Joseph Haydn, who considered his life as more akin to a craftsman‘s career than to an earthly manifestation of a genius, was 67 years old when he voiced his first complaint about the arduousness of his work and the feeling of not being physically up to the task. His librettist and coeval, the imperious and mule-headed Baron Gottfried van Swieten, had urged him to make the most of the success reaped so quickly by their mutual work “The Creation“. He suggested the production of another oratorio addressed to a broad public, this one treating the cycle of the four seasons in a theologically uncompromising manner. Little did it matter that this subject had been depicted hundreds of times in a variety of artistic forms and that Haydn himself had already broached this topic in his early symphonies of 1761, in which he evoked the parts of the day (“Le Matin“, “Le Midi“, etc.). Haydn had aged prematurely, and he now felt the pressure of celebrity. He was to deliver a work of equal if not greater impact than his previous stroke of genius. As soon as he completed the score of the “Seasons“ in February 1801, after two years of hard work, the grueling tension he had permanently subjected to exploded in an apparently psychologically induced, depression like illness.
A superb performance with wonderful soloists. I have heard this piece over twenty times and nev er get tired of it.
Superb production of Haydn, this.
Best ever for me, yet.
I have watched Helmuth Rilling's THE SEASONS at least 20 times since finding it shortly pre-covid19. I fell in love with the piece 56 years ago. Iwould try to time Haydn's sunrise with actual sunrise off Eastern Maine from the top of the [then] tallest building between Boston & the Pole [I think] in Brunswick ME: The Coles Tower @ Bowdoin College, brand-spanking-new 16-story obelisk.
Of course, Haydn's first light is far quicker to sunrise than the actual. I kept adjusting, adjusting, adjusting...with no synchronicity whatever.
The joy was in the love, the love, of the music.
I find myself continually returning to this sublime production, most especially l think in times of travail & stress.
It always refreshes, edifies and inspires
Genoten van de muziek en de beelden. Mooie uitvoering.
beautiful
wonderful performance - a delight to listen to
If I had a mansion there would be one room with this video playing on a loop 24/7

Those are Edition Peters. Anyone has the Barenreiter?
Second best conducting of the Oratorio only behind Emelyanychev’s interpretation
Helmuth Rilling understands precisely what the energy level should be right from the start! Rare! Most conductors interpret this work as if it was just another music for fireworks or parades...
Muito bem - Pena não haver libretto...Obrigado. Greetings from Cascais, Portugal.

@1:02:08 Ach das Ungewitter naht!
try finding the libretto for this. Impossible!
I found it, do you want original or original English or revised English?
Is it just me or is the video description is a tad disparaging...
The description is a poor introduction that casts very little light on this magnificent work and helps the listener to understand what is going on very little indeed.
It in fact misses the main point that - despite the composer’s on-setting ailments and old age - the music in fact reflects his physical ailments not one jot, it is both a mature work whilst remaining eternally youthful.
