid those areas of the Community. It ain't a big deal. Edit: Plus due to laws in some places games can't have minors who are Killable. So likely if asked they would say Peni is 18 for that reason. Plus to me she looks older than any comic appearance. Squirrel girl clearly looks 20 to me personally. All other characters look like adults as well. Only true debate is Peni and is completely fair to be uncomfortable with. The rest though are clearly 100% adults.
I know he's popular and has already been datamined but I hope Deadpool makes an appearance. He's been in a lot of video games already but I'd love to hear his brand of self-aware humor in a hero shooter
I honestly think most people praising it just enjoy the animesque designs and the bubble butts. While I appreciate the latter I find nothing "right" or "special" about Marvel Rivals. I doubt it, Marvel Rivals has hundreds of thousands of players for a reason, a game like that doesn’t just die after a few months, besides we are getting two characters every season. THAT Is what Marvel Rivals simply does better. They have committed themselves to give us more (and better) content than Overwatch could ever hope!

This is such a bad take that it doesn’t even feel genuine. If all you got from this game was “cartoons” and “nice butts” then I wholeheartedly recommend you try the game out for yourself and if you somehow already have then I would like to know what you are smoking.

I’m not new to comics but I’ve never wanted to read anything too important to the main marvel universe, but the portrayal of Reed and Sue in Rivals has had me reading 60’s fantastic four for about 2 weeks now and I can’t stop. No MCU or even marvel animation project has ever gotten me to want to learn more about these characters so much.

I think it's amazing that they focus more on making the characters feel like themselves rather than appealing to what executives tend to think the masses want. Spiderman, you'd expect him to get all the spotlight and be the easiest to play, since most people who only know the mainstream stuff probably'd wanna play as him, but no, instead he is a character who gets the same amont of attention as literally anyone else and is hard to play because you need to be just as precise as a "real" spider-person would have to be to pull off all the cool shit he does, and I love to see how they don't shy away from no part of the universe, be it mystical, grounded, sci-fi, cosmic, whatever it is, if it's cool and in the comics, it's gonna be there
Regarding the thing with Spiderman, I think that's exactly why they made Venom be in the opposite side of the difficulty spectrum.
Yes, Spidey is by far the hardest heroe to do cool tricks, so it takes time for a fan to feel like they can be Spider-Man.
But Venom, while being just as popular and having technically "similar" abilities, is way more forgiving for new players, with great sustain and mobility to survive almost any situation without depending on having pro healers by your side, which helps players be more independent and enjoy the game without a deep gamesense or team coordination.
In a nutshell, Rivals really appeals to both the casual and more hardcore players, which ia amazing.

As a squirrel girl comic fan since Ryan North’s run, I am SO SO appreciative for how much love and care they put into making even a silly character like Doreen so accurate to her comics. Whether it’s using Milana Vayntrub’s voice (she also was the voice of squirrel girl in a marvel podcast a while ago), or her voice lines referring to her Deadpool villain card guide, or even speaking about Monkey Joe’s passing ??? Like this is SOO much love and care that makes me so happy to play the game :) Plus the lore and stories they write for each character’s bio is so incredible
I had previously taken a bit of a "soft hiatus" from the mainstream comics for a while, and because of that I skipped out on basically the entire Krakoa era of the X-Men, only really hearing about it through news articles and the occasional YT video, but because Rivals seems to be leaning so hard into the Krakoa lore (it was even leaked that both Krakoa *and* Arrako are going to be future maps) I actually decided to start catching up by getting the first volumes of House of X & Powers of X. This kind of exposure really does work to get people to check out the original source material, even for people like me who do read comics to check out what I'd recently scene as a bygone weird era of X-Men that I'd missed on by the time I got back into dedicated reading.
Can I just say... I LOVE the art style and direction of this game. Like omg I cannot express how much I adore the look of this game. The unabashedly comic aesthetic is just everything to me. AND THE EFFECTS???? TO DIE FOR
I've been skirting around the edge of Marvel fandom for a while--I've been aware of it, played some of the games and watched some of the MCU stuff, read the beginning of a few trades--so i knew i liked the *idea* of Squirrel Girl, especially in her Unbeatable Squirrel Girl incarnation. But man she is SO charming in Marvel Rivals and is quickly becoming my favorite. I love that she got to stay a little plus-sized and her voice actor really delivered. So I've been definitely tempted to really give her comics a read through !
It's also made my algorithm on TH-cam introduce me to a ton of creators that focus on superhero comics so that's been awesome!
I really like how dettached it is from the MCU, like you said, everyone is on equal footing, this helps boost the rep of newcomers so that they can become iconic household names that will have several runs in future decades and will be reinvented instead of forgotten, like spidey and the avengers and all the other popular characters and teams, comic fans often complain about how new comic runs are always just reboots of spiderman's story or the story of some other character or whatever but like, when they are given something new to try they compare it to their classics and toss it to the side, this is how we help prevent that type of behavior
Best example in the game for me of how un-MCU it is would be the treatment of IronMan by the other characters, he's not treated as some virtuous hero who sacrificed himself for the greater good... he's seen as a really smart guy with a bit of an attitude problem and an ego who sometimes has good ideas and other times... not so much, just one genius in the sea of other geniuses that exist in the Marvel Universe... Hell, in his interaction with Sue Storm he lowkey admits to her that Reed is smarter than him, in a very conceited way, but that's perfect because that's what you'd expect of his actual character in the comics
It's so fun seeing Rivals helping people know more about the lesser known characters, especially now with MCU not being the easy money maker it was, Marvel letting non-MCU characters being in the same light as something like the Avengers feels great
Now more people can see how big and interesting the Marvel universe is, to street level to even cosmic level, there's something for everybody

Aa someone who hasn't been a Marvel fan in a long time now Rivals did inspire me to go have a look at some of my favourite Marvel Comics again. Spiderman, The Power Pack and Nova are all characters that I had forgotten how much I liked!
Started playing rivals, and it finally got me to read comics, reading through the X-Men and New Mutants now, and now I want to read Namor’s stuff because I started playing him and he may be a dweeb but he’s fun to play so I read more comics and now I’m sitting here hoping they add Rom the Spaceknight and Warlock (the cooler designed one) and I’m just accepting they won. They got me into comics. They got me watching marvel shows and movies again. “The Moooon haunts you!” Plays in my head every ten minutes, this game has mastered the art of making me love marvel. I used to assume the fantastic four were kinda jerks because that’s all I saw of them, and now I think the Richards are swell and I’m excited for Johnny and Ben. It’s just too good.

The fact that they are including a bunch of lesser known characters gives me hope we might actually see some of the Runaways aside from Nico Minoru be brought into the spotlight. I think it’s so cool that people aren’t making fun of any of the characters, but are actually respecting each one because of unique each one is to one to another. Such as, Magik being a dynamic duelist and Adam Warlock being a very useful support. The dialogue between people in lobby has shown a lot of people more characterization more than most modern adaptations. Like you said, it doesn’t belittle who they are.
I think Marvel Rivals is a perfect opportunity for Superhero adaptations and it's fun to play the game, enjoying the game and growing a new fan base with these characters are popular and not so popular, it shows have a unique chance to get these characters before jumping into the MCU (like Fantastic Four for example). As I read the Marvel Rivals Infinity Comic (jumping to print as a one shot in April 2025), those character interactions are top notch and gave us a new Team-up Abilities like Luna Snow and Jeff the Land Shark, and the skins are beautiful, inspired from the Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also original skins are tied to the game's narrative storyline that's I've been hooked. A lot of Vtubers (Virtual TH-camrs are called, Jenna Anderson), TH-cam and Twitch Streamers and fans want to jump in and play Marvel Rivals. I never played Marvel Rivals but I want to play Marvel Rivals as a longtime Marvel Fan that started my journey to Marvel Fandom for a decade.
I think Marvel Rivals is a perfect jumping on point for Marvel to create more, enjoy more and play more in this new universe of Marvel Rivals. I hope gamers and Marvel Fans old and new, have opportunity to read Marvel Comics or watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the very first time, thanks to Marvel Rivals.

i’ve never been interested in comics before, but marvel rivals instantly got me hooked. i fell in love with one of the character designs- adam warlock, my beloved- and decided to read up on his lore. and then i actually started to dive into his comics and god i love my golden son so much. i’m so happy this game introduced me to him!
For heroes to add next, my top picks would be Janet Van Dyne’s as The Wasp and Matt Murdock’s Daredevil.
I haven't seen Galacta since her solo mini-series back in the early 2000s (I think), so seeing her now and voiced is a huge blast from the past for me.
I been waiting for a video like this that allows me to talk about this aspect of the game. I got into superheros with the Raimi spider-man movies and always WANTED to get into comics further because of them, but never could because I thought I needed to buy them from a comic store, where none was around. So I loved comic book related youtube channels growing up.
Now that I am older I have rectified this childhood hinderance and read plenty of them. I feel pretty much every character was adapted near perfectly, with only two nitpicks, that being the antiheros Punisher and Moon Knight. Moon Knight often voices how his alternate personalities are feeling as he does certain things in the game, and while that's not at all a bad thing, it can feel a tiny bit gimmicky for a real life mental illness that real people struggle with. This version of him did manage to find some equilibrium with his alters though but not yet with Khonshu, the God that he serves.
And Punisher feels too much like this game's "bad boy". From flirting with Black Widow in his lore to outright threatening characters like the Invisible Woman. I don't feel this is accurate to who he is, he isn't flirty or outwardly hostile to anyone that isn't a villain or criminal. In this game he WAS given the Super soldier serum that extends his life span so maybe THAT made him the way he is as it can enhance aspects of your personality in lore, but it still just feels wrong.
What this game does, that also Marvel vs Capcom did before, was introduce me to new characters. I never hard of Luna Snow before this game and from what I hear there will be more "unheard" of characters which I am even more excited about than the A-listers!
I also feel the spaces where modern avengers fans and modern x-men fans can enjoy the SAME piece of media at the same time has been minimal. Deadpool v wolverine being the most recent example. But this game having , psylock, namor, wolverine, magneto, wanda, and then to have guardians of the galaxy, avengers, spidey verse. its so nice to see the bigger scale of the comics actually grasped vs just focusing on a small section of it.
I am so appreciative of the fact that Marvel Rivals introduced me to Magik & that coincidentally, I became obsessed with Magik right before her first issue of her new solo series got released! The timeline of events was me looking at Magik and I thought she was hot and badass, then I played her a lot and her gameplay was perfect for me, and then I started looking more into her history and character story within the game and outside of the game - and here I am now with so much knowledge of her backstory and the stories she has been a part of all the way from her introduction to as recently as seeing her in the new Ultimate universe (okay she may be in her evil era but she looks damn good being evil) and of course Magik #1. My obsession is so bad my in game name for Marvel Rivals is “Lesbian Magik” because I am so obsessed with Illyana that I have transcended canonicity and have chosen to believe that Illyana and Kitty are true and real girlfriends and they kiss and muah muah… and also because I can only play Magik😭
I've been reading through everything related to cloak and dagger, characters I barely even recognized as existing before this game, and it's been a great time

Great video, i used to read DC and Marvel comics heavily for about 2-4 years but there's a lack of progression that'd i like for most of these superhero stories and came to realize im probably not gonna get that with these two brands (unfortunately), but thats fine. That's kind of why i like the MCU since they kind of have no choice but to move on with adapting these heroes to the mains screen. I think the MCU has done what they can and have made a really cool universe that we probably wouldn't think would be possible if someone told me this years ago. Rivals has been a treat to see alot of the comic aspects of these characters being thrown to people who only know one version of them, it's been real awesome. I would love the MCU to lean in just a bit more into taking stuff from the comics (mainly costumes, i like flashy lol).
The two best choices they ever could've made with Rivals right at the start of the game is not only linking to other comics with the skins they sell, which gets folks interested in reading specific books so they can see the source material, but by putting the Fantastic Four, the characters that saved Marvel Comics in the 60s, in the very first full season of the game while attention is at an all time high. F4 have been so poorly handled in non-comic mediums that it makes me so happy to finally see these guys all get their due.
Rivals has finally convinced me to dip into reading every 616 Marvel comic, starting from the 60s and going onward, and I am loving it so much. I also started reading Demon Days, which is where Rivals Psylocke originates from. Peach Momoko's artstyle is so pretty!
I would say these adaptations are Peak Marvel in terms of comic aesthetics, representation, and showcasing the variety of Marvel while also being quality:

They just let Superman sit on the shelf and collect dust when people have been begging for a Superman game for 20 years. Audience have wanted numerous projects, but just like Marvel and Disney, they are lazy af and once they find a winner, they never think of ways to be more creative. People are complaining about it even now and they are still talking about Batman games.

If people let wonder woman fail too then be prepare for more batman for the next decade. That's just what the business is. If you don't make money, if you don't draw you can enjoy the catering. Same goes for the DC movies as well. People only ever watch batmans stuff. Why would you as a studio throw money into something knowing full well that it'll fail more likely than not?

So Im 40 and Rivals has been a breath of fresh air and it's definitely got me back into reading comics! Just playing the game had awakened all my X-men and Fantastic Four knowledge that had laid dormant since my childhood lol When I stream the game I've become an encyclopedia of old knowledge. Everyone is familiar with MCU lore but X-men and Fantastic Four have been shoved to the side for so long that the mainstream audience isn't as familiar. Now Im picking up books that ive missed over the past 15 years. Just started the Krokoa arc last week!
This game has the same vibes as Lego marvel superheroes in terms of how authentic it feels. Like everyone feels exactly how you would expect based on who they are. And man it feels great to have the xmen and fantastic 4 back in the spotlight ever since the avengers took the stage

Marvel Heroes the Aarpg had squirrel girl based on the 80s comics and she was the best summoned in the game with hordes of squirrels doing the damage for her.

I love that there are extensive wall of text lore & story for each character, and that you unlock mini story comics with each section of a season.
I'm currently waiting for Demon Days to arrive in the mail after going down a rabbit hole investigating Psylocke's new design and Peach Momoko's art. Since I was already shopping, I threw in a fun looking Luke Cage comic at the same time. I haven't bought a superhero comic in about 8 or 10 years, but this was a great catalyst! The vibrancy and passion behind Marvel Rivals really allowed me to feel that pull again. You explained this whole phenomenon wonderfully, and it's nice to affirm how widespread it all is!
One of my favorite parts of Rivals is definitely the character variety. Throwing lesser known characters into the ring with household names takes me back to the pre-MCU era of Marvel content; for a while there, it felt like games and TV shows were relegated to _just_ using the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man.
Interesting video. I am a manga-videogames enthusiast and always kinda looked down on western nerdom, specially MCU movies. This game soemhow got me watching a few of them (guardians mostly) and even reading comics! Im reading the 60s uncanny x-men from the start, and the ongoing all-new venom one. Its interesting, I dont know why this game of all comic related media is what finally got me into trying it.

I can speak on the game mechanics: they are really, really good. I also like the fact that while the characters in the game are canonically alternates, who are different from their portrayal in the comics, they still feel like the characters. I can absolutely see Psylocke as a medieval Japanese warrior who hunts demons. Or T'Challa as a guy who decides to take humanity to the stars using Wakandan superscience. I freaking love this game.
It's definitely working. I've never had any interest in the comics but tried to start reading them because of how much I was enjoying Rivals.
Sad to say I've already given up because marvel unlimited seemed like the friendliest way to start, but the ux and searchability was so awful that I've already cancelled 😅 but hey it's still probably more than the mcu can claim.

It's weird, because I have the complete opposite take. Marvel Rivals works because it roots itself in concepts introduced in the Live Action movies, then it branches back into the comics with their ascetics and history. The only ones who have yet to make a live action appearance are Jeff, Luna, Squirrel Girl, Penni (Who I feel was represented in Spider-verse) and technically this Iron Fist and Psylocke.
Psylocke was technically in X-men: Apocalyspe, so even she’s technically been in a live action movie. Honestly adds to your point though.
@@littlewinston8141 I think they're referring to the version of Psylocke we have in rivals. Sai from Demon Days, which, like Lin Lie's inclusion, seems like a way to sort of... distance themselves from some of the baggage those two characters have had
@ Yeah true I didn’t think of that. Honesty I prefer the versions we have in rivals anyways, they’re a lot more interesting to me.
One thing I really liked about the MCU was that it cleaned up a lot of the comics lore (i.e. retcons and unnecessarily complicated backstories) a lot like how Batman The Animated Series did, and Rivals also followed a similar fashion of sticking with the basics of these characters and what makes them interesting!

The avengers game looked too realistic, whereas this looks incredible from every angle because of its style
I think what Rivals proves is you don't need to explain origin stories to have people attached to a character. The MCU has rarely tried to simply assume a main character has always existed in the world (you know, like the real world works) and they are instead forced to think about origin stories and introductions every time they want to show a new character. Thanos was one of the notable exceptions and his success is just the exception that proves the rule. Spiderverse was also very good at that, with characters that simply EXIST and then we get to meet them without needing to develop them that much. The Marvel universe is filled with super people everywhere, just use them. Like imagine if people kept talking about the Xmen or mutants and then they happened to appear, instead of needing to figure out how to introduce them in the MCU during the Xmen movie (I know this is because they didn't own them before but I think you get the example).
Edit: I'm mostly referring to unknown characters. Spiderman was introduced without an origin because it was pretty easy, you don't need to explain what spiderman is about. But I think you could make a movie where, idk, Magik or Cloak and Dagger suddenly appear and you don't need to explain what they're about or anything, but simply use them because they are cool and interesting characters just like that.

I'm an avid gamer but I don't much care for shooters. Still. I love how happy this game is making people.
Also glad Marvel vs Capcom Collection put those games on modern hardware. Mvc2 is finally out of jail!

I dont fully believe this is because of rivals becauae I think her popularity has been on the up for a few years but when I went to pick up magik #1 my comic book store was almost sold out and they told me marvel didnt send enough for how popular the character is now seems kinda crazy a lesser known x-man can be underestimated now

IMHO, Marvel Avengers Alliance (MAA) is still THE game that got the adaptions right. The characters, abilities, encounters, missions, story there are ACTUALLY comic-accurate, a lot more than Rivals (which is a very liberal adaption). That was the game that got me into comics. I miss it.
The honor of “Best Marvel Game” still belongs to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but Rivals is definitely up there so far. Now, if only they could add gyro aiming for PS5 & PC.

omg unrelated but i never watch comics youtubers bc usually the ones that pop up on my feed are men talking abt the plot beats of a particular character's history, which just doesn't rlly interest me bc it generally ignores comics as a story and narrative and how it makes u feel and allat and those vids don't make u wanna actually engage and read the comics. and like honestly as a nerdy girl i've been fighting for my life tl;dr im just happy to have a girl talking abt comics with cute pink hearts on the thumbnail in my feed 😭

Ive been reading the comics already since Thanksgiving 2024 but it did encourage me to check out the Marvel Rivals comic to get context for the battles. I actually like how good of a job they're doing with it and it helped me feel incentivized enough to collect and read the lore pages for sesson 1 when in season 0 I was just annoyed I worked by butt off to get part of a comic book but instead all I got was text on a screen. But I really want to see them defeat Dracula even if I never see them beat the Dooms because that will likely be drawn out for years.

Before marvel rivals I could not tell the difference between DC and Marvel. I was the one lame freind in the group asking if Batman was going to be added. Or why x-men mutants were in the game cuz marvels is the Avengers not X-men (I didn’t know they were). I think, despite being generally into nerd culture, super heroes and comics never resonated with me the way it did for my friends. I found the MCU to be annoying and over exposed. My dad and brother made me watch guardians of the galaxy and I thought star lord was the most annoying character in the universe and was genuinely rooting for the villain to kill him.
Marvel Rivals did make me more curious tho. Outside of being a fun experience to play, I found myself wondering what the hell all these characters were talking about. How does magic powers exist along side mutants, existing along side super technology and science. I didn’t know characters like Namor, Luna Snow, or Peni Parker even existed. I never knew about some connections between characters too. Like Magneto being Scarlet Witches father.
Am I a fan of marvel all of a sudden. No. Not really. But it did make me wonder if black widow has so little going on super power wise that they gave her a sniper rifle and a dash cuz what’s all she had going for her in the movies. So I guess it got me to read a wiki page about her. The game did make me appreciate the comics more tho. I realized that Marvel has been around for a long time, and judging the whole of the brand off only just the MCU might be unfair of me to do so. It made me appreciate the story tellers and artists who came up with these ideas and put pen to paper to make something special.
And now I really like black widow. I wanna know why she’s always talking about the red room. What that is. Why is she so old and always talking about it (and also like seriously could they not think of any other ability to give her in game the wiki listed like 30 weapons and skills she’s used over the whole existence of the character). It just has me curious about the cast.
Except for Star Lord. He is still insufferably annoying to me.
What’s interesting about this game is that it’s giving popularity to the sht characters in the game and the op ones.

only bad thing about this game is the players.. squirrel girls portrayal would be so good to me (shes my favorite superhero) if not for the sexualizing of her by the fans when it calls her a teenager in her bio
this is an issue with marvel and overwatch fans too, so i guess it makes sense
She ain't a teenager, she's mentioned to he in college in her bio. She's 20 something in the comics.
@ my bad i was thinking of the peni bio (another character frequently sexualized by the community), but shes still usually a teenager in the comics, more often than she is 20 (from my experience). in “the coming of squirrel girl” her origin comic shes “fifteen. well, fifteen next july actually” and in all the other squirrel girl media ive consumed she either stays “fifteen next july” or is unspecified. my bad for not putting enough research into my first comment, i was just tired of seeing people sexualize her (and a bunch of other female characters on the roster)

They're fictional characters and honestly it doesn't really matter at all. Teenager technically can still mean 18 or 19.
Plus just because Squirrel girl is represented as one age more doesn't mean this version is meant to be.
I honestly see no problem with it at all, so just recommend you avoid those areas of the Community. It ain't a big deal.
Edit: Plus due to laws in some places games can't have minors who are Killable. So likely if asked they would say Peni is 18 for that reason. Plus to me she looks older than any comic appearance.
Squirrel girl clearly looks 20 to me personally. All other characters look like adults as well.
Only true debate is Peni and is completely fair to be uncomfortable with. The rest though are clearly 100% adults.
The maker skin got me down a rabbit whole trying to know who he is, so yeah definitely this game has revive my love for this story’s
I know he's popular and has already been datamined but I hope Deadpool makes an appearance. He's been in a lot of video games already but I'd love to hear his brand of self-aware humor in a hero shooter

I honestly think most people praising it just enjoy the animesque designs and the bubble butts.
While I appreciate the latter I find nothing "right" or "special" about Marvel Rivals. It's just Overwatch with more iconic characters and slightly less greedy practices. There'll be "Marvel Rivals is dying" videos from hungry TH-camrs in a few months.
I doubt it, Marvel Rivals has hundreds of thousands of players for a reason, a game like that doesn’t just die after a few months, besides we are getting two characters every season. THAT Is what Marvel Rivals simply does better. They have committed themselves to give us more (and better) content than Overwatch could ever hope!
@@TheApexLion1234 yeah true. Also, it's way more fun to play rivals because of how much the characters interact in battle. There are infinite possibilities, and every character has it's own unique potencial

This is such a bad take that it doesn’t even feel genuine. If all you got from this game was “cartoons” and “nice butts” then I wholeheartedly recommend you try the game out for yourself and if you somehow already have then I would like to know what you are smoking.
Am a old school comic reader. Not so up to date with the modern age. But buy comic books now and then. Haven't used my computer for years for games . But I might I might download this game. Just to see the hype. Good review. 🦸🏿♂️
