I did this five years ago. Still going strong, but now I have about fifty titles with two dozen authors. Still a sole proprietor.

who do you use for a book distributor for printing your books? Do you need to register with the company as a publisher?
Yeah, she left out some of the best information. The ones of us who deal with this and have for years, already know what she told us. Tell us about marketing, getting our books into blook club lists. Doing these things was easy once upon a time, but do not seem to be so much anymore. We need to know where we can find reasonably priced editors who do good work, etc.
Just to expand on this video: There is a difference between creating an imprint and forming a company.
For example, you can create an imprint for free to disguise the fact you're self-published without incorporating. You can also deduct business expenses (in the U.S.) without incorporating.
If you want to shield your personal possessions from, say, a libel suit, then you must form a company that will bear the brunt of any losses in that area.
Otherwise, you don't need to worry about forming a company until you have a significant amount of income that can't be offset solely by business expenses. One consultant on the Author Biz podcast set that level at about $75,000 a year in sales.
How would one create an imprint without creating a company? Every where I look says you need to create a company to even have an imprint. Help understanding would be great

I really like these shaelin/reedsy videos and I've watched many, learned a lot, and haven't made a single wise crack--until now: Don't set up a company name with a made up word ... like Reedsy?
Well, she only said maybe shy away from, and gave a valid reason. I agree with her in principle. But yeah, a hint of irony there. ;-)
