Two tips for bucket toilets. Put it in a milk crate to avoid tipping disaster. A urine hat like the ones placed on a toilet in the hospital to measure pee output to make an inexpensive urine diverter. It has a built in spout and I use a fabric softener bottle to collect for later disposal. I’ll check out the horse pellets. I have a Promaster so don’t have such a space issue. Good info and no nonsense presentation. I’ll suscribe.
I tried many of these and found the most comfortable and convenient is a well-made bedpan. Can actually place it on any surface or seat and sit normally on it. I line it with a plastic bag and place a puppy pad or bed pan absorbent liner in that with a little cat litter. The edges of the bag come up and over the actual bedpan seat which makes it perfect for closing up if you are not going to dispose of it right away. If you use deeper kitty litter you can scoop clean it out in between changes. Some bedpans come with a small lid that you can place over the opening as well.
I realize it's for Nomads, but for many people traveling with loved ones have had to use forms of these for health issues.!!! This has given me even more ammunition to deal with the problem.

I watched this video months ago and decided to try it. I just decided to popped back over to comment on the fact that we’ve been using this method for many months now and it is the best way to use a toilet in a van or camper. My husband was skeptical so we tested it in our house bathroom for a week and knew we would always use this method. The size or the pot/bucket is all a personal preference for your space and size, but the pellets are a game changer. Thx for sharing.

I've just found your channel and it's GREAT. I'm a new subscriber. I own a Citroen Berlingo Micro Camper. Self-built naturally! I designed it to work in any weather, barring deep snow. Scotland is notorious for our poor weather. It sleeps my wife and I perfectly and we can even sit at a table and have a meal or play backgammon/dominoes while the wind batters us outside. We have a FIAMMA Bi-Pot 30 built into our seat closest to the rear door (it's only 30cm high). We have a 15L 12v fridge/freezer, single burner gas stove, tap + basin with running water, 110AH battery, TV and Internet and cupboards (one of which is designated as a cocktail bar). We can also enter/exit through both the side and back doors as the seats are in an L shape. It's a mighty package in a tiny space, but we love it. I should mention, when we have our blackout screens on the windows we can park anywhere. It's our cloak of invisibility. Yay, for micro campers...

@Bill Sbac good question. It really is not a struggle for me. It might be for others, but I find it very convenient and the best solution for my needs. I also don’t have the kind of space necessary for that. Even if I had a bigger van, I am not sure I would want to use space for a big toilet and lug around a bigger tank that I’d have to empty. This is easy, compact, light. Just an option that I find works. Everyone has to do what feels like the best option for them of course. Thanks for the great question. Hope this clarifies😊

I have a method I have never seen mentioned. I use a tall plastic cereal container, with a lid, and line it. I sandwich it between two storage cubes I have. When done, put the lid on the cereal container and dispose when appropriate. I have never, LOL, missed. Works for me.
Thank you so much for sharing honestly. As a woman, I camp out of my SUV and I have tried most of what you shared without success because there is just not enough room! I have discovered that if you use a larger BEDPAN placed on the car seat with a plastic bag covering the bedpan and a cut up puppy pad/pads inside you will have an excellent camp toilet! The only drawback is that it can’t handle more than 2-3 times. (I also put a puppy pad over the car seat and under the bedpan.)
I wish I had known of the bed pan idea (I actually have a vintage one) before I went car camping. Urinating during the night, in a urinal, urban boondocking, requires athletic abilities I forgot I had.
When I was growing up in Alaska we had no plumbing. #2 was taken care of in a good old fashioned outhouse. #1 was done where ever during the day, but at night we didn't want to go outside when it was cold. The 'chamber" was a metal coffee can with a metal lid. The guys did what guys do and us girls squatted over the can. It was dumped every morning. It actually worked really well. I think that we tend to overthink things sometimes, but I can see where #2 could be an issue if you don't have an outhouse or privacy and you can't get outside. (Going inside of a vehicle in a stealth situation, for instance.) Or if there are little kids involved. I really love the horse bedding idea. Absolutely getting that.
Great selection of options. Appreciate the info. Also, thanks for the SUV RVing shout out. Tristan produces excellent, informative content and seems like a genuinely good guy.
A tip if you want to get rid of the smell real quick. This is not meant to be funny but, just strike a match or two and extinguish them and wave the burnt smoke about then the smell is gone completely in a few seconds due to the burnt sulphur from the match head neutralizing the smell from the poop.I saw this on a science TV programme years ago and it definitely works, try it,by the way,you won't explode Lol
I use a 3 gallon bucket and put foam for water pipes to not freeze on the rim. Put the bag over the foam. Use biogradeable cat litter. Never had a problem. The bucket fits under my camping cot in my minivan. I clean out my potty daily.

Great topic! Great video! We were traveling recently in our minivan, which, of course, has a bucket system that is always ready. We stopped for lunch at a fast food restaurant that only had the drive through open, no rest rooms available. When we finished we wanted to use a toilet before getting back on the interstate as we were in a very busy location. We simply pulled the van curtains and used our own facilities. Emptied later when we found an appropriate dump station. Sooo, you don't have to be a nomad to have an emergency plan. Such peace of mind to always prepared.
Uh oh, you put that shovel on top of your cutting board! 😳😲.....oh and now your little IKEA tub toilet!!!! 😃😂😂🤣😁...seriously now, thank you for your ideas! I’m going to try the horse bedding.
oh lord - so good - love the videos - IF money rolls in the battery powered toilette that auto seals and vacuums the air out THEN makes a tidy pouch that is air tight and can be thrown in any trash - NOT cheap - but superior
Great video and very well presented 👍 I landed up here as I’m researching ideas for mini campers and the loo is obviously an important topic. You really did cover this so well, and really appreciated all the various options you shared - well done and thanks for sharing 👍👍
I used to be a truck driver and after succumbing to a truck stop buffet, I had make an emergency stop at a rest area. Let me tell you as good as you may be at pinching and holding back, it doesn't work to good when you are getting out of a semi tractor. What a mess. My solution was to get a plastic detergent container that had good fit on the lid. Standard wastebasket liners worked great.
Great ideas and well-presented. I have a foldable toilet that has a comfortable sitting lid and cover. It folds down to about 2 inches in height then 12x12. It can be used as a hassock or small seat. I double bag any toilet bags from experience. I am going to try the horse pellets. Thank you. More recently I have begun to use a female urinal with a jug for urine.
Great video, thanks for doing this. I use the pine pellets, dampened, mixed with unsented clumping cat litter, from Tractor Supply for my cats' littler box, and they work great. They do tend to get dusty, tho. I could see getting the more perfumed cat litter to mix as an option, also. I'm to the age where I have to get up several times a night, so this is very important for me to have this option! Thanks again!
New subscriber from Florida and gearing up in living van life in three weeks and my husband and myself were retired military couple. Decided to sell our 5 acre traditional home in Arlington Washington, gorgeous super private place but decided to sell and moved to San Antonio Texas for a year and in Orlando for year and a half finally decided last month it is time to do van life. Thank You so much , I stumbled upon your channel watched then decided to follow your vlog.🙏🏻
I actually do exactly that. I'm in a Ford E350 with a sifting litter box for my kitty and a luggable loo with a bag that it gets emptied into. I then use that for #2 with a canning funnel and laundry detergent jug for a urine diverter with a bathtub plug in the funnel to seal it. There is no smell and I get the added economy of using the pellets for kitty and myself. The bag of pellets get dumped into one of those cat food containers on wheels which I use in my van as a table.
Great Potty Talk. Amazing this subject is such a hit on TH-cam. I just spoke to a potential nomad and this subject came up. Your video was very informative for new nomads and to seasoned nomads who want to upgrade their current system. The horse beding pellets work very well too. A+ video.,
Thank you for this open and useful information. I'm in a house but recently experienced our plumbing backing up due to flooding. I'm going to look into options for a backup toileting system for plumbing emergencies.
I feel like your ideas are good for not just van life but when/if the plumbing goes down! While I have a sturdy bedside commode for medical reasons, I started to wonder what else I could do if a true life, shelter in place emergency happened and I am amazed by all the options you presented in your video! I'm definitely watching this again!

Important to mention TOILET PAPER and CAT HOLES. You must pack out you used tp 🧻 when utilizing the cat hole system. I use the biodegradable dog poop bags to store the used tp until able to dispose of it properly. DO NOT LEAVE TP AT CAT HOLE SITE! 🌿
So true, Hope Springs a Turtle. And no burning of the TP as well. SHeesh. And of course there is always the option of using sticks, rocks, leaves or snow for the initial wipings and then moving on to smaller TP amounts for the finish. No need to make massive white mits for this process. Save a tree.
@@returningtoearthtv8836 I’ve actually stated using a portable bidet for number two. Much cleaner, no packing out of poopy tp. Highly recommend. I still use tp for peeing.
I use horse bedding pellets in my cat's litter box for years now. It works great in a sifting litter box and I dump everything into a bag in my luggable loo. Inside my luggable loo I also have a canning funnel in a laundry detergent jug for a urine diverter and use the bag with the betting pellets for #2. I do this in my standard size Ford E350 cargo van. You can't smell anything but the scent of fresh pine.
The horse pellets were such a great find when I rescued a litter of kittens. Now if I ever need to use litter I use the same pellets. Such a money saver! They sell the same stuff for cats in much smaller bags at much higher price points. What a brilliant way to repurpose them for our use.
I happen to have a Nature's Head, and was looking for an alternative to the coco core. I'm going to look for horse pellets at Fleet Farm. I don't see why this wouldn't work! Great tip!
I was waiting for you to mention the kitty litter and horse pellets! I'm so glad you did, because if I went put in a van like you have, that would indeed be my first choice. Thank you for this great informative video.
great discussion Dee. I believe the toilet issue is the most important problem for nomads. Basically, when you gotta go, you gotta go. I have struggled finding a Lugabaloo style toilet that is 6 to 12 inches lower. Is the 3 gallon buck shorter than the 5 gallon bucket. I am 6'1 so a 5 gallon does not give me enough ceiling clearance in some campers or vans.
Yes. The 3 gallon is shorter. I am not sure by how many inches, maybe by about 6 inches. I know it was just barely unable to fit under my bench which is 8 inches high.
Thanks MUCH! You certainly have tried a LOT off solutions and the horse pellets are new approach that seems to work well. All the BEST to you and your adventures! Cheers ! :)
As a truck driver I used a zip lock baggie while leaning against the side of the bed. I placed a flat Rubbermaid type flat bin with cat litter below in case of dribbles. Then I scooped cat litter into the baggie to make a solid I could close up and put in the trash until out next stop. My husband used a Gatorade bottle; same idea. The flat container of cat litter was then sealed up and slid under the bed until next time.
During this entire video, the "Let's all poop in a bucket" song was playing in my head😏 I loved it. So many options, thank you. I've personally used folgers (or different big plastic coffee) containers and the pine pellets. Tops fit well, usually
Thanks for your videos! This is the first I've heard of horse pellets. Although I haven't tried it out yet, the TRIPTIPS Portable Folding Toilet Travel Toilet was a recent purchase. Folds up incredibly small (12.2"x2.4") to store and travel but sturdy and small-bucket sized when set up. (Maximum weight is 400 lbs). Also "Poo Powder" by CleanWaste will "gel" liquids. I'd recommend using sturdier bags.
@@LadyBugout yeah no problem been using it for a while and I love it, I buy these small trash bags from Walmart that are lavender scented and they clip in perfectly
I got a wide mouth, plastic jar with lid from Dollar Tree. I kneel down in my van and slide it underneath me from the back. Works perfect for potty, but not poo. You can just screw the lid back on until you are at a place where you can dump it discretely in nature.

I agree. We do tend to overthink things. I just figure the simpler the set up. The easier for me to fix if something goes wrong😝
@@LadyBugout Definitely!
You are my new favorite TH-cam Person. Thank you!
Thank you so much Mary! Very kind of you to say that. 😌
Thanks for talking about this, no one ever does.
You are welcome 🤗
Great selection of options. Appreciate the info.
Also, thanks for the SUV RVing shout out. Tristan produces excellent, informative content and seems like a genuinely good guy.
Thank you! I agree with your assessment on Tristan at SUV RVing☺️
"It is an option, it's a very doo-doo-able option..." 😄😉
😂😂😂😂
I laughed at that too!
We have the same humor as I said that out loud during her video 🤣
A tip if you want to get rid of the smell real quick. This is not meant to be funny but, just strike a match or two and extinguish them and wave the burnt smoke about then the smell is gone completely in a few seconds due to the burnt sulphur from the match head neutralizing the smell from the poop.I saw this on a science TV programme years ago and it definitely works, try it,by the way,you won't explode Lol
😂Love it...thanks for the suggestion!
Great video, you addressed a topic that is kind of "hush, hush", yet we all have to "go" - thank you
Semper Fi
Thank you Pedro! Yes, it is something we all do and one of the first questions I get asked. I wanted to show that there are all kinds of options😝
I use a 3 gallon bucket and put foam for water pipes to not freeze on the rim. Put the bag over the foam. Use biogradeable cat litter. Never had a problem. The bucket fits under my camping cot in my minivan. I clean out my potty daily.
That’s great!
what a conversation ,but much needed in real off grid and van life
Yes, it is good to know for sure!!!😛
@@LadyBugout hard to believe but l was in 5th grade before I new a toilet could be inside the house. our country school house had a out door out house one for the boys and a two holer for the girls. we moved to a different world my 5th grade year.1971 Las Vagas
I've wondered about horse pellets or cedar shavings. Thanks for sharing your personal experience! You have to be a little graphic to cover the gory details, but that's what people need!
Thank you Cathy! I appreciate it.😊
Great topic!
Nice!!! That’s awesome that you have your system worked out🤗
Uh oh, you put that shovel on top of your cutting board! 😳😲.....oh and now your little IKEA tub toilet!!!! 😃😂😂🤣😁...seriously now, thank you for your ideas! I’m going to try the horse bedding.
Thanks for watching!
oh lord - so good - love the videos - IF money rolls in the battery powered toilette that auto seals and vacuums the air out THEN makes a tidy pouch that is air tight and can be thrown in any trash - NOT cheap - but superior
I’ve seen those! Interesting to think about for sure!!!
Great video and very well presented 👍 I landed up here as I’m researching ideas for mini campers and the loo is obviously an important topic. You really did cover this so well, and really appreciated all the various options you shared - well done and thanks for sharing 👍👍
You are welcome! Glad it was helpful☺️
Great tip!
Excellent choices! ☺️
Yes, I saw that foldable seat cut for a toilet on SUV RVing.
Yes! He does a great job!
You are so welcome!☺️
New subscriber from Florida and gearing up in living van life in three weeks and my husband and myself were retired military couple. Decided to sell our 5 acre traditional home in Arlington Washington, gorgeous super private place but decided to sell and moved to San Antonio Texas for a year and in Orlando for year and a half finally decided last month it is time to do van life. Thank You so much , I stumbled upon your channel watched then decided to follow your vlog.🙏🏻
Thank you so much. Welcome to the channel☺️☺️☺️
I agree about the wood pellets... they work great as kitty litter too, so much so that I would use it if I travelled with my cat in a camper or van.
That’s good to know!☺️
As a crazy 😜 cat 🐈 lady 👩. Wood pellets are the best cat litter!
You are so witty going through this video 😆. It's a topic that many people just don't talk about and it is important so thank you. Pam
Thank you Pam! Glad you liked it😜
Great Potty Talk. Amazing this subject is such a hit on TH-cam. I just spoke to a potential nomad and this subject came up. Your video was very informative for new nomads and to seasoned nomads who want to upgrade their current system. The horse beding pellets work very well too. A+ video.,
Thank you Fe☺️
😁 We all go every day, thank you so much for this video, when you're not at home 😁
Hahah yep...thanks for watching😜
Thank you for this open and useful information. I'm in a house but recently experienced our plumbing backing up due to flooding. I'm going to look into options for a backup toileting system for plumbing emergencies.
Glad it was useful🤗
I have been watching videos for yrs. I never thought about the kiddie toilet seat. TY.
Thank you Nancy! That means a lot.
I think so too! Many of the VanLife methods are transferable to such cases.☺️
👋💃🐞Best video on this conversation for a van dweller I've heard ! You discussed several options & a person can choose whats best for their personal preference! Great vide ! 🤗🙂Thank you for sharing! Be safe/Be Happy & I'll see you on the next video 🙂
I’m glad it was helpful 🤗
@@returningtoearthtv8836 Sticks & rocks? 😖 Seriously? Call me a pansy if u want, but no sticks OR rocks on this booty! No 'butts' about it! 🤓
I have had some horrifying results with biodegradable bags not making it long enough to be helpful.
@@returningtoearthtv8836 Wait, SNOW!? I am not using snow to wipe my bum. 🥶
Sounds like it gets the job done! 🤗😎
Experience is the best credential for teaching.
🤗
The horse pellets were such a great find when I rescued a litter of kittens. Now if I ever need to use litter I use the same pellets. Such a money saver! They sell the same stuff for cats in much smaller bags at much higher price points. What a brilliant way to repurpose them for our use.
That’s awesome!
I LOVE YOU! i have learned sooo much from you too. thanks for answering all the topics nobody else speaks of :)
Thank you! It means a lot to me for you to say that ♥️🐞♥️
I’ve been using a toddler toilet in my suv for 4yrs now. It’s always cleaner than a gas station!
Good idea🤗
I thought about that too.
great idea about the Horse Bedding Pellets, thanks!
You are welcome!☺️
best info ever!! thank you for making this, it is so hard to make choices and you laid them all out for us!
You are so very welcome!
Thanks! Nice presentation. Cool about the horse pellets
Thank you Geoffrey! 🤗
You can use some pipe insulation or a pool noodle to make the rim of a bucket or bin more comfortable.
Great suggestion! 😊
Just watched whole video for the second time! Thank you!
Thanks Steve! I’m hoping it’s helpful 🤗
I binged and watched all your videos yesterday and this morning. Very good content. Subscribed today💖

I love your IKEA bucket and horse breeding pellets. Your a genius.
That is all for me.
Awww thank you Kylie! That makes my day!🐞🚗💃🏻
Horse pellets! Thank you so much for all of these options and tips. Great vid!
Thank you ☺️
Thank you for "the talk". The horse pellets sound like a great idea, even for a Nature's Head composting toilet.
Heheheheh. Thanks Shirene! ☺️
I happen to have a Nature's Head, and was looking for an alternative to the coco core. I'm going to look for horse pellets at Fleet Farm. I don't see why this wouldn't work! Great tip!
Thankyou for your input. You make it seem alot more simple !
Thanks Julie! Sometimes the simpler the better🤗
Fantastic video...Horse Bedding Pellets...great idea...Thank You. Safe & Happy travels.
Thank you Rebecca!
I was waiting for you to mention the kitty litter and horse pellets! I'm so glad you did, because if I went put in a van like you have, that would indeed be my first choice. Thank you for this great informative video.
Thank you for watching Tory!
Thank you this is the best video I have seen on toilets in a van...
You are very welcome! Thank YOU for watching!
great discussion Dee.
Thanks. The chapter menu is a grate idea.
Thanks☺️🤗
Thanks MUCH! You certainly have tried a LOT off solutions and the horse pellets are new approach that seems to work well. All the BEST to you and your adventures! Cheers ! :)
Thank you, Marty! Cheers to you too☺️
Thank you! Love the Ikea compost bin. Small, but not too small,
Thank you Dawn!😊
@@LadyBugout It's perfect. Bought three this weekend - two for storage and one for my new bathroom solution. Thanks so much Dee!
@@bevuntethered you go girl!!!
Thank you for this! Needed it big time. About to move into my SUV and yeah, space is quite limited, but I need a toilet, so this was very helpful.
I’m glad it was helpful, Kirsten🤗
More and better info than I ever thought I would need. The horse pellets tip is ingenious. Thank you.
Thank you Vicky 🤗
Much needed discussion! It is a task that must be done. Very good options! Thanks so much for sharing! ✌🏻❤️🙏🏻
Yes! Thanks for watching, Tina!
Best video on toilets. Super helpful, thanks!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Very thorough review of options. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Carmie!☺️
As a truck driver I used a zip lock baggie while leaning against the side of the bed. I placed a flat Rubbermaid type flat bin with cat litter below in case of dribbles. Then I scooped cat litter into the baggie to make a solid I could close up and put in the trash until out next stop. My husband used a Gatorade bottle; same idea. The flat container of cat litter was then sealed up and slid under the bed until next time.
Great tips! 😌
Great help! Specially with the horse pellet bedding idea. And that little container from IKEA. Just the right size!
Thanks Carole ☺️
Yup those horse pellet things are a great idea!
🤗🤗🤗
TO ME , THE HORSE PELLETS ARE THE BEST .
Excellent solutions for our #2. Very very helpful. Thank you.
I’m glad it was helpful. 🤗
During this entire video, the "Let's all poop in a bucket" song was playing in my head😏
I loved it. So many options, thank you. I've personally used folgers (or different big plastic coffee) containers and the pine pellets. Tops fit well, usually
Yes! I used a coffee container in Bolivia. They are awesome 🤩
That's what I use since homeless living out of car after house fire before Christmas lost everything
This is great, not many talk about this, even when their doing a tour, thank you.
Thanks☺️
@@LadyBugout You're welcome!
Good to see that exploring options is a normal part of finding the right fit for you. Definitely not one size fits all🤗
Yes, I watch a lot of videos as well😜😝🤗
My first potty experience was in a cardboard box in my car. Now a use 3.5 bucket with a seat. Thank you for such valuable info.
Wow! Nice. Thanks for watching☺️
Loving these videos Dee, so informative with realistic options
I’m so glad they are helpful Matt! 😊
I appreciate your trial and trial and another trial to find the perfect fit. Thank you for sharing.
You are very welcome, Johnette! 🤗
Yes! Thanks for the tip!
A lengthwise sliced pool noodle trimmed to fit around the top of any sized container makes a comfortable seat.
Thank you for the suggestion😊
Walmart has an amazing Ozark trail fold out toilet it's easy to store and folds out high enough for it to be comfortable to sit on properly
Thanks for the suggestion😊
@@LadyBugout yeah no problem been using it for a while and I love it, I buy these small trash bags from Walmart that are lavender scented and they clip in perfectly
I got a wide mouth, plastic jar with lid from Dollar Tree. I kneel down in my van and slide it underneath me from the back. Works perfect for potty, but not poo. You can just screw the lid back on until you are at a place where you can dump it discretely in nature.
Yep!!!
