I have to chuckle. I’m in Oregon. When we went to Missouri to visit the outlaws. I mean Inlaws. I almost couldn’t believe how hot it was when we got off the plane. The entire nightmare, I mean vacation, I was soaking wet. The humidity almost took my breath away.

For the heat..... you're close enough to the house to run a box fan on an extension cord. I'm in S. Florida. A fan is a game changer. Put it where you can take frequent mini breaks and stand in front of it. The moisture in your clothes will cool you off in front of the fan. Also work in short spurts with a fan/ water break in-between. Don't try to just power through.

I placed radishes in with my squash bc I heard the squash bugs don't like them. In happy to say No squash bugs this year! So that worked. Unfortunately I got hot with Vine borers! Not deterred, I'm planting more now ( June) since the eggs should be hatched and gone. 🤞

Welcome to Missouri. Where the humidity is year round. We have super hot summers and some winters are -20 below. The positive is that we have great gardening, great sports. I.E. St.Louis Cardinals, Blues etc.

I couldn't take the heat and humidity there. I can't even use a sauna, I just can't breathe. So I'll stay on the southern oregon coast. This past week I finally got everything planted. And all my beans are coming up after 5 days. I planted 10 different beans for dry beans. Then I will can them. Also planted yellow wax bean seeds and green bean seeds and they are coming up. Only took my spinach seeds 4 days to come up! So even though I was late getting things in. I think they are going to grow fast. Now that the weather has finally warmed up. By warmed up I mean it has gotten to 70°. Again, congrats on the new homestead!

I hope you have some harvest this year! For Missouri, June planting is a late start. We started tomatoes in cold frames in March and usually harvested beginning in early June. Potatoes should be in the ground by St. Patrick's Day.
There are tricks for tomatoes in the Ozarks: strip off all but the top 4-6 leaves, then lay the stem down and cover with dirt so you have lots of roots. Pinch off the suckers and leave only 3-4 blooms per cluster. Get some plastic 2 liter and cut the bottoms off, bury one neck down next to each tomato plant and fill with water every morning; they need consistent water. By July 4, we had Early Girls weighing over 5 pounds each! And calcium to prevent blossom end rot.

The heat here in Missouri can suck your energy clean outta ya. Most folks here work outside in the morning and evening. The hottest hours are spend working inside. Instead of jeans, wear scrubs, they are life savers in this heat. Depending on where you live there are tons of second hand stores here and you can pick them up super cheap. If you are near Rogersville there is a store where everything is a quarter. It’s hit or miss but I’ve seen scrubs there many, many times. I bought so many skirts there, some brand new for only $.25 each! Welcome to the Ozarks.

Yes! Missouri resident here - west of St Louis. I garden EARLY in the morning, and late at night. The heat and humidity are insane, but you will acclimate in time. Anytime between 9am and 7:30 pm, I’m doing stuff indoors. So DO be sure your plants that are subject to fungal issues have plenty of airflow. Your tomatoes need to be at least 2 ft apart, and heavily pruned. Welcome to Missouri🤗

Have been glued to your channel since the move. I am a little jealous, as we are a few years out. in the meantime, a little of what I have learned. All bell peppers start as green. If you pick them green, you have green. If you let them ripen, you will get yellow, red, orange...etc. They are much sweeter after they change color. We wait to pick jalapenos and poblanos until they turn, also.

I used to live in the Branson area, yes the humidity is rough. I moved to NE Missouri for family reasons. Hot and humid here too. I personally feel a "journal" of your progress in a new location is an awesome idea. There are established homesteaders and I enjoy watching them. In saying that seeing the beginning and the progress you make through this process would be wonderful. It would be beneficial for others who are "starting over" to see.

Don’t give up on your peppers too soon . Here in SC I struggle with bell type peppers but usually get something by September/ October. Peppers don’t like night temps above 70* or day time above 90*. And sometimes our humidity is 90% or above . Plant you some okra and sweet potatoes. Welcome to the hot, humid south.

Even when I was younger I'd work parts that were shaded, like in morning or evening. Have my bees set up to get shade morning and evening in summer so I can work them. Take care of yourselves until you acclimate to this climate

When I used a.c. & knew I had to be outside in the heat I set my a.c. NO more than 10° below the outside temp, other wise going outside feels like a heat stroke... You probably saw this same thing when you drive across the country but when I drove for 4 hours across my state there were so many fields not planted. I was shocked. Then the dairy farms were either empty or only had about half of their normal amount of cows. The beef cows were nonexistent. I had heard this on videos but didn’t believe that they would actually get rid of cows they already owned. But it is a fact. At least in my state. I guess the grain prices are outrageous. So if you get a cow maybe start that field of grain too while you’re at it. The best of success in your new life. I wish you all lots of energy. And seriously pick up one of those professional cooling vests. Like on The Cooling Store. Get the more expensive one, it matters.

I was subscribed to your channel but I had some surgeries and recovery time and as it happens TH-cam must have dropped my subscription and well, I found you back because of #fermentingfebruary so I am playing catch-up on your videos. Although it is well past the time this garden was harvested and soon time to plant this year's, I must say that although you say you only got green bell peppers, they all ripen to a color. Usually, when they don't say their color, they will ripen to red if left on the plant long enough!

Moving to a hot and humid place in the summer is very difficult. I moved to Korea in June and to GA in July. It's been 11 years here and I still hate working outside in the summer. You are doing a really great job. I think I heard you say that you thought you bought red bell peppers but got only green. I'm not sure if it is different depending on the variety, but the bell peppers I've grown will change color the longer they are left to grow. The green is the immature fruit. If I misunderstood what you said, my apologies. Very best wishes on your new journey.

I have a friend who is a Georgia native and I don’t think she’s even used to it 😂 I did mention that and now that you mention it I had heard it was an immature fruit, idk why I didn’t think of that!

Hey! My family and I are very seriously considering moving from Oregon to Missouri for similar reasons to you all.
I gotta say, the heat, humidity and bugs all featured in this photo are not a selling point.😂 but good for me to see the reality cuz it’s easy to only focus on all the positives.
I would really love and appreciate hearing more about your move and the state itself and how’s it’s been. How you would compare it to Washington. Everything someone considering moving there might like to know.☺️ thank you!

I'd be so tempted to buy huuge staked sails for shade. In fact it would be a necessity. You can buy semi perferated so it lets sun in but offers shade.

I’ve not watched your channel in awhile so I totally missed that you were going to move. Why did y’all pick Missouri? Do you have a video on that. We have similar heat humidity in Kansas and it’s very interesting to hear someone new to the area talk about it lol 😂 it’s been especially rough this year. Getting August weather way to early.
