  • The is the RE-EDITED VERSION of the second half of the sixth episode of our Laurel Canyon miniseries, by Wolf River Music Television. There were glaring mistakes and omissions that had been made that were really bugging us and needed to be updated. So here it is again, and hopefully improved. Plus, some extra footage at the end regarding Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, etc.
    A Journey Thru History and Song 1965-1974 explores the inner workings of the music scene that seemed to explode out of this area north of Hollywood in the mid-1960's and featured legendary musicians and groups such as: The Byrds, The Mamas and The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Carole King, The Eagles, Gram Parsons, Love, Jackson Browne, The Monkees, etc. plus music industry giants such as David Geffen, Elliot Mintz, Jim Ladd, Ron Stone and Paul Rothchild. See the famous Canyon Country Store, Love Street, the Tom Mix Cabin, the Houdini Estate, and all of the other places made famous by the likes of Jim Morrison, Cass Elliot, John Lennon and others. We'll even touch on some of the darker elements that were lurking within the shadows such as the Manson Family and the inevitable evils of cocaine and heroin and they crept into the scene, causing havoc and destruction. No matter how many times this subject of music coming out of Laurel Canyon has been repeated in other documentaries, there's always something new to learn and discover. The stories are endless and some of it can be surprising and even downright shocking. Please be sure to watch all fifteen episodes. Each one has a different theme and a different set of characters and events.

    For every single tale in the history of Laurel Canyon, hundreds will probably never be told. Such an interesting place and time in our life. I thought of moving to LA in the mid 1960's, but I wasn't quite sure why, at the time. Now I know what I missed out on.

    • @memoryfield

      Yes, very much agreed. There were so many details and stories that we had to leave out just for the sake of time. I was up there in that canyon for about 12-14 total days of filming, and it could have ended up three times as much if we had the time for all of it. Thanks for watching!

      I grew up during that period of time and it is so romanticized these days. It wasn’t at all like it seems maybe for a very few very wealthy people it was the best part of their life but for majority of people living during that time it was a very economically hard for most people. There really wasn’t a middle class. You were either wealthy and you knew who these people were because they weren’t going to Vietnam or the lower class they ended up being drafted and serving. Only the rich got deferments. College was very expensive So if you were a rich kid you had a better opportunity for deferment. And as far as protesters of the war they were mainly rich kids that were never gonna go in the first place. It wasn’t a great period in US history by any means. I guess you had to grow up then to understand this. I believe that foreigners in this country had a better opportunity than Americans during the 60s.

    The late 60s in Laurel Canyon was a magical time and place with so much talent and creativity. Then, the snake entered the garden with the Manson family and paradise was lost. Frank Zappa saw it happening and fled with his family before it all fell down. Thanks for the series. Very well done.

    I adore Joni Mitchell’s first album. Song to a Seagull and Ladies of the Canyon are my favorites. I know Crosby is problematic but I appreciate that he’s able to acknowledge that she would have made it without him. That’s a surprising humility from someone with such a big ego.

    Billy - I watched this whole series last week (I think) including outtakes/analyses videos. I realize now that you filmed it in about 3 months and then posted each chapter in the fall of 2021 and partially 2022. That was a really quick turnaround!!! All that information, film, photos + music is top quality!!! Even a year later you're fact checking and adding material which is above and beyond. I applaud you for your hard work, authenticity, sense of humor and everything. I haven't fact checked this but I'm sure book authors have made more errors than you have and took years to write whatever it was. I don't have citations. Anyway, your series on Laurel Canyon is a top quality permanent stamp in history (in addition to your other music videos). A great big THANK YOU to you and others who helped you (shout out to Juliet)!!! Peace - Rick

    omg ... Blue is by far a work of art. I applaud David Crosby for mentioning Joni as the best poet as well as songwriter and singer..... which her voice must e ho angels
    David Crosby with CSNY era produced beautiful music a great time in history. Crosby prior to his dearh actually did some of his best work. His son he helped conceive had found him . if you can search here is where I heard them play almost jaxzy and lovely. Thank you for your research I was blessed in being anle to see in voncert many you mentioned. My favorite concert was Poco at a NY university- 50 cents to enter everyone stood on seats dancing. No to seeing Joni live .... thank you amazing research. I have more yet yo view
    .Our history then was dedicated to being a voice for peace.

    As a Hollywood liver you might know of Steve Allen. He did what Johnnie Carson did. A variety show on the TV. He had a very young
    Frank Zappa on who "played a bicycle with a violin bow". Frank decided to make his niche with the lunatic fringe who were weird but harmless. Back when I thought anything was possible I wrote to his daughter, Diva via her YT where she sold her knitting. I said, "You are pretty." To which she answered, "Thank you." She then refrained from answering anything else I said.

    Interesting note; Cosby, Stills and Nash LP cover in front of the old house was taken with the artists in reverse order from left to right. After they realized the mistake, the couldn't go back to retake it because that house (at 815 Palm Avenue) had been torn down just a couple weeks after the shot was taken.

    What a beautiful episode!! They just get better and better, you included some amazing history and are doing a stellar job. The Zappa stuff, so funny because the part about scantily clad ladies in Zappa's backyard made me wonder if these young ladies were the GTO's LOL. And the Joni Mitchell with Gram Nash story, makes me also wonder if he just wanted to be around her but was too nervous to tell her that maybe he had feelings for her???? Who knows, I'm such a hopeful romantic cheeseball 😅😅😅. Thank you for another beautiful episode. I'm going to keep going, this is so great!!

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh, he definitely had feelings for her and no doubt he made them known for sure. Joni seemed like an incredibly intense person, focused on her work, and she was known to be difficult and moody. Graham Nash, according to her, sometimes treated her like he was a "fan" and not really an equal and she said it often made her uncomfortable. But no one would really know all the details of their relationship better than the two of them, so I will just leave it at that. Thanks for watching!

    One thing becomes obvious...to be a "Rock Star", it is not enough to be just talented...one must also be considered attractive, beautiful, etc. So many talented people simply cannot make the cut, so to say, because they do not look so good...I also find it interesting, that no mention was made of Joni Mitchell having had a child, "out of wedlock"--at age nineteen...she gave it up for adoption, in order to pursue her career!...However, many years later, she did reunite with her now adult child. I guess that being narcissistic is also a plus, in this type of musical business.

    Great vids. Despite being a big fan of CSN/Y since early 70s, lots of info I wasnt aware of! Btw theres a humorous vid of a Nash interview where he tells how he met Cass and Crosby and then later Stills. He met Cass in a recording studio and she took him to meet Crosby. Then at a party at Peter Torks house, Nash asked Crosby about this guy playing the piano and Crosby said it was Stephen Stills and he introduced him. Weeks or months later at a dinner at Joni's house, is when Crosby, Stills and Nash joined their voices together over a song and they knew they had something special and CSN was born. This according to Nash himself.

      Yeah, we're starting to think that maybe this is where Crosby got the idea from. He just either didn't do it very well or else it wasn't really suited to Joni's singing voice the same way just talking worked on Zappa's recording. I mean, it only makes sense that Zappa lived just about 100 yards away from Joni and the Lumpy Gravy recordings came out in August of '67 (some of it, anyway) and then re-released again in May of '68. So yeah, same time period, more or less.

    Looking forward to your next episode but why wouldn’t I, they have all been amazing. You lay the groundwork and I’ve had a great time exploring other avenues of Laurel Canyon and what amazing things happened there. Glad you mentioned Canned Heat at the end of this episode hope you will delve into their time in the Canyon and talk about them being neighbors of Joni’s. I understand she has a caveat that involves her front door and that it can’t be touched due to ashes that are embedded in that door after the Canned Heat house burned down in 1968-69? Keep up the great work. Cheers!!

      Yes, right next door to Joni Mitchell. The whole place burned to the ground in 1969 and yet her house wasn't damaged at all. This story is the reason behind the fact that she believes her house is protected by some kind of a higher power. Crazy stuff!

    I've been loving these videos. I'm researching LA quite extensively for a project and have just gotten to Laurel Canyon that isn't what I expected. I thought it might be like Grand Canyon or maybe a few shacks with some Eagles or M*ns*n Family. I find its like a town here in England, sprawling and dense. Anyhow I spent my life not hearing Joni Mitchell's Blue so a few year ago I finally got it. I still haven't had time to sit and appreciate it. But now I'm really expecting great things. Thanks!

Small yards, houses close to one another, nowhere to park, traffic, etc. etc. You really have to get way up in there and up on top of Lookout Mtn. to get the feeling of peace and tranquility. Then you just have to hope that a fire doesn't break out because then you're trapped. LOL.

    I have never understood why Joni Mitchel's Song to a Seagull is so underrated. For decades, I considered it to be, far and away, the best pop album ever conceived, and then came along Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes - another first album many years in the making.
    IMHO, these two albums to share the Best Pop Album award, with the Doors first album nipping at their heels. The music on these two albums is boiling over with an originality and a serene beauty on a level with a Chopin Nocturne or anything by Miles Davis.

      Thanks. I agree with what you said. I know you mentioned how great the "Blue" album was. Seems that many people agree. However, the change in overall style beginning with that album didn't grab me as much as her first 3 albums did. On Blue, Court and Spark, and For the Roses, I really only liked a few songs from each, but I liked them a lot. From what I've said already, you may be able to guess almost precisely which songs those were. But I don't think those 3 albums were nearly as good overall as her first 3 albums. Beginning with her 7th album, she lost me completely. Again, my opinion. She certainly was an immensely talented artist.

    This series is great, I'm really enjoying it. I will put in some minor gripes about this one .... I have an early LP copy of Joni's first album and I STILL think it's cosmic, and I have a HiFi I've been working on for 25 years. You say that her finest work came later, and I love all of her albums through the 70's (Mingus is ace ) , but can you say tracks like 'Song to a Seagull' and 'Dawntreader' are not her best work ? !! Love Crosby's comment that in time she will be seen as the best - I am thinking more and more the same. OK, final gripe ;o) - do all Americans pronounce Graham Nash as 'Gramme Nash' ? ( Keep up the good work .. )

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, I can only go by what Joni herself feels about her earliest recorded work and that is that she doesn't feel that it's her best. It doesn't mean any of it's bad, per se, but she actually feels her best was the work she was doing in the mid to the late 70's with Jaco and Mingus and she was never really one to look back and be overly sentimental about her early stuff. She was a restless artist who wanted to move ahead while most of her audience just wanted her to stay the way she was in '69, '70, '71... And as for the way that first record sounded, well again, those quotes from her about it weren't my words. Those were her words. And Crosby as well. AC hum, white noise, lack of clarity, sounds like it was under a tupperware bowl, etc. etc. That was all coming straight from them. I can't speak for the majority of Americans, and they're pronunciations of Mr. Nash's first name, because I really don't know all of them. But being from Texas, my best guess is that all of us dumb southern hicks would just call him "Gram" and no one would think twice about it. LOL. Thanks for watching!

    Billy, I have to commend you for your dedication to this project. It is clearly a labor of love for you. Changing gears for a minute, I watched Robert Hendrickson & Laurence Merrick's Oscar nominated documentary Manson (1973) this morning (it's available free on TH-cam). Towards the end, Squeaky Fromme & Sandra Good claim that the Tate-LaBianca murders were carried out as copycat crimes to the murder of Gary Hinman. They were hoping the LAPD would think the same killer who murdered Hinman was still on the loose, killing those at the 2 other places, and then would drop the case against Bobby Beausoliel. While it is a truly idiotic plan (since it took a long time for the LAPD to link all three crimes, even initially having 2 different teams investigate the Tate murders and the LaBianca murders), it sounds like something a career criminal like Manson would hatch in his demented mind. It certainly makes more sense than the Helter Skelter theory or the revenge against Terry Melcher (since it seems clear Manson knew Melcher had moved to Malibu). Also, the fact two of the key conspirators mentioned this in a film fairly contemporaneously with the actual crimes would seem to bolster the claim.

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yes,. I'm for sure familiar with this theory and the possibility that it was a major part of their many schemes. And yes, it would seem like a really stupid plan but not far fetched that they would try it anyway. I'm of the mind to think there were at least three, maybe even four possible motives in this crime and all of these converged together in Manson's evil plan and decision to target the house on Cielo Drive.

    Oooh, was that the GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously) swimming around in the Zappas' duck pond, I wonder?

      Probably! They all lived in Zappa's basement for about two months until he had some kind of falling out with a couple of them for bringing drugs into the house.

      It's soundproofing that's encased in a wooden frame. This is the room where I mix and master music and I need to keep sound from bouncing off of every wall and the ceiling as well. Thanks for watching!

    Good morning, sorry but I can't understand, maybe you can help me? If the cabin burned down in 1981, why are there videos today in which you can see the cabin with the intact lake precisely at 8205 on Lookout Montain Avenue? Can anyone 'help me? Thanks

      There were/are two homes on the property. The Tom Mix cabin burned down in 1981, which is the one that Frank Zappa also lived in for a brief time. The other house is known as the "Byrd House", and it's the one you're seeing in photos with a pond in front of it. It's still there.

    I've seen pictures of the Log Cabin basement from after the fire - do you know if it's still there? I just drove past and noticed the gates where knocked down...so I took a quick peak around to take some pics. Saw the stone stairs and back where the pools are in front of the guest house... but I didn't see the basement anywhere. I assume they cemented it in at some point but couldn't find any info on it. Might have to go back and investigate more!

      It's all still back in there but it's kept locked up behind chained doors.

    I believe Tom Constatine experimented with piano string harmonics with the Grateful Dead. Crosby was connected to the Bay Area scene.

    A quick question, did you mention something about The Farm recording studio in one of these intriguing Laurel Canyon episodes ?

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, no we didn't. The only one that comes to mind with that name is the one that Genesis used to record in, but that's in the UK.

    I’ve binge watched the Laurel Canyon series up to part #7, my question is… what’s with all the trash cans on the curb & in the streets?? Did you do all the filming on trash day or do the cans stay out on the curb permanently?? They are in every shot.

    • @memoryfield

      Haha. You are quite correct there. What it seemed like to me was that every single square inch of space in that area is at a premium and there just isn't enough room to put those things anywhere else. Some of the driveways aren't even long enough to fit a normal sized car in them without the back end still hanging out into the street.

    She didn't appreciate being "shown off" by Crosby but certainly appreciated his contacts. Never got Joni Mitchell; open tuned guitar with capo installed so minimal guitar skill required and rambling, aimless vocals over the top. Interesting about Crosby's "production techniques" though, just sounds like someone playing at being a producer with no idea what they're doing.
