The reason to have an RS4 over an S4 was for the two extra cylinders. Now they are both V6's the S4 is now the pick, will probably perform pretty similar in real life (non track) motoring and will likely be more comfortable.
The "S" range of Audi's are now running the same power and more than RS cars from not that long ago. The S range is now the sweet spot.
Totally agree, it doesn't feel like an upgrade to go from an S4 to an RS4 anymore.
But the S4 is only still S4... I would buy the RS.
That is not entirely correct, the last gen S4 before the mid-term refresh had the same V8 engine as the RS4 from the same generation... actually most larger S- and RS-Audis share the same engine. Current S6 and RS6: both have the same V8 engine. Last gen S6 and RS6: both had the 5.2l V10.
It was a shocker, especially with a Manual, which is why it was dropped.
I have a current S6 Avant which I bought over an RS6 as it's simply a better daily driver and in 99% of the times is just as quick. But I own other cars when I want "sporty".
I see the RS models as lots of cars rolled up into one, ideal if you can only have one car. But the thing is that lots of attributes rolled up as one creates a lot of comprises. There are too many compromises in the RS4 to make it truly a daily, the ride is simply unacceptably harsh for UK roads, this is where the S models then make more sense.

If i were to drive a car arround the world that would be the Jaguar F-Type R. And if possible the exact one one you had. It's just BRILLIANT!
The way guy just slowly turns around to look at you at 10:29...you better have said good things about the RS4 near him lol.
I'd drive around the world with an urban autos or twisted defender! Beefed up off road suspension, deep tread tires, extended arches and mud flaps. The 110 double cab with pickup bed loaded with the spare wheel and some jerry cans, luggage rack and LED "collapsed sun" on the roof with bull bar / external reinforced bumpers and to complete the spectre lion I'd have pointless rope on the bonnet! Ooh and let's not forget the winch! Dark green with tan finished interior and black wheels.
That's the car for me, and heck I could be the ultimate crew car to film Sam taking the rs4 on the trip!

Audi saloons have finally shed themselves of that frumpy Mondeo look... They all look great.
The roads around Harrold and Sharnbrook aren’t good roads at all with regards to surface quality. Even when the surface is smooth, the subsurface is all undulations so it’s difficult for any car to handle. Hearing those names and seeing the road into Harrold brought back lots of memories both good and bad, but none the less great video sam!

Anything that is a "S" should be atleast a V6. anything that is a "RS" should be atleast a V8. Ofcourse you cant fit a V8 in an RS3 but anything that is RS4 and up should be a V8

Come here from the Brand new AMG C63 S Estate video, I used to vote for Audi RS anything over any AMG's, Now I prefer AMG.
Old school RS6, RS3 and RS4 are still absolute monsters, but AMG... They are monsters with superior interiors and better sound.
Love your videos! Problem with Audi is that those cars need a V8 and if they don't have one people will change the brand just as I did.
Around the World trip it’d be very capable, but a bit dull I suspect. Whether front, or rear wheel drive, the need to think about your throttle inputs makes driving more fun ... so I’d pick a 2 wheel drive car for the kicks

Right now I am considering switching back from my 335D xDrive Touring, to an S4 Avant. I had heard the RS4 was substantially better, but I am racing, I am driving around normally and occasionally taking my family on holiday etc. Is the RS4 overkill when 90% of it's life it will be spent

It's a brilliant car but if I had the choice i'd still go for a Sprint Blue B7 RS4 Saloon.
i would go for the RS6 though i love the looks and the performance on the RS6 performance, but considering the MPG on the RS6, yeah well. for all around the world car, it's going to be the RS4 avant quadro.

My next car after my S4 Avant has aged a bit.....I didn't go for the older RS4 or an older RS6 as they drink far too much fuel for my liking...especially when you're doing grand trips around Europe from our home in UK.
This test of an RS4 is more impressive than Paul's "big" announcement.
The fact Audi does not want to make a sedan/saloon version really hurts for us who live in markets where the avant won’t be coming... sure there will be an RS5 sportback but what people actually want is a sedan!! Has Audi never heard of the BMW M3? At least there is the RS3 sedan but still

I do think this RS4 might be great but for me, the ULTIMATE « complete » car is the GLC (suv not coupe) 63 s AMG !! It does everything greatly with a lovely V8 note as a bonus ^^
I just contacted Akrapovic today when they're releasing or whether they're already testing and what performance improvements will it "cause" with new B9 line (RS4/5), as soon as I get the confirmation I'm buying it, just don't know which color to pick yet because the car looks soooooo good even in green (which I hate in general BTW), so as soon as it's confirmed Akra will release I'm getting one, was always fan of dark grey (had B7 in that with matte black wheels) and it was stunning, but on new one the colors are soooo well choosen that it's hard to pick the best one...
Hope on about 20hp power/25nm torque improvement from Akrapovic exhaust and another 15-20, maybe 25% improvement in ECU/turbo mods, hope to reach 570-600hp on small 2.9L engine, but we'll see, just can't wait

No way this will beat the RS6. Own my second one soon and that car is purely the best every day car in the world for those who dislike SUV and like performances all the time, with comfort, space and menacing look. This is a nice car, but only RS6's baby. Not more.

I think fast wagons are so much better and 10 times more cool than all these SUVs people drive today. SUVs are just wagons that drive worse and have to have a suboptimal ride quality to stop it from beeing seasick, while having a wagon gives you the same feeling of a car. I drive a BMW touring and have a baby and two dogs sensibly in it, but at the same time will do a happy slide in the rain and snow when I am alone and that makes me happy.
Around the world trip, the RS4 would be one of the ultimate cars for the job. However, being a Land Rover fan boy, I'd take the Range Rover sport SVR

RS6 is the most complete car but haven't driven the new RS4 so curious about that one but not a fan of test the cars before I buy.
Have had the S4 2013 and the RS4 2013 and really liked them but with the RS6 a whole different league!!
Also had the TTS when it first launched and after that the TTRS which was so fun and just bought the new one :)

Something you forgot to talk about this time is numbers about the engine or performance wise in general. I know, it's not a supercar etc etc, but still... About the car, nice and everything but personally, like the RS6, the Avant version is too long

What is it with "stuck on" screens on dashes? Is it just me being an older guy - I think they ruin the lines of a dash. Why not integrated or imo, fold away...But as a lover of station wagons - very nice all in all

My Nan loves hers. You can fit shopping and a cat basket in the boot. The leather seats wipe clean too. Very handy once you develop incontinence. Apart from the bellend factor Audi attracts its perfect for the elderly.

I don't like the new Audi RS4. Its not that there is no V8 anymore, because the car benefits from having the lighter V6. The reason for me not liking it is the lack of excitement it seems to have. The RS4 seems to be a really good car but it doesn't set your pulse on fire that much. Also, I can't get on with the way it sounds inside and out. It sounds a bit meh to me for an RS model. I would rather have a Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio or, as a direct estate competitor for the RS4, a Mercedes-AMG C63 estate.

I _had_ the last RS4 and I _loved it._ But it is massively down on torque compared to the BMW and Mercs it was competing against. This car fixes that, but at the expense of the soundtrack... Will have to see when I finally get to drive one but it does look amazing. The only thing I don't like is the same thing I don't like on lots of new cars... The sat nav screen stuck on the middle of the dash like at the final review meeting someone went "Oh shit! No sat nav. Quick, put one there!"
It's hard to see there because of glare and it doesn't face the driver. Whereas the old one was recessed and shaded from the sunlight and angled toward the driver. I actually prefer the interior in general of the old car but that's purely subjective. The interior of the new A4's and hence the new RS4 is still world class and in my view miles better than BMW. And _anything_ is better than Mercedes god awful infotainment system, but that said, the MMI on Audi's is really good, especially with virtual cockpit. :)
And the boot will be MUCH better for my golf clubs. :)
And yeah, you can't get an RS4 without adjustable suspension, torque vectoring and dynamic ride control. Unless you fancy a bad back or a lot of time in hedges! :) And yes, if you had to have just one car, and you can't afford a Tesla Model X P100D Ludicrous, you get this. :)
It's interesting to know why BMW hasn't joined the power estates with the M cars
