    Those gears make all the difference, it looks like a beautifully turned piece of machinery, the handle movement is contained so this mill uses less space and can tuck into a smaller workshop - huge bonus - in my classroom, it would open up lots of possibilities for students with mobility issues so this for me, is a winner! Thank you for challenging Durston and well done Durston for meeting that challenge.

      Thank you Viv! It truly is an awesome machine! It is quite big compared to my previous rolling mill but with the wheel up front you can place it on a table that is placed against a wall. So you can save some space there.

    I have back and neck problems too from several surgeries and I've been struggling with my Pepe tools economy mill. I've had an electric mill on my wish list but I'm now rethinking that after seeing the gears on this one! I live in the states so it's a bit more expensive to buy Durston here but I will have to look into this mill. Thank you so much for sharing!

      I really am very happy with it. You do have to turn it a couple of extra times but you don't have to apply any force. And sitting down or being able to stand in a stable position while using it is great. I can sit down, 'lock up my spine' (if you know what I mean) and just turn the wheel. No sudden movements or having to apply pressure. I have never used an electric rolling mill so I can't help you out there. I can help you with a Durston supplier in the states. That's Gesswein and with the code EST21 you will receive a 5% discount. So that could be interesting for you. They don't have the Olivia on their website but I am sure they can hook you up with her.

      @@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials sounds like a great option and I have used Gesswein for many supplies in the past. They have really great customer service too. I love the Durston brand but at the time I got my economy mill, I was just getting started in metalsmithing and it fit my small budget. Lol.... I'm really excited about the Olivia and thank you for the demo and info. I'm certain that you will enjoy yours for many years to come because Durston truly lasts a lifetime. I also enjoy watching you work and teach. You are a natural and you are shining a light on this wonderful craft and showing how much fun it can be. I absolutely love what I do and I know you do as well. You are a real Ladysmith indeed!

    What a perfect little rolling mill. It was nice of them to recognize peoples needs and stepped up to make a real difference. And it was super nice of them to gift you with such an amazing piece of equipment . I understand back pain and the act of reaching for something at arms length, and then , have to put out more manual force to make it work. Beautiful tutorial. I could listen to you all day🙂.

    Wow, just wow is right!! I have considered buy a rolling mill for several years and Durston has been the forerunner of manufacturers in my research, mainly because of ease of use and less effort to operate. I have many issues with my hands and dominant arm making using a rolling mill seem like an unlikely tool for my studio. I also have problems with my back making standing for long periods impossible. The Olivia seems to be the solution for all my needs! Thank you for this product review. You have made my decision on the right rolling mill for me clear!

      Thank you so much Linda! I truly am happy with the Olivia. It is a wonderful mill and I don't have to apply much pressure. In your case, if you are having problems with your arm, an electric rolling mill can be an option as well. I believe Durston sells these as well. Might be worth investigating.

    this is so informative - thank you! the studio where i'm learning jewelrymaking were going to get the olivia, but decided against it because of having to spin the wheel so much while the metal feeds through slowly. however, i have back problems as well and often find it hard to just get one ingot to a thickness i need - standing at the regular mill sideways can make it a tiny bit easier, but the olivia model looks like it would make a world of a difference. i really hope you can give us an update sometime in the future, on whether it's made it easier on your back in the long run, and whether the slower speed is an issue at all. i'm considering getting it for my home workstation :)

      Hi Alisa, meanwhile I have been using the Olivia for a while. I still am very happy with it. You do have to turn the wheel a bit more often, but because you barely have to use any force it still feels easier to use. I can sit behind the Olivia an focus on stabilizing my back. I only use one arm to rotate and I don't have to apply force or rotate my body in a certain position. I can sit perfectly still and for me that makes all of the difference. If you are looking for a rolling mill and you are having back problems this one can be really interesting. Looking into an electric rolling mill might be an idea as well. And if you are looking to buy a rolling mill, feel free to use one of the affiliate codes I have mentioned in the description of the video. These will give you a 5 - 10% discount and I will receive a small bonus as well. But of course, never feel obligated to,

    I have limited mobility/pain issues and was wondering if electric would be best. This Olivia model could work. Is it less expensive than electric?

    • @brindisia
      @brindisia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the UK this rolling mill is less expensive than an electric model.

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials

      Hi Monty, you could check out the Durston website to compare prices. I don’t know anything about the electric rolling mills they sell. You do have to be able to move your arm while rolling with this rolling mill. But you don’t have to apply as much force because it is almost rolling on it’s own (if you anneal in time and take it step by step). And you don’t have to move your handle up and down while applying force all the way. For instance, I used to give my previous rolling mill a bump with my hips or legs from time to time because otherwise I couldn’t get the handle to move. I just couldn’t apply enough force from my back. I can sit right in front of the Olivia rolling mill and the only thing that is moving is my arm. So I can lock my back if you know what I mean. My torso doesn’t have to move. I hope this information can help you out a bit.

      You can check out Durston Tools to check out the price (in the description below this video you can find a 10% discount code). If you are from Europe, ordering through Herens&Herens might be interesting as well. In that case you will not have to pay import taxes. You can find more information about them as well in the description below this video.

    I love your jewellery videos, but I have to say as beautiful and easy that big wheel is to turn.....I notice as you said (it needs to be rotated a lot more times) that would be a minus for me as I also noticed it’s a lot slower for the wire to go all the way through too. Nope it’s definitely not a mill for me, I don’t want to be turning that big wheel that much for one pass.

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am going to make a new video in the next couple of weeks in which I can compare the actual speed of the two rolling mills. Because even though the Olivia has to turn more, it is way easier to turn the wheel (faster and lighter) and you don’t have to turn the wheel in the same big motion as you should do with the handle on the side on a regular rolling mill. It didn’t feel like it took much longer than the regular rolling so I am curious to see the outcome of this test myself as well.

      @@Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials I contact Durston when I was in Uk in Julay. The idea was to visit them and purchase a miller. They refused my visit with a silly excuse inviting me two months after. Italy just few days before Italy was the winner of European football cup. match against England. So my answer is "it was more easy to take the European Cup in Italy then a Durston miller" !!!
      End of my love story for Durston.

    Good for Durston for once they came with some thing on their and did not copy some one else's product, 1600.00 GBP that's over $5000.00 AUD, 50 : 1 gearbox not a problem if you wish to spend all day at the rolling mill, you may as just buy a electric mill for less money, faster operation, no bulky hand wheel which makes it hard to use form any other position the front on, something tells me it won't be one of their big sellers.

    • @kizzywitch
      @kizzywitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @pijnto I have to agree, I was thinking the same thing, I know what a bad back feels like though so good on that point however I fear my back would get better only to get arm issues because no mater how easy it is to turn that big wheel, even just moving your arm midair that much over and over without even touching a wheel would be sore for me 😆

    • @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials
      @Estona.Jewelry.Tutorials  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can understand that you are worried about the milling taking a lot longer, but it truly doesn’t take you that much longer. Because the milling itself (the turning of the wheel) is so much easier and lighter and you don’t have to make such big movements. Maybe I should do a video in which I compare the two rolling mills in milling itself. The time it costs to mill two exactly the same pieces to a certain width. That can be a good idea. Furthermore I think it is a wonderful machine and as someone who is limited in movement for me it absolutely is a game changer. I hope it will be a top seller for Durston!
