Great performance by Malmö Symphony Orchestra! For those of you who wonder why this piece is not more performed, Grieg was not happy with the piece, and he wrote in the score: "Må aldrig oppføres". Which translates to: "Must never be performed"

And I can't understand why he was so disappointed by this piece, which great as most of his works (although, yes, Grieg gave his best in small or rhapsodic pieces, but yet there's his Quartet, his Sonata etc.).

@@SPscorevideos Eh, I kind of can. If you wrote the Symphonic Dances, I don't think you'd necessarily want this symphony representing your voice as an orchestral composer. This symphony is so indebted to Schumann and Mendelssohn, and he would go on to forge such a unique sound world in his later works.
Not saying this is a bad piece - it's a good example of its type. But when you're in the business of inventing altogether new types, I think you'd rather not draw attention away from your more innovative work.

@@willcwhite The Symphonic Dances are just arrangements of traditional Norwegian Halling Dances for Orchestra. They were originally played on the Hardanger Fiddle.

@@willcwhite Grieg wanted to flatter Niels Gade, who had been a student of Schumann and Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in Leipzig. Later Grieg marked his distance to the style of Gade, which he experienced as "too soft" for real Nordic music.

An unjustly neglected work. Youthful, yes, but the sublime second movement shows much of the composer Grieg was to become.

I think it sounds like Dvorak's Symphony no. 0 in C minor.

I heard the end of allegro molto vivace at work and it reminded me of the power cell sound from jak and daxter lmao

The adagio is like a Beethoven adagio. It is very beautiful but the interpretation is just not expressive because it is afraid of creating contrast between the key moments. from 19:00 to 19:30 it goes like blindfolded, and does not resembles like a true aria melody, where the violins stand out from time to time. It is played as a big block.
