    The fact that this is a puzzle makes me look at the correct move immediately. In a real position I'd probably fail to see this with the time control.

    Mathematicians should be able to solve this as well, and here’s why:
    The concept applied in this puzzle is known as ‘triangulation’, a technique that involves moving your King in a triangular pattern, while restricting your opponent’s King to move sideways. Eventually, it becomes the same position as the starting one, although the opponent has to move instead of you. Typically, a zugzwang forces them to play an unwanted move, securing the allied win.

    The Short Term Takeaway is that *in puzzles* the Tempo Move is Often the Solution. The Long Term Takeaway is to See This when it Actually Happens in a Real Game.

    I found Ka8 because it keeps the _distant_ opposition where there are 3 squares between the kings. It could also be thought of as a tempo move. I didn't see all the possible lines that follow from it, though.

    Nice video!

  • @stagna1959
    @stagna1959 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I figured it out without watching solution in video. Like often , waiting move is solution. Ka8 .
    'White wants to be his king on Kb8 and black king on Kd8 so pawn could check c7 + and king has to move Kd7 and block bishop check or Ke8, which allows white to promote c- pawn. Even if bishop takes the queen white will promote the other pawn
    I played vs Stockfish like this : 1. Ka8 Kd8 2.Kb8 Be6 3. c7+ Kd7 4.c8=Q+ Kxd6 .5.Qd8+
    Now it was Queen + K vs Bishop +K which was easy to convert. I probably was too clumsy to mate black, but preferred to play on dark squares only to avoid any nasty surprises from opponent`s light square bishop

  • @invaderzim1964
    @invaderzim1964 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Got this one quickly. Immediately saw not to move the pawns as they provided a wall against the black King. Also saw the need for a tempo move right away as well. I'm doing better, but most I still miss.

  • @tykemorris
    @tykemorris หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I solved it, including the tempo move. I knew I wanted my king on c7 while black wanted Kd8, which I couldn't stop. So I went for a tempo move to get zuzvong to force the Bishop away. Took me several minutes though.

  • @ConnorRybka

      1. Ka8 Bd7

    • @tykemorris
      @tykemorris หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That does make the plan messier but Kb7 protects the pawn. If black trades away his bishop, White escorts his other pawn for promotion. If Black saves his bishop by moving down the diagonal white Kc7 sets up for Pd7+ for a forced bishop trade. If Kd8 then white Pc7+ also forces a bishop trade with the follow up Pc8=Q.

    No one is gonna believe me, but I was able to figure this out IMMEDIATELY, applying an ancient method that works for (almost) ALL such chess puzzle videos :
    *Always look for the LEAST OBVIOUS and MOST ILLOGICAL-looking move.*
    In this case I figured: Surely if you straight-away attempt to promote pawns straight away, Black can simply stop them... *...OR...* ...if you try to get King closer to action, this will FAIL.
    *THEREFORE,* the solution has to involve a starting with... *...moving the king **_AWAY_** from the action !! :D* .... (...i.e. *Ka8* in this case here....)
    Ta-daaaa !! :D
    (and from THAT move onwards, it's elementary.)
    .

    • @QoppaSavanna
      @QoppaSavanna หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may say i shall be engaging you here with some sterile debate, but what you call the "most illogical" move might be, actually, the "most logical" one within a thinking framework quite different from the one you deem to be "natural". Let me explain myself a little bit: here the TEMPO will be one of the keys, along with the presence of a strategic C7 square. Of course, if you consider "pushing pawns" to be the "most" natural moves, then KA8 will sound definitely unnatural... but is it indeed ? Have a nice day or (k}night.

    • @stevenrix7024
      @stevenrix7024 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@QoppaSavannaIt does claim a distant opposition to Black’s Ke8, after all. A common theme in K+P endgames.

  • @miguelparada5283

    Ok, but what if 1 Ka8 Kd8 2 Kb8 Be6. The bishop retreats but to a square where it can be defended: 3 c7+ Kd7 4 c8=Q+ Kxd6. Now it's K + Q vs K + B, and I'm not sure of the outcome, but certainly Black has more chances for a draw.

    • @bigredracingdog466
      @bigredracingdog466 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Endgames are largely straight-line calculation, so most decent players should be able to solve this if they go through the variations one by one as the presenter did. There are fewer pieces so fewer numbers of variations. In this puzzle the Bishop has many squares it can go to, but only two diagonals. It doesn't matter whether it chooses e6, f5, g4, or h3. They amount to the same thing.

    • @tykemorris
      @tykemorris หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I totally solved it, but I don't have a rating. I did beat a grandmaster once while he was playing 7 other games simultaneously so I'm above average I think. It wasn't about seeing lots of moves ahead for me. I looked it over and decided I needed to move to b8 while black's king was on d8, which forced the Bishop to move.
