    From Stravinsky - Discoveries and Memories by Robert Craft (2013) : "Gould was an enemy of Stravinsky's music [as he makes clear in his intro here], and even turned down a request from CBS New York to the record the Capriccio with its composer. Stravinsky never knew this but was fascinated by Gould both as a musician and person. On their first meeting in 1960 an affinity between the composer and the pianist was immediately manifest, which still perplexes me, as does Stravinsky's remark, "He is very handsome" - a word I never heard the composer use in reference to any other male. The two men breakfasted together in our Toronto hotel in 1962 and later sat and chatted as I [Craft] rehearsed the orchestra, the pianist soliciting the composer's opinions on such unlikely topics as the chamber music of Max Reger." It was a foregone conclusion that if there had to be a Stravinsky piece in CBC's series, Gould would select one without a piano part!

      I've read the book, really enjoyed it. The animosity towards Stravinsky is quite bizarre, then again one could say the same about him lambasting some Mozart pieces, etc. This is just Gould being Gould...

      Piano’s Blox World - you can make a case that Schoenberg is to Stravinsky as Bach is to Haendel. You could view Schoenburg and Bach as pure and Stravinsky and Haendel as adulterated. Look at Haendel’s keyboard fugues, the way they “cheat,“ and look at Stravinsky‘s use of 12-tone techniques to evoke angst alone, as did Bernstein. Not my views - just a projection on my personal Gould!

    Can we take a moment to appreciate that, for all his stated loathing of Stravinsky's music, Gould still made time to feature it on a program he hosted? Even if he wasn't personally responsible for the choice of composer and piece, does anyone doubt he could have stomped his foot and had it excised if he really wanted to?

    Not sure Glenn actually has a distaste for Stravinsky, nor Mozart for that matter. Remember, everything he recorded was put out to get some kind of reaction, from his recordings to these talks. You can’t delve so deeply into a piece or subject if you don’t have an interest in it. Love this man!

    • @charlotterose6724
      @charlotterose6724 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't figure out his Mozart, but upon extensive reading, he did have a distaste for Stravinsky (who apparently ADORED Gould, calling him "the handsomest man he had ever seen). Stravinsky was in Toronto in the twilight of his life, and had gone out to dinner with Gould and a friend, courting Gould to play his piano concerto. Gould dodged the subject and left before dessert, pleading illness. His friendapparently lost it on him, when Gould said, "I handled that well, don't you think?"
