Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is brilliant. One of the few songs from any artist I can listen to and never get tired of. It was right in the same era with Jungleland and Band on the Run where they strung together a few short songs to make one long song. Masterpiece.
YASSS. I love it so much I have a wine corner in my house and there are two bottle holder shelves with glass hangers below them, and I put chalkboard pant on the fronts of them and they say “A Bottle of Red” and “A Bottle of White.”

Touches my very soul and speaks to part of me as if we grew up together. Even in this horrid recording and short clip he chokes me up all over again and make me wish I had had a hard to silently take... give and give a squeeze ... knowing silently without fail a return squeeze would come being received in a blink. One which carries unheard words.... reassurance. It's be a life time. 20 years & I'm only 55.

I just found a recent appreciation for "Just The Way You Are." I've listened and enjoyed a fair amount of Billy Joel since my youth. Just The Way You Are had me really like, this is deep an well written. I was feeling it and listened today as well. I love the duality element in many of his songs.
I love "Vienna"....and "The Stranger."
I would guess that Vienna would be his answer.

Amazing to hear him say this. I've been a pianist since i was 5 yrs old (34 now) and i discovered this song as a freshman in high school. It is still the one i play when i first sit down at the piano. I love this song. I thought no one else knew about it.
And So It Goes will always and forever be my favorite Billy Joel song.
Piano Man is my absolute favorite. His dulcet, pure voice and the tale of angst and hope is just a beautiful, wistful thing I've wept to on not a few occasions.
He says its one of his weakest songs....melody is very simple and repetitive.

Me too. I'm not surprised this is always mentioned amongst his favorites. It speaks to me lyrically because people sometimes forget there are two people in a relationship with equal rights. I don't know music, so I didn't know why the melody stayed with me until he just explained it.

Well, it’s not that he’s a great singer, which he is good, it’s that he’s a good singer, and piano player, and guitar player, and keyboard player, and he wrote all of his own lyrics, and all of the melodies for ALL of the instruments, and I’m probably forgetting a few.

Impossible to pick one. His catalog rivals any major star ever.
He had such a short career in terms of putting out music. Hate that 1994 was the year of his last album.

Just saw him in Chicago. On the way home I played this one for my wife. I explained the melancholy feel of the intervals matches the lyrics perfectly.

Allentown is my favorite. It's a once in a lifetime song that captured the plight of the people in that area at that time. You feel the dispair. You don't need a video. You can picture it.
I agree. It captures the sense of loss and resignation that disempowered people feel. It’s about the movement of blue colour work to cheaper countries, but it could be about anything where power and money ignore the happiness of people.
It’s beautifully written and performed, melancholic but with a nostalgic hopefulness. I love it. Ps I saw him at a taping of Colbert on the 8th of Feb, he wasn’t advertised as being on, so it was a surprise. We all went nuts. I’m from the UK, but he’s up there with Elton for us. He uses a universal language in his songs.

I like how "Scenes" is actually three meh songs (Bottles, Small Talk, and Brenda/Eddie) that when cobbled together make one strong medley.
That has been one of my faves for years
And So It Goes was written around/before An Innocent Man. But when he met Christie Brinkley, he was so happy that he couldn't put it on the album. It wasn't until later in the decade that he finally revisited it for Storm Front. It was written about his relationship with Elle McPherson, whom he dated before Brinkley. He knew the age difference wasn't conducive to either of them and a break-up was inevitable.
