      I usually paint those cheap intakes either satin black or with rustoleum bedcoat but I'm actually wanting this to look riced out so I'm gonna leave it.😅 I'm hoping to order the Ebay headers and x-pipe next payday. Maybe sooner if my uncle goes ahead and pays me for the Lq4/4L80 Im building for him. 😉

      Ok I now I have the universal split intake but it's clearly wider and bigger than this one. With my open front slits next to my fog lights outside air makes it to the two filters. Works great.

    I've got a cold air intake with huge twin lung filters on my c5. Not a really noticeable hp gain. First thing to do is get front of hood after market gasket as if you get caught in rain and water gets under front lip of hood and onto filters you could end up sucking water into engine.

      Yea brother I’m way beyond that at this point in the build. This video was like 8 months ago and was actually a bit of a joke at the time. 😉 The filters on this eBay intake are probably more restrict than the factory filter but fit the spirit of the build at the time.

    For the money eBay intake doesn’t look to bad. I bought one for my 2012 Camaro it was actually a pretty good intake for the money no complaints.
    Checked for dirt or debris getting into intake always looked clean.

      Looking good and performing well are two entirely different things. If looks is all you care about then this works fine. If you care about performance then these intakes actually hurt it as I’ve shown in datalogs in multiple other videos since making this video five years ago.

  • @enthused7591

    Wouldn't be surprised if the small filters breath better than the stock setup. The stock setup is unbelievably restrictive.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would be HIGLY surprised if they did. The total surface area of these filters is actually less than the stock filter. They are tiny. I only installed this intake because it fit the “China” criteria of the build but I fully intend to trash it once I hit the goal for this budget portion of the build. Especially after seeing Lees results at the track. If you’ve watched this whole series you’ll see a buddy of mine(Lee) with an identical vette in some of my videos. He had this same intake and switched to a Volant(at least I think that’s what it was) while we were at the track and picked up 2 tenths and a couple mph in the 1/8 with no other changes. I only wish we would have had a stock setup to test as well that day. I honestly believe you would be better off throwing a k&n filter in the stock intake and doing the zip tie mod than running this eBay intake.

      @@BadLuckGarage Lol they must look smaller in real life. Thanks for replying though man. Keep up the good videos.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea brother they’re tiny. I have small hands for a guy my size. I only wear a size large glove so that kinda gives you an idea. Just for a vette comparison, most Honda Civic aftermarket intakes come with filters twice this size. Then add in the fact that the filtration media looks pretty dense on these as well and yea, not very good flow. Another issue is how high the filters are on the radiator which results in really high iats. I’ve actually thought about doing a follow up on this video going over my data logs from the dragstrip to show just how inefficient this mistake is and explain the problems and solutions with the intake setups on the C5s. The objective with any intake system on these cars should be to get as free flowing a filter as possible and place it as far down and forward as possible to get it away from the heat of the radiator and expose it to the cooler air at the front/bottom of that compartment. This eBay intake does neither of these things and it really shows in my datalogs.

    • @richardelliott8352
      @richardelliott8352 ปีที่แล้ว

      I question the unbelievably restrictive statement. Why would anyone think the engineers who, with super computer time, extensive testing, and a multimillion dollar development budget to work with, and who designed the engine would be unable to design an adequate air intake. More is not always better, especially with a computer matched to the engine air intake system .

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richardelliott8352 The thing you have to keep in mind is the GM engineers weren’t after “maximum power”. They were after better than anyone else in this catagory power while maintaining emissions output that met epa guidelines at the time. GM engineers have literally every available technology at their disposal when they designed these cars and they only came out with 345-350hp. Any Joe blow can add headers, and intake, and a dyno tune and easily pull another 40+hp out of an LS1 without ever touching the internals. If the GM engineers goal would have been to make thing as efficient as possible then that wouldn’t be the case and these cars would have had 400+ hp straight from the factory. That being said, 5 years ago when I made this video, it was kind of an inside joke between me, my friends, and a few other TH-camrs. This eBay intake is total garbage and I’ve explained why using data logs several times in videos post dating this one. The funny thing about TH-cam is people often find one or two of your videos and fail to go back and watch an entire series or even see all the other builds you’ve done over the years. If a person were to go back and watch the entire Chinavette series, they would understand that this entire Chinavette build was meant as an FU to the average corvette owner who spends tons of money on expensive name brand parts just because they don’t know any better or think they’re somehow better. I showed in this build that you can spend around $1500 total and have a car capable of making 10 second passes whereas your average C5 owner will spend that much money on just an axleback exhaust that does nothing but make the car louder. Matter of fact, a conversation on a C5 Facebook group about a $1500 set of mufflers is exactly what prompted me to buy this car and do all this years ago. Yes, I’m so petty that I went out and bought a C5 just to prove a point to a bunch of boomers in a Facebook group. 🤣 Hell I don’t even really care for Corvettes and I actually had no intention of keeping the car either. But after I was done with it and tried to sell it my wife wanted it. So I gave it to her and it’s been one of her daily drivers for the last 3 years now. Still has the nitrous in it too. 😈

    The stock accordion looking pleats on the intake hose serve a function by disturbing the air flow, to get a better air sample to the factory sensor. So, any system using a factory sensor and a smooth section of hose as a replacement intake part, one can tell just by looking, without a dyno comparison , it is not going to be an improvement over stock. Becuae the computer will poorer quality data so determine the tune than with the stock part.
    the sensor screen also modifies the air flow productively, also to get a better sample of the passing air. My 2003 has a screen before the sensor, function is not improved by removing the as designed screen on the part, they are not just making stuff up when they design parts. just carefully spray clean the thing with a dedicated cleaner, not brake cleaner, that's all you can do. while you are at it, you might hit the throttle body too, my used car had little piles of dirt in the crevices, like it had never been cleaned.

      @@BadLuckGarage I just bought it because of 2 reasons. First it cost only 60$, so i was thinking its nothing, and i give it a try.
      And second its not a Complex Technical Thing. Its very simple, so there is basicly no room to make something wrong.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately you don't have to make something "wrong" for it to still be ineffective. You just have to not have a clear understanding of what the part is intended to accomplish....which is why this is such a poor design. Tiny filters and sucking hot air straight from the top of the radiator is a bad mix and definitely hurts power output. IATs were higher than some of the turbo cars I've built and pcm was pulling a ton of timing because of it. I actually discussed all this and went over raceday datalogs in later videos in this build playlist about a year ago. This intake fit the "china parts" and peanut budget criteria of this build back when I did it, but I would in no way recommend this to anyone who actually cared about the performance of their Corvette.....or any other car for that matter.

      Brother I know you’re probably new to the channel but this was kind of a joke video. I wouldn’t actually recommend this setup if you’re truly looking for performance. I’ve actually explained why in other videos and in teapsonce to some of the comments on this video. But basically the filters are way too small and intakes like these experience horrible heat soak and slow speeds which caused the pcm to pull timing and lose power.

      Everyone has different skill sets and levels of knowledge. Why would you troll people on your own YT channel??? There’s wrong with going a different direction on a modification. • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tremorsusa And this one doesn’t. I’ve proven this with datalogs in other videos to help those who want to learn. People come to my channel to learn to go fast on a small budget. In this series I showed them how to make a C5 run 10s for less than $1500. My regular viewers loved the Chinavette series. The corvette purists hated it and stayed ignorant as I knew they would. So as for trolling, yes, this entire C5 project was one huge troll ….to the ignorance of the C5 community. He was running this same eBay intake and did nothing but switched intake and dropped 2/10ths in the 1/8 mile. The filters are the restriction I’m sure but like I said, for the price of buying two k&n filters and a beer flowing air bridge, you’re already in the price range of a much better intake.

    one more thing, you can get larger K/N filters if you think the stock units are too small.at 45 bucks for the unit thats a doable option.

      Airflow is only one of several issues with this intake design. I have recorded data logs during track days and covered other issues such as heat soak and filter placement in greater detail in the videos that I have made in the year since this install was done. Also it should be noted that after paying an additional $90 for K&N filters, you would have pushed yourself into a price point where a much better performing custom setup could have been utilized.

      @@BadLuckGarage . Fair enough, but how did it compare to the OEM unit,which is what most guys only care about? BTW, that unit on your car in the video reeks of low quality Chinese plastic which would explain it's poor fitment and heat fatigue failure.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @richard knudsen The unit that was on the car when I bought it was actually a Volant intake system which ironically enough are made in the USA. And no I was not impressed with the quality at all and thats covered in other videos as well where I attempted to repair it. As for comparing this system to stock, I have not, but a friend actually switched from this ebay intake while we were at the track and picked up several tenths in the 1/8th. The specifics are in the comments of this video as I've covered this topic multiple times over the last year.

      @@BadLuckGarage . Ok, so I came in in the middle of the conversation and you make valid points but for $45 bucks over stock its still a good deal. I do have 4 C5's btw, and one has that ,two are stock and one came with the $300 Vararam but I havent bothered to A/B that with any of the others. Got a friend with DynoJet chassis dyno but never bothered him yet. maybe next spring when he's slow. Nice Talk.

      I’m not sure what conversation you’re referring to but in the end its YOUR car. You’re free to do whatever you like with it. I’m only informing you of my findings while track testing this intake because you made a comment on my video and I wanted to make sure you understood that there was more shortcomings with this particular intake than just the airflow so that you and others who may read through the comments were informed of that before choosing to spend hard earned money. That’s kind of why I make these videos. 😉

    Whatever happened to the Dyno test that was going to be done on this?

    • @BadLuckGarage

      There wasn’t enough interest in this C5 project to make it worth spending the money to put it in a dyno. Especially since we had set a $1500 max budget for it. So we did videos on intake, headers, xpipe, and nitrous, ran bottom 7s, won a few races, replaced the transmission, and I gave it to my wife as a daily so I could move onto other project vehicles on the channel. She’s still using it as one of her daily’s 3 years later. Lol.

    Stupid is as stupid does. These after market filters offer a higher flow way beyond the requirements of an engineat max rpm. The filter efficiency is very low and all this does is wear out an engine. I will not purchase an autowith the air filtration system modified. These filter are good for keeping the marbles out but that's all.

    I heard this kit doesn’t give you any horse power at all .. so why even install it lol

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why even watch a video about installing it? Lol. In all seriousness though, If you watch the “plans and goals” video in this playlist you’ll understand why I installed it. As useless as it it, it still met the criteria of this build. 😉 And to answer your question, based on the datalogs I discussed in other videos in this playlist, this intake most likely LOST power due to heat soak and poorly positioned air inlets. Also this video is two years old, so since you’re just now watching videos about this intake, there’s a pretty good chance I’m one of the people you “heard” saying this kit doesn’t give you any power because I’ve already proven it and let half the internet know. 😉
