Mr. Holland's Opus was a popular movie, not long ago. The Gershwin songs weren't the heart of the movie, but, they were an important part, I wonder if anyone watching this, has seen that excellent movie. It was one of the better American movies.
Wow I will be playing in the production of Porgya nd Bess in July on 1st Oboe. I really love the passion and sound of Oboe, English horn and Clarinet player hats off. Lovely tone especially of oboe. This is a very challenging arrangement. Once again hats off.
What an awesome piece of music. I was pretty young when the movie came out but my Dad was crazy about it and bought the record ... and we became so familiar with this classic movie which is sadly not given the recognition it deserves
Italia meet our Catfish Row!! Nice to see music flow the OTHER direction for a change!! P and B--a Masterpice, of course--and why it isn't programed by the MET is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
That concert hall looks like the congress and senate room at the US capitol in Washington DC, where the state of the union address is delivered by the president and house speakers.
@DefenderDude21 The exerpt isn't all that hard, it just requires alot of practice. I learned it when i was 12, but of course, i spent multiple hours every day practicing it. Practice makes perfect, my friend!
Oh, I can go further than that: If you ask random people in this country about anything more than 10 years old, most of them will give you a vacant stare. You could ask the same about "Carousel", "Oklahoma", or Watergate, and get the same result. That says almost nothing about music, and almost everything about us, doesn't it? To conclude: 1. Porgy is classic Broadway. 2. Americans have already forgotten what they had for breakfast this morning. No surprises there.
@ikshields well, that is a complex question. In some respects it is kinda mainstream--in others absolutely trailblazing. think of it--a opera written for/about one aspect of black culture--that was never done before on the broadway/operetic stage (oops, I know, there's Treemonisha). . there are aspects of jazz and folk elements in it that were never done before.....its a masterpiece.
These guys have very expressive elbow movement. But I can't find a tempo from Maazel during "Bess You Is My Woman" even with a score, flashlight, and road map.
Andrea, do you by any chance know the model trombone and/or mouthpiece the soloist trombonist is using? Would you mind asking him if you still work with him? I'm very curious. Nice performance by the way!
@ikshields i think maybe the difference is that Southerners and Minnesotans don't speak with undending layers of symbolism and metaphor that can be studied for years and years.
@LLJtbone Did you play this same arrangement? That's awesome either way. I played a version with a community band and got to play a solo with plunger. Ya I love the trombone solo in this too. Is it an open solo for any instrument to play or is it specifically a trombone solo? In my opinion it sounds right on the trombone.
O. Henry, Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, Alice Walker (The Color Purple), and Margaret Mitchell (Gone With The Wind) are enough to show otherwise.
@belugafishgod Despite this, I can tell you that all politicians attending to this concert held in the italian parliament house are payed far more than they deserve.
George & Ira Gershwin (music, musicals) were pretty mainstream, in their day, there were 'where it's at', in entertainment, the musicals always sold out. But, yes, in their day, I guess they were radical, especially in this musical: they dared used real black people as actors/actresses, instead of blackface.
I didn't mean for that to be an attack against American literature. I meant more that our civilisation has a very narrow perspective on the Arts, causing lesser appreciation for those besides perhaps their most notable contributors. Gershwin was a very creative composer, but likely insn't recognised as widely because of such ignorance.
"Beyond" them? How? By the way, I'm a "Joe Schmoe" too, and so are you. We're all people in the street, pal, even the educated ones. I think Shakespeare is fun and easy to get into. It's just dialect, like listening to Southerners or Minnesotans -- what's the big deal?. C'mon, quit treating Shakespeare like he's "high-falutin", already. He wrote for a travelling band of drunken actors. He's more "Joe Schmoe" than you or me! He was a great writer, not a high society fop.
I like when a player gets into it. They're not only more entertaining to watch, but they tend to play with a personality. Anybody can sit rigidly and play, not everyone can pour their soul into it. And you can't play Gershwin without soul.
The beauty of any orchestra is in their hall. I go to the orchestra/symphony to listen, not watch. IMO, dancing your part is equivalent to NFL players celebrating a touch down. They are part of a team and should act accordingly; not try to put themselves above the rest. If you want to dance, learn to play a brass instrument and join a funk band.
The player was enjoying himself and feeling the music, what audacity! Really though, he played it very well, and let's remember that we are talking about a guy merely swaying a bit in his seat. Why doesn't he join a funk band? Because he plays oboe in a symphony orchestra with the music he clearly loves and prefers. You can express yourself while also being part of a 'team', don't be so uptight.
❤ Summertime.I.got plenty of nothing.and.nothing.is.plenty for.me.....outstanding.music.
The best performance of the Symphonic Picture I've ever heard - an awesome orchestra!
I could listen to Porgy and Bess all day at work. Very relaxing. I would eat that harpsichord to see this concert live.
Xylophone gets me woke
I Got Plenty Of Nothing was originally played on the banjo.

waow xylophone in opening so energik, i want to play this song. hehe
Well they ask for it on EVERY orchestral audition! So best of luck prepping it! I'm learning it now in college lol.
This piece is too beautiful for words
Saw Porgy & Bess for the first time last week at the Court Theater in Chicago. Loved it. Amazing play and performance.
I love watching orchestras perform. :D Especially when the musician's and conductor have as much passion as these guys do.
that xylophone lick is so tasty
It's so beautiful. I feel enraptured by it.
Italia meet our Catfish Row!! Nice to see music flow the OTHER direction for a change!! P and B--a Masterpice, of course--and why it isn't programed by the MET is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
So beautiful. Gershwin tops and so is Maazel.
Fantastic! How nice and sweet is this presentation! Very nice! Congratulations!
Old but gold.
uno spettacolo lo xilo!!! grandissimo Carmelo... un esempio!
Wow sounds excellent a really hard piece to pull of. I love the oboe in this piece he really did a great job.
Wow! Absolutely amazing!
Это так красиво, это приносит мне до слез.
Ascolto questa opera immensa e torno alla fine degli anni 50 quando io piccolo la sentivo con mio padre che seduto davanti al grammofono dirigeva l'orchestra.
Mi viene quasi da piangere.
Leonard Bernstein and the NY Symphony played a banjo on I've Got Plenty Of Nothing.
Other than that this is an excellent version of the Overture
Due, tre mesi fà ho frequentato un master a Riva del Garda con il trombonista del solo, Andrea Conti, un grandissimo insegnante di cui sono tuttora molto colpito, complimenti Maestro!
Extraordinary treat.
Sept.26: Happy birthday George Gershwin (1898-937) RIP, Composer. Blessings
There must of been a war between the percussionists for who gets the Xylophone part
That concert hall looks like the congress and senate room at the US capitol in Washington DC, where the state of the union address is delivered by the president and house speakers.
It's all about that dude at 4:12 - best part of the song for me

what really does it for me starts at 1:23. Gershwin is my fav.
16th note hell for any mallet player. I learned it in college. No way could I sight read it so I memorized it and hoped my prof wouldn’t notice. Lol.
Hello Andrea. Great playing!

Parliament or Senate in Rome, Italy
Does anyone know what venue this was? I've never seen a concert hall that looked like a legislative chamber.
The Italian Parliament hall

Bellissima.....
True up to a point, I gotta admit.
At least, unless the Minnesotan and the Southerner are Garrison Keillor and Tennessee Williams...
@ikshields
Porgy and Bess is an opera.
I read about it in a Daniel Estulin's book.. humm.
Holy $hit, that's the Italian Senate, isn't it?
Cool Bells solo!
(Overture)

@Mozart61 absolutely. its on par---I think even better.
@ikshields i think maybe the difference is that Southerners and Minnesotans don't speak with undending layers of symbolism and metaphor that can be studied for years and years.
4:08 theme it's amazing!

Un aspecto de la vida que nadie muestra...
Whoa! That's FAST!!!!
The guy at 2:25 is like "B!tch I'm fabulous"
which adapted version of the opera is this? Its not Catfish Row the Suite, or The Symphonic Picture version right?
@deicticdrummer174 "I got plenty of nothin"
They totally eliminated the banjo part from the orchestration! Replaced it with the trombone for "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'"! No banjo players in Italy?
texas all state, whoa
how much do these people get paid?!
Finally I find this piece played with a TROMBONE SOLO playing "I Got Plenty of Nuttin."
gracias !
Maestro Lorin Maazel conducting... what orchestra? London?
Odd location! Are they playing in a legislative hall?
Bien orchestré !

Where are they performing this? It seems very strange, it looks like a legislative hall or something lol

Percussionists.. Practice Porgy (all the licks) as it could mean getting an Orchestra Gig !! Herb Baker
We forgot Ernest Hemmingway :)
Doesn't this conductor look just like the New York Philarmonic conductor?
crazy chick, that plays a trumpet, without a trumpet.
5:46
1:10
What I can't believe is how Justin Bieber crap gets over a million views while this gets only 41 thousand.

"Mainstream"? It isn't?
Since when is "Porgy & Bess" a radical piece?
Not sure what you're trying to say, I guess...
came here after a video of xylophone solo
Might be a bass viola da gamba.
lol... there's a very good reason for that. ;-P
@miowmiowmiow123 I am a professional musician...tubist. I can tell you the answer to your question is....NOT ENOUGH!!! lol.
apache kampfhubschrauber
Oboe - oh no!! There is no need to dance your part.
How about you reserve judgment until you can play oboe like that.
32k0c I liked it showed he was feelin it, the song is really emotional, it was nice to see he felt a certain way about it!
I like when a player gets into it. They're not only more entertaining to watch, but they tend to play with a personality. Anybody can sit rigidly and play, not everyone can pour their soul into it. And you can't play Gershwin without soul.
