Later, when discover Booktube and this big world, I realize that it was in a big mistake to acquire someone else thoughts without thinking of what makes me get fun while reading a book. Love your video and now I have another ideas of annotating 👌

Poking fun at spicy scene word choices, a meme a line reminded me of, etc. I accepted I'm not always going to come across as an intellectual in my annotations and that's okay, because I'm having fun with it!
I tend to annotate books when I am rereading them, I try to reread a book every 2 months or so and I love filling up my favorites with my annotations. I tend to just use a black pen, color coding is too stressful for me and I don’t cate for sticky tabs, but i just underline with my black pen and write my thoughts in the margins!
The green one is seriously the best idea ever! Sometimes I don’t get references and this is a great way to understand Jen and put it right there in the margins
your annotated books look so stunning! honestly, I think I started annotating books because I saw you doing it and just told myself to just go with it, so thank you for that.
From a 43 yo bookworm- thank you for introducing me to the wonders of this idea! I read very quickly, but sadly “dump” the book info out of my memory banks very quickly as well. It’s been a huge irritation to me for years. I think doing this will help with that and be fun as well. Thanks again!
I've always been a "DON'T TOUCH THE BOOK" person too and kind of trying to keep them perfect, but you reinforced what I've been thinking for a few weeks about anotations as a way of telling stories. The major reason that changed my mind was bc now my books are filled with humidity and there's no going back for that lmao but it can be beautiful as well depending on how you see it. Besides that, you inspire me so much, you transmit such an incredible peace, i really love your channel
Dude when did the comment section become my new teacher?? You guys have taught me so much about literature and definitions plus tips in like five minutes. This video was also SO informative, I was talking with a professor and they sent me over to your channel. I'm impressed!
17:35 For highlighters, I use the mildliners by zebra and unless you press hard or go over it the text a lot they don’t bleed through thin pages they do ghost through a little ( where you can slightly see the color through the page) but they don’t bleed though.
I don’t really like annotating too much because to me it feels like when you’re studying and you highlight a whole assignment (which defeats the purpose lol), but I’m planning on starting “The Tale of Genji” and I think annotations could be super helpful since it’s massive and super old!
I’ve just started annotating and I LOVE it!! During the summer after a pretty terrible school year bec of being pretty much broken and betrayed by what I thought was a real friend I was just so unnecessarily stressed and anxious for no reason at all- I saw lots of people on tik tok showing off their annotated books and I thought it looked fun plus I used to love reading and really needed a distraction from the mental state I was in , and I didn’t know how to start at all. I watched loads of videos and yours finally gave me the starting points I needed, and I started annotating a book I’ve read before which btw turned out to be such a helpful thing to do- when u start annotating u focus so much on the actual annotating bec u don’t know how to do it than the actual story so if u annotate a story u already know what happens it gives u the time to actually focus on HOW to annotate or else u don’t normally understand the story as quickly bec ur not focusing on it as much, after annotating a book I’ve already read I pretty much got the “way” I guess of how I want to do it and then I began annotating new books no regrets at all and I feel so happy doing it too which was the main goal 💕
I love how detailed this is! Made me ease into annotating, been wanting to do it but my anxiety to ruin my books kept saying otherwise. Glad to have found you, Isabella! 💜
i love annotating in my books, is like they are part of me in the instant i put a highlight on the pages. is more like personal then everything. and i loved the video, thanks for sharing your thoutghs!!!!
i just had a wonderful thought. Imagine Bella as an ELA teacher! Bella, if you're reading this, I would love to be your student, not saying "you have to be an english teacher" just that if you were, your class would be so fun
I started annotating with The Picture of Dorian Gray. In fact it started because English isn't my main language so I only used it for traduction. But that book is SO SAVAGE that I couldn't stop myself from annotating. TIP FOR BEGINNERS: use pencil instead of pen so you can erase it if you want to sell it. I also used symbols and braquets in the sides to express feelings (heart, :(, and so).
For highlighters that don’t go through the page, I recommend erasable friction ones because the ink doesn’t sink into the page. I don’t know how long lasting they are, but they’ve worked well for me
I love love love annotating books! I've only just recently started, so there are very few books with annotations, but I find I remember more and have a deeper enjoyment since I'm forced to slow down
I love how you picked the picture of dorian gray to show us examples :D I literally started reading it today and I’m tabbing every single page 🥲 it’s just SO good 😫 I’ve been annotating my books since I was in elementary school and it’s honestly really fun and enhances the reading experience so much. I wish I could read other people’s annotations, I just think it’s really interesting and beautiful how everyone relates to a book in a different way. Also thank you for sharing your tips! I’m definitely going to try writing my thoughts every 50/100 pages. That’s such a brilliant idea! ❤️
@TimTim How did you annotate your books in elementary school ? I am trying to figure out how to do it and maybe seeing how someone did it elementary school might help me to figure it out.
@@logann-mackenziefroste563 honestly I didn't even know there was such a thing as annotating. I just had these tabs and whenever I was reading and felt like I wanted to look back at a certain part later, I'd tab it. at first I didn't write in my books, I just tabbed, then I started using sticky notes, then pencil and now I write with pen and underline and highlight. I also don't annotate everybook. I just read and tab for the first 50-100 pages and if it seems like a book I wanna annotate, I go back to my tabs and write my thoughts. remember not to pressure yourself. annotating is supposed to be fun. read for enjoyment and slowly and step by step annote books you know you're gonna love and keep.
We should start a book exchange club except with only annotated books, and then (If you know the other people well) you have to guess who the book belonged to 😂
If you’re hesitant about writing in books this is THE BEST tip ever, you can buy clear posted notes and place them on top of the text and annotate on there it’s all see through so you can read the book fine. You can also highlight the text on the posted note . Another options are erasable pens and highlighters they are honestly great and you can rub them out.
Thank you so much for this tip! I’d never heard of these before but I’ve just ordered some from Amazon which will change everything for me regarding annotating. Thank you ☺️💛
You could try out ball point coloured pens too! Fibre point and gel ink usually bleed through easily but since ball point ink is essentially dry as soon as u write it might work out for u :)))
I love when it comes to people who make it all cute... my adhd as* makes me underline and box things just to retain a little bit of the book. Even if I don't love the book I have marks all over just so I can follow along and actually remember the details rather than letting it all go
@@throneofpages It also helps if people feel like they're being unproductive if they're reading! I have tangible proof I was doing something and it always makes me feel a lot better :)
I always TRY to annotate my books but I never end up doing it because im always carrying the book around wherever I go, and it's not that easy to write on a post-it on a moving train! But this helped a lot and I now know how to organize and colorcode my things I use for annotating my books! Thank you
for the bogged down question: i take pictures of pages i want to go back to and annotate if i’m not in the mood to do it in the moment. plus it lets me go back and revisit those moments once i’m finished with the book.
I've never annotated in books and I feel I'm missing out which is why I'm here😂. I love how you say you get to see your own character development when rereading books you already annotated💖 This video was super helpful for me. I took notes!!!
@@racheldemain1940 That is very understandable!! Can you add tabs to show your favourite passages, or is it more that you can't have anything on the pages at all? I can understand needing your books to look as beautiful and pristine as when you first opened them😊
i watched a lot of videos on annotating ..but i was so confused and i came across this today.. thank you for explaining simply and making it not look intimidating. also i loved the summary post its idea because sometimes i leave a book in the middle and summary post its are helpful for when i want to go back
I love seeing how ppl annotate their books, that’s partly what motivated me to start doing it too! If anyone’s worried about starting to annotate, I would recommend using a pencil. That’s what I do (I started writing in my books pretty recently, i tried using tabs at first but i didn’t vibe with it) and i keep erasing and rewriting my notes so it’s great for me :) plus if worst comes to worst you can erase all your notes (carefully, it can rip pages and if the book’s ink is not very good it can fade under your eraser) to resell the book. You can probably do this with colored pencils but they tend not to get erased as easily. I also use post-it sometimes for longer thoughts if it doesn’t fit on the page. Since i tend not to use tabs, or color code, i put a cross in the margin next to the most important quotes so i can see them more easily when flipping through the book + i more often than not write little comments so i can remember why i underlined that part ^^
I totally agree with you writing in books is just beautiful its not for everyone but it really makes reading that book unique, also i hope your hand is okay much love 💗
I started using the gellyroll moonlight pens in the neons. They’re nice for underlining because the colors stick out and there’s no ghosting and bleeding. You just need to be careful of smudging if you get the 10s ☺️
Like 6 month or so ago I accidentally found your channel through this video ,and it's one of the best things that could have happen to me I almost watch all of your videos 2 or 3 times at this point and I am so glad I found you .❤
I love seeing different coding systems with colors. I personally do yellow for important plot points because it's the basic, blue for beautifully established places or prose, green for favorite parts or parts that ellicite strong emotion for me, pink for strong character development or growth, things that I know I might go back to to make sense of something a character does when the shoe drops, and then orange for moments that make me laugh.
This also let me realize that annotating is for yourself. And that I want it to be for myself, but I'm scared that I will still write things that I think other people will relate to, even though I don't. Anyway thank you so much! :)
I looked into other annotation videos and this one is my favorite. You did a great job at explaining the tips and you generalized your process really well that it was quick and concise but also information. Great work! I'll be subscribing.
Okay, this was so helpful as I’ve never annotated any of my books before but definitely taking your advice and starting easy with tabs !! Thank you, queen💛
I always annotate on my second read! I absolutely love annotating but it somewhat takes me out of the story when I’m reading it for the first time, so if I really enjoy the book, I read it again and annotate then. It helps me understand the story so much better and it also means that only my favorite books are annotated, which I feel is really special!
Totally love your comment!! I have not annotated my fiction books because I am anxious to get the book read and don’t want to stop to make notes or underline. I just enjoy the flow of the read. I am thinking when and if I reread a book I really enjoyed and that had many gems that I remember I am considering annotating then.
here after your war & peace video to see how you annotate! honestly, just want to you, your editing style is incredible and you definitely have a talent for it
I love all the pens you use, they're my go-tos as well. Also, I use zebra brush tip midliners to highlight -- they don't even bleed through dictionary pages. Also, I haven't tested any of them out, but they make specific highlighters for bibles which have very thin pages, so I imagine those highlighters wouldn't bleed.
Dry highlighter!!!! Lifesaver for highlighting old books/books with thin pages! Wish I could attach a picture here! You get it in all neon highlighter colors!
Love your video and it gave me more confidence in annotating my books. I just started annotating and I'm afraid if I don't like the book I can't unhaul it, really like reading at least 100 pages, tabbing and writing on sticky notes, great idea! I also like your meaning of each tab color.
@@throneofpages I'm annotating my first book. I'm tabbing, underlining and writing notes directly in the book I'm reading, I love it! It's true for me and as mentioned in your video, it really does personalize the book, and how I was feeling during certain scenes. It's great. My method is quickly tabbing first and when I'm done reading I go back and underline and make notes, found this works so well for me, and relaxing at the same time.

I also realized before seeing your other video I won't annotate in the beginning either because I need to know for sure I will love or like the book enough to keep it. My first book I started at chapter 12. After I am finish I will go back and annotate. I also tab pages I need to go back if I don't care to write. I love it.
The moment I started playing the video, I felt so comfortable again. Even though Im way more simple with my annotating and im happy with a marker, I still LOVED watching your video once again!!!🤍🤍
i LOVE annotating books, especially classics!! i personally don't have a set method to annotating, i just annotate what feels right with the book. for instance, a book may be more character-driven, so i take note of the characterization (personality traits, how the mc interacts and evolves, etc.), while another book may be rich with themes. i would love to use highlighters, tabs, and colored pens but i'm so inconsistent and often lose commitment lol, that i need to use few materials as possible so i only use black gel ink pens to underline, circle, and scribble notes on the margins.
I LOVED your whole video but I just have to say that song you used for the end of your video Ahhhhhhhh I’m so happy! I’ve never seen anyone else take interest in the song and I just love that show so much. 😆😆😆

Hi, just my advice for the question 13:30 … it has happened to me so many times that I decided to better read it first digitally. Of course I have so many reason more to start reading digitally but one of them was that, I have some book which I ended not liking them that I cannot get rid of because I already annotated on them. So that way I can digitally annotate whatever I want in them and then decided if it’s worth the book to buy it so I can write on them or not. Of course this is just my personal opinion and I know not everyone like to read digital books but, it’s worth the try! 💕

6:54 this looks soooo good omg. I feel so motivated
I do the same exact thing.
agreed! the hassle of switching colour pen when highlighting is driving me crazy
The green one is seriously the best idea ever! Sometimes I don’t get references and this is a great way to understand Jen and put it right there in the margins
your annotated books look so stunning! honestly, I think I started annotating books because I saw you doing it and just told myself to just go with it, so thank you for that.
you’re so welcome 🥺💖
From a 43 yo bookworm- thank you for introducing me to the wonders of this idea! I read very quickly, but sadly “dump” the book info out of my memory banks very quickly as well. It’s been a huge irritation to me for years. I think doing this will help with that and be fun as well. Thanks again!
You’re absolutely welcome 🥹💗🫶
Same and I am 65
I've always been a "DON'T TOUCH THE BOOK" person too and kind of trying to keep them perfect, but you reinforced what I've been thinking for a few weeks about anotations as a way of telling stories. The major reason that changed my mind was bc now my books are filled with humidity and there's no going back for that lmao but it can be beautiful as well depending on how you see it. Besides that, you inspire me so much, you transmit such an incredible peace, i really love your channel
you're too kind, thank you so much :")
I used to write the page numbers of my favourite moments on the title page, but your method is much easier, I love it!
happy i could help!!
this method is also used by Robert Kiyosaki
I have a notebook by my side and have no need to ruin a book
I don’t really like annotating too much because to me it feels like when you’re studying and you highlight a whole assignment (which defeats the purpose lol), but I’m planning on starting “The Tale of Genji” and I think annotations could be super helpful since it’s massive and super old!
i recently annotated war and peace and it deeefinitely helped a lot in enjoying / understanding the story!
Yess, I really don’t enjoy redundant highlighting. I make sure to use it on small parts that are important
For highlighters that don't bleed through I suggest the Tombow brush pens, the pastel ones! 🙋♀️
Uuu I need to try those out!! Thank you for the suggestion 💖
Most definatley, :) the lighter colours are awesome :)
I tried these and the color bleeds to the back
I love how detailed this is! Made me ease into annotating, been wanting to do it but my anxiety to ruin my books kept saying otherwise. Glad to have found you, Isabella! 💜
Very useful information. I have been on the fence about annotating for a while now. Thanks to your video, I'm going to finally give it a try!
Glad it was helpful!
i love annotating in my books, is like they are part of me in the instant i put a highlight on the pages. is more like personal then everything. and i loved the video, thanks for sharing your thoutghs!!!!
I feel the same way!! I’m so happy you enjoyed 🥺💖
I like to annotate books on the second read which maybe defies the point but i find it more fun. This video gave me so much motivation thanks queen
i've been rereading books lately and adding new annotations on top of the ones i did the first time around and it's been so fun 🤧💗
i just had a wonderful thought. Imagine Bella as an ELA teacher! Bella, if you're reading this, I would love to be your student, not saying "you have to be an english teacher" just that if you were, your class would be so fun
I love that thought so much 😭😭😭
I started annotating with The Picture of Dorian Gray.
YESSSS DORIAN GRAY IS SUCH A FUN BOOK TO ANNOTATE!!!
I also wanted annotating an I buy Dorian Gray ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I promise i was listening WHILE staring at those six of crows cards stuck on the shelf behind you.
I LOVE THEM.
For highlighters that don’t go through the page, I recommend erasable friction ones because the ink doesn’t sink into the page. I don’t know how long lasting they are, but they’ve worked well for me
Careful using those pens. They are erasable because they respond to heat and friction, so over time they may fade or disappear.
hoe about wax crayon?
I love love love annotating books! I've only just recently started, so there are very few books with annotations, but I find I remember more and have a deeper enjoyment since I'm forced to slow down
I love how you picked the picture of dorian gray to show us examples :D I literally started reading it today and I’m tabbing every single page 🥲 it’s just SO good 😫
I’ve been annotating my books since I was in elementary school and it’s honestly really fun and enhances the reading experience so much.
@@timtim2247 Awesome. I tabs and pencils ✏️ to underline while reading Harry Potter just for my favourite parts.
Annotated version of picture of Dorian gray >>>>> Picture of Dorian gray
We should start a book exchange club except with only annotated books, and then (If you know the other people well) you have to guess who the book belonged to 😂
If you’re hesitant about writing in books this is THE BEST tip ever, you can buy clear posted notes and place them on top of the text and annotate on there it’s all see through so you can read the book fine. You can also highlight the text on the posted note . Another options are erasable pens and highlighters they are honestly great and you can rub them out.
Do you know where I can get the clear post it notes 👀👀
@@throneofpages i saw at target, office depot, walmart, five below and apparently amazon 😂
Even if I don't love the book I have marks all over just so I can follow along and actually remember the details rather than letting it all go
Annotating is a very personal experience it doesn’t need to look good or pretty or cute!! Whatever works for you is the way to go 😭
@@throneofpages It also helps if people feel like they're being unproductive if they're reading!
Thank you
Whatever works for you honestly!! Sometimes when I can’t annotate I just tab it or write down the page in my notes app for future annotating
@@throneofpages ooh that’s smart! I’ll do that from now on thanks! :))
for the bogged down question:
i take pictures of pages i want to go back to and annotate if i’m not in the mood to do it in the moment. plus it lets me go back and revisit those moments once i’m finished with the book.
I've never annotated in books and I feel I'm missing out which is why I'm here😂. I love how you say you get to see your own character development when rereading books you already annotated💖 This video was super helpful for me. I took notes!!!
i just CAN'T annotate a book, it doesn't;t work with my OCD with books.
@@racheldemain1940 That is very understandable!! Can you add tabs to show your favourite passages, or is it more that you can't have anything on the pages at all? I can understand needing your books to look as beautiful and pristine as when you first opened them😊
i watched a lot of videos on annotating ..but i was so confused and i came across this today.. thank you for explaining simply and making it not look intimidating. also i loved the summary post its idea because sometimes i leave a book in the middle
and summary post its are helpful for when i want to go back
i'm glad i could help! 🥹
Seeing books annotated this beautifully made my heart flutter
I totally agree with you writing in books is just beautiful its not for everyone but it really makes reading that book unique, also i hope your hand is okay much love 💗
It’s getting better!! Thank you for asking 💖💖
i have been wanting to annotate for so long but i had no idea how or what to do and this helped me so much 💕
i'm so happy i could help 🥰🫶
The queen of annotating has spoken and we have been blessed ✨
🥺👉👈
I always enjoy this video no matter how many times I see it. It’s interesting to see everyone’s different process
I started using the gellyroll moonlight pens in the neons. They’re nice for underlining because the colors stick out and there’s no ghosting and bleeding. You just need to be careful of smudging if you get the 10s ☺️
Like 6 month or so ago I accidentally found your channel through this video ,and it's one of the best things that could have happen to me I almost watch all of your videos 2 or 3 times at this point and I am so glad I found you .❤
i'm so so happy you found me too 😭💞
best annotating video i’ve watched as i search. ❤
I love the idea of reflecting on the book every so often. I think I’m gonna use that thanks!
You’re very welcome :”)
I looked into other annotation videos and this one is my favorite. You did a great job at explaining the tips and you generalized your process really well that it was quick and concise but also information. Great work! I'll be subscribing.
thank you so much!!
Okay, this was so helpful as I’ve never annotated any of my books before but definitely taking your advice and starting easy with tabs !! Thank you, queen💛
you're so very welcome 💛🌷
I always annotate on my second read! I absolutely love annotating but it somewhat takes me out of the story when I’m reading it for the first time, so if I really enjoy the book, I read it again and annotate then. It helps me understand the story so much better and it also means that only my favorite books are annotated, which I feel is really special!
Totally love your comment!! I have not annotated my fiction books because I am anxious to get the book read and don’t want to stop to make notes or underline. I just enjoy the flow of the read. I am thinking when and if I reread a book I really enjoyed and that had many gems that I remember I am considering annotating then.
here after your war & peace video to see how you annotate! honestly, just want to you, your editing style is incredible and you definitely have a talent for it
ahh thank you so much!! 🥺👉👈
You get it in all neon highlighter colors!
oh I MUST see if Amazon has them I need them 👀
Love your video and it gave me more confidence in annotating my books. I just started annotating and I'm afraid if I don't like the book I can't unhaul it, really like reading at least 100 pages, tabbing and writing on sticky notes, great idea! I also like your meaning of each tab color.
I’m so glad my video helped you out!! 💖
@@throneofpages hi! QUESTION : what are u circling with a black pen for example here 8:50 in the purple paragraph u circle the world had become wonderful why did u circle BTW I love your videos
i discovered your channel 2 days ago and I was this 🤏 close to comment asking if you could explain how you annotate- so this is literally perfect. also I love your videos
Welcome to my channel 🥺💖
These days I am trying to learn how to annotate. I started writing my thoughts for king lear the shakespeare play and you come along with video I wanted to watch. Thank you !
You’re very welcome!! I hope it helped 💖
the highlighters that don't bleed through the pages EVEN in the books with suuuper thin pages are the pilot frixion erasable highlighters. they come in 6 colors and they are soooo convenient because you can erase them!! i use them for annotating my books and they never did me wrong
It's so satisfying to see you flip through your annotated war and peace book 😍
17:34 - The Crayola Supertips! They have a lot of colors for any color tab you have and even the darker colors don’t bleed through.
Thank you! 🤍
I bought the first book I ever purchased and I was quite nervous at first, but as I kept going through the book, I found it enjoyable. And I realized I understand the book better when I annotate. I couldn't even believe I just finished two chapters in one day.
im two years late, but BIBLE HIGHLIGHTERS ARE MY LIFESAVERSSSSS
✍️✍️✍️
Honestly, thank you so much. I’ve always wanted to start annotating and I just use tabs at the moment and this video had honestly helped me a lot so thank you
I have these same tabs. I started tabbing away because of you lol. I also realized before seeing your other video I won't annotate in the beginning either because I need to know for sure I will love or like the book enough to keep it. My first book I started at chapter 12. After I am finish I will go back and annotate. I also tab pages I need to go back if I don't care to write. I love it.
Yes!! Exactly 💖💖 when you get that feeling of “oh I definitely need to annotate this” it’s such a wonderful feeling
Always an inspiration! 🥰😍Giving me the motivation to annotate my books, more classics books actually!
annotating classic books is sooo fun!
The moment I started playing the video, I felt so comfortable again. Even though Im way more simple with my annotating and im happy with a marker, I still LOVED watching your video once again!!!🤍🤍
you're so nice please 😭✋i'm so happy you enjoyed!!
Your handwriting is so pretty ❤
i LOVE annotating books, especially classics!! i personally don't have a set method to annotating, i just annotate what feels right with the book. for instance, a book may be more character-driven, so i take note of the characterization (personality traits, how the mc interacts and evolves, etc.), while another book may be rich with themes. i would love to use highlighters, tabs, and colored pens but i'm so inconsistent and often lose commitment lol, that i need to use few materials as possible so i only use black gel ink pens to underline, circle, and scribble notes on the margins.
I LOVED your whole video but I just have to say that song you used for the end of your video Ahhhhhhhh I’m so happy! I’ve never seen anyone else take interest in the song and I just love that show so much. 😆😆😆
Another great video!! I love seeing your system of hows and whys, as I'm still trying to figure out my own personal annotating system...all I know so far is that there is nothing more fun than attacking a book with a highlighter 🤣
ATTACKING A BOOK WITH HIGHLIGHTER 😂😂💀
I’ve started to highlight and annotate my book I’m reading currently recently. I like your tabs idea and might adopt that since I do want to donate books in the future that get below a 4 star from me and that may be the best way to do things so that I don’t write all over my books 😅
I feel like this video is what I've been waiting for. I've always wanted to annotate but was super confused. I'm reading Murakami currently and I've just started annotating, your video was so awesome!! It's definitely gonna help me in my process :)
This really helped me feel more comfortable in trying to annotate. I'm gonna try this when rereading an old one to start off:)

Your annotations look so great! I love annotating, it’s so fun to go back and see my thoughts
Thank you so much!! 💖🥺
that's amazing because not only you put yourself through the book but also you mull over through it and make your experience so beautiful however i personally find it kind of difficult cause it need lots of work and attention,i don't regularly annotate my books in the specific way you do but i try underline the impressive parts and sometimes write my thoughts on it wich sometimes feel good on the other side i get worried about the probability that someone read my book and finds my thoughts pointsless or ridiculous 😅😅anyway what you do is admirable you should keep going this way excellent 👏👏

thank you for the advice!! i have been picking up the habit of reading more ebooks when bringing the physical is too hard/i don''t have it so i'll definitely be trying this out! 💛
