I first heard "Slide" back in '77, and I said, "who are these brothers jammin' like this?" That was my intro to a band called Slave, still 1 of my all-time favorites, and Mark "Drac" Hicks became one of my tavorite guitar players and still is. RIP brother you eill never be forgotten. Nelson D. Coy
Y'all know what? "Drac", Mark Adams, Steve Arrington, Steve Washington, Danny Webster, Starleana Young, & Curt Jones need to have one more concert together.... REAL RAP!
Proud and happy to say, Amazing masterful talented musical groups from the "Gem City", Dayton, Ohio! The Ohio Players, Zapp featuring Roger, Heatwave, Slave, Sun, Shirley Murdock, Steve Arrington, Mel'sa Morgan and of course, Lakeside. Welcome to the "Land of Funk!"
Drac was pissed of about Starleana and Curt coming in and doing lead vocals, and that he didn't get to do his patened guitar solos anymore in 1980-81. I think they could have still incorporated Drac's solo in the their 80's synth R&B sound. It didn't completely hurt the group when he left because Mark Adams was the man on the bass. His bass drove the group along with Steve Arrington's vocals. R.I.P. Mark Adams, one of the greatest bass guitarist ever.
Regardless to the weight gain, they were jamming and they sounded good to me!! A party, birthday or otherwise was NOT jumping until "Slide" was played at least once. It is so good to see the old schoolers out there showing the young ones how its done!!
@stevi1955 - No doubt. Mad props to Dayton!! These were some ass whoopin' bands you listed. Great production on all those LPs of the groups you named as well. Unreal how a small city in Ohio can turn into the hotbed of the best music of the 70's and 80's.
The guys can jam. I listened to this song when I was teenager. Watching them still jam like this makes me proud to be from my generation the musicians of today pale in comparison.
This is "SLAVE"!!! Mark Hicks A.K.A. Drac from the early, early years on the guitar. He's gone now too. R.I.P. Drac. Type in Slave Interview and you'll see him and Mark Adams being interviewed.
The brother in the black cape was inimitable Mark Hicks AKA Drac from the old Slave... Arguably one of the baddest (meaning the best) axemen of the last 35 years. I give him credit for keeping the dream of SLAVE alive. Gone way too soon along with Mark L. Adams AKA The Hansolar. May they R.I.P.
There was a Steve Washington & Steve Arrington. Washington was the unsung leader of the group & trumpet player. Arrington joined the group after "Slide" came out and was it's lead singer & drummer.... I may be late on the response, but this is the facts.
My son's are learning how to play the bass and the lead and rhythm guitar. I got 'em listening to Mark Adams and Mark Hicks A.K.A The Hansolar and Drac. No better musicians could have been chosen.
Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire.. Maurice White's brother.... You are totally right about the list of bass players.... Don't forget: Michael Henderson, Keni Burke, Rick James, Byron Miller (George Duke), and of course the almighty Larry Graham.
Guess 30 years may have taken it's took it's toll on the brothers, like it did to all of us who were young in the late 70's, but Drac and his Fender Stratocaster are still holding it down... check him out from 5:35 to 6:00... brother still got some skills
Thanks Osan!!! Man these guys got off. Funk is played with Brass, Pounding bass and guitar shred. It is sad in today's world nobody understand this music. If they do they are obscure. LONG LIVE FUNK!!!
For those who think Slave is washed up don't ever forget they already been their done that, yeah I know they are not like the Police who can get back together after twenty five years and sell out every venue in an hour, but Slave just like The Bar Kays, Cameo ,Con Funk Shun, Dazz Band and the list goes on, made so many house parties, bbq's, clubs and radio stations rockin and those who were their to remember that era knows what im talkin about. Peace.
Preach. There were apparently two bands performing under the Slave banner, this one led by Drac (Mark Hicks) and the other led by Mark Adams and Danny Webster. There's a video here on YT of Adams' and Webster's version. This was more professionally performed and recorded. Adams was clearly playing in a dive, his best playing days behind him, but Adams is Slave, plain and simple. Without him, it's just another funk band. This isn't even close.
This am the SHIT!!! Mark Adams was a big influence on me in my early days of learning the bass. "YOU CAN SLIDE MY FINGER ON IT!" Today's shit just can't compare. The thing about funk that a lot of people don't get is that it's inherently very simple music, but the pocket is soooo tight, you can't help but move. If your head starts boppin' without you thinkin' about it, then it's FUNKY!
They inspired me and so many others to pick up the bass or guitar. The song was so accessible and the energy so pure. It is almost tantric . You go into a trance state. By the way, the audio is not synced with the video. Around 78 my band used to practice across the street from Steve's (fearless leader) mother's house in East Orange, NJ . We would drool when they unloaded the huge silver painted speaker cabinets off the truck. It's important for poor black kids to see success. Super heros.
If I'm correct, and I believe I am, the only original member of Slave in this video is guitarist Marc "Drac" Hicks (the guy in the cape), and I'm sorry for all the Drac loyalists out there, but the guitar was not the distinguishing element of their sound. Adams' bass and Arrington's vocals were.
Well, Mark Adams did admit that he was influenced by Larry Graham from the Sly & The Family Stone days & Graham is the pure legend & one of my favorites ("Release Yourself" is playin' on my computer now.) but he wasn't the only one..... But i'mma check da page.......
You're talking about Steve Arrington, who was singing with them. He's a minister in Kettering, OH. I can't recall the name of the church, I think something with Full of Love. They got older and started eating, I guess.
@PAMAROSHOUSE NOT STEVE A.......STEVE ARRINGTON just played Chgo on 2/5/2011 with his New Band. Wow! They were incredible! Steve sounds Fabulous. STEVE ARRINGTON - HOUSE OF BLUES CHGO. 4/9/2011
I didn't know that Mr. Mark had passed away.. He was a cool good lookin bro. as well. I had heard frm Drac he had HAD some issues but I won't elaborate on them outta respect for the both of them....
This is DRAC and his version of slave..He is the only original member in this video.. Music is a harsh business, Drac left slave after the stone jam album, and returned with the group in 1988..And now acts like he played in all the hits when he really didn't.. The group kinda fazed him out, thats why he left.. In the late 70's and early 80's music was going in a different direction. He still wanted to do rock solo's....If anything Mark Adams, Danny Webster, and Floyd Miller should be doing this.
I totally agree with you. I used this example. Why are The New Kids on the block playing Large arenas and the New Edition is playing night Clubs.?? They(White Fans) support their artist while we say things like"They're washed up" Truly sad........
@ohioplayer There will always be SLAVE after Steve A., but not at their best, They were monsters when he was there singing lead. Steve Arrington is back now with his own band (THEY ARE HOT) ON TOUR for 2011.
Yo, who's the mad bassist with the unreal groove and tight lines? Check out the Robert Wilson (Gap Band) reference pulled off at 0:42 Slammed it! I just cant stop replaying the 1st minute over and over just for the stone cold ass whoopin' this band administers on the intro.
I'm fighting tonight in Virginia Beach at the 5th Street Stage just in case you live in Virginia or close by. 205lb class. Come see me after the fights are over and you and I can go to work on those breaks. Oh and by the way, nothing personal. Oh and great channel too. Is definitely doesn't reflect the mindset you are directing towards myself right now. Maybe after you "whip my ass", we can become the brothers we are suppose to be. Hotep
2black2day: I can understand why you feel the way that you do, and I can agree. If and only "if" this is true then something needs to be done to help the brother. The group is still tight though. To the person that refers the solo to the original cut: I think that drac has grown musically since that time.
@ohioplayer, yea, mabe so, but NOBODY can sing "Watching You" & "Touch of Love" BUT Steve! Keith Sweat did an ok job with that remake but Steve IS THE MAN!
LMAO!! You've got me laughing now! No pppprrroooobbblem man. Lol. Can we be brothers now cause your channel is banging. My cousin likes it too. Be easy my brother. Waadu.
@zzzddd7 agreed, some of his chops aren't as sharp as 30 years ago! i don't doubt that some can outplay him now! i'm just saying there's always a balance!! and a lot of the younger players now have had more gadgets that have given them ops for more finger and wrist control as a daily living function, not just with playing, like we did back in the day! but, ya gotta give Drac his props! it's the silence in between the beats that brings on the funk! MAA'T ONE LOVE!!!
U GOT THAT RIGHT !!!!! mssquirrely !!!! We gotta school em cause SOME of them just totally mess up a classic by rapping over it. I try to keep an open mind but i don't think it's meant for me TO get it. Damm,,,,can't hear the guitar good. "Heavy D in da House..................
Lol, I fight for a living bro and damn sure aint hard to find. Come to Faglier's Kempo Karate school on Peach Orchard rd. Augusta Ga mon-fiday all day, everyday. Ask for Pharoah. You "might" beat the breaks off me but I assure you that your breaks won't work to good afterwards either. You came after me for my "joking" opinion on Slave to my cousin. Joke as in, I didn't really mean it. I wish Drac and Slave all the best. They are legends! You took the shit personal AND too far. So bring it!
None of us are hating, dude. If you know anything about the original Slave, this is actually sad. R. I. P. Drac (and I posted here before he died, you can still find it) but none of the bands out there calling themselves any version of Slave measure up. Period. I wouldn't check any of them out for free. You want to perform their songs, fine. But don't use the name Slave.
yeah Drac (RIP) has had too many line-up changes for my taste. Tell it BWizer. Check Drac at 4:19, 4:27, 4:40 and 5:12 and tell me he ain't getting down. Sounds like 1977 to me... and I know because I was there. Long Live Slave, Drac and the Fungk. Give credit where it's due.
@zzzddd7 he still funks it up! sheeiit, i see a lot players that are healthy and still can't touch Drac! he's done well considering what he's been through!!! he's obviously doin something right, cause he's workin with george clinton on some new stuff!
if anybody knows , what happened to steve washington ? does he have a website??? how did drac put on so much weight ?// maybe some bands can;t comeback . where's danny webster ??

i am white and this is one of my fav albums/groups from my high school days!!
I grew up when we had bands that played musical instruments. Slave is one of the funkiest bands ever! Mark Adams...whoa!!!!!!!
Nelson D. Coy

I've been looking for this video for 3 years thanks for reposting it🤝
R.I.P. Mark Drac Hicks... Gone today but he'll never be forgotten...
Absolutely 😊😊😊
Proud and happy to say, Amazing masterful talented musical groups from the "Gem City", Dayton, Ohio! The Ohio Players, Zapp featuring Roger, Heatwave, Slave, Sun, Shirley Murdock, Steve Arrington, Mel'sa Morgan and of course, Lakeside.

Where have all the great bands gone?!
When musicians could actually play their instruments.
LOVE THIS...THANKS:D
Regardless to the weight gain, they were jamming and they sounded good to me!!
A party, birthday or otherwise was NOT jumping until "Slide" was played at least once. It is so good to see the old schoolers out there showing the young ones how its done!!
Drac was a teenager when this song came out, wow time flies...
We have lost two Slave Legends within 3 months
R.I.P Mark L. Adams
R.I.P. Mark F. Hicks

If there ever was an axe slinger it was Mark "Drac" Hicks. R.I.P. Your music will be missed.
The original bass player was Mark Adams if I rember right. This group was another of Dayton Ohio's finest in the late 70's!!!
True that Windbassplayer. I too, a fellow bassist, was happy to learn this one!!!
The guys can jam. I listened to this song when I was teenager. Watching them still jam like this makes me proud to be from my generation the musicians of today pale in comparison.

Yes, his last name was arrington. He is now a minister in Kettering, OH.
When this song came out it blew minds....heavy ro9ck guitar with a baddass funk groove....

@stevi1955 Lakeside launched their recording career from Seattle---when they got here they were called the "Ohio Lakeside Express"
This is DRAC and his version of slave..He is the only original member in this video.. Yo Blood! I really think, That really was, Drac!! He just got bigger, but That Really is Drac!! (Mark Hicks)!
Beleive it or not, The big dude with the cape is Drac.

I totally agree with you. I used this example. Why are The New Kids on the block playing Large arenas and the New Edition is playing night Clubs.?? They(White Fans) support their artist while we say things like"They're washed up" Truly sad........
5:32 Bad Ass Mad Skills
the same reason New kids on the block are selling out the Am. Airlines Arena and The New Edition's playing night clubs... Loyalty from their fans...
@ohioplayer There will always be SLAVE after Steve A., but not at their best, They were monsters when he was there singing lead. Steve Arrington is back now with his own band (THEY ARE HOT) ON TOUR for 2011.

@maxfrenzi Totally agree, that was lóóóng before van Halen/Malmsteen etc. etc.
Just found about Drac Webster R.I.P.
2black2day:
I can understand why you feel the way that you do, and I can agree. If and only "if" this is true then something needs to be done to help the brother. The group is still tight though. To the person that refers the solo to the original cut: I think that drac has grown musically since that time.
@sda1225 There was a Slave BEFORE Steve, so yes, there can be a Slave without him, especially when he didn't want to tour.
Check Drac at 5:35... Brotha's got some serious skills.
Waadu.
@barefootpoet24 Steve Arrington w/ band will be in NYC May 30th. Pier 40...
Hendrix would have been proud!
True that!!!!!!!!
don't forget Keith Harrison and Faze-O!
Long live Slave and the fungk. Check out Drac on Slave - Volcano Rupture on youtube
"Snack"...that's funny as hell 86pimp3!!!
How many original members in this version
like some boxers, some groups dont know when to quit
Where's Mark Adams and Danny Webster? Slave is still the king of fungk
@duart310 James Brown was the first "funkateer", even by George Clinton's admission. James taught George about funkin' on "the one".
Is that Steve singing or someone else? Doesn't sound like Steve Arrington but Slave ws the ish.
can you post the one from the album
Dude looks like everybody's drunk uncle :)
So that's not Mark Adams playing bass for slave in this video?
yeah Drac (RIP) has had too many line-up changes for my taste. Adams, Webster, and Arrington were such an integral part of the identity of Slave. when Adams passed that pretty much sealed it for me. i would pay to see Arrington, Starleana Young, Danny Webster, and Steve Washington get together, which is highly unlikely. so to me its pretty much official.
this is not the original lineup, at least they got the bass line right
How do you know Steve Washington is in NJ picking up cans? Doesn't make sense
This is NOT slave! Where is Steve and Mark? I agree with
kickazz11. and yes I KNOW Drac is one the originals
Can someone tell me since when did mark adams die and why wasn't it on the news?
u got the vid.i got the move.sir.month ago id asked u the name of the for it! whats the name of the dance/move for that song SÖR? in old school time they dont went on dance floor and orgasm ..like the way it used to be now..back in time they had class!even when they move/groove.so pleas, what is the neme of the move to this song SÖR?im sure if u upload slave u know the deal.huh?
