    Yes, it has been pointed out to me many times now that the time Cass Elliot may have spent in the basement of the Canyon Country Store has possibly been exaggerated over the years by past owners of the store and used as an urban legend and a badge of honor by those who would possibly benefit from that legendary association. I have found an equal number of sources that say she did indeed stay down there in her very early days in Laurel Canyon, but the total amount of time she was there varies from source to source. Other sources have claimed she was either not there at all for any reason or that it was possibly only less than a week. I can't 100% verify any of this without there being some level of doubt so I'm sticking with the story in the video, and no, I'm not "taking it down" as some have asked. Mistakes happen and history gets a bit hazy over the years. And in case anyone wants to know... in the actual basement of the CC Store there are posters claiming that Cass "lived" down there and they'll all tell you that she did as well, even though most of them aren't old enough to have actually been there in 1965. I even had a brief email exchange with Owen Elliot (Cass' daughter) on facebook about this very topic and she claims that the story has been exaggerated and most likely did not happen in the way it has been described over the past 55+ years. My apologies. This would not be the only mistake I've made in all of this, if it's actually incorrect. The amount of information to be found and sifted thru is just staggering.

      It would be interesting to know if Cass ever had mail that was sent to her
      (including the original envelop ) that would have a post mark on the envelope, at that basement apt. I know you indicated people took things that belonged to her but probably not mail. So I wonder what happened to personal belongings like mail, or even bills and driver's license that could have had the basement address on these items?

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Would be interesting to know, but yeah, those would probably remain within the private hands of family members like her daughter. Either that or just gone with the history of other everyday items from those years. I get the feeling that she probably wasn't even there long enough to warrant the idea of having the address of the store sent out to anyone else. She made friends in the area very quickly, like Barry McGuire, and she probably ended up staying with other people within just a few weeks of getting to LC.

      It's hard to get it all right since it's been so long and even the celebrities themselves can't remember what was what. I've done research on it all for a book I wrote... I know the owner, Tommy, and he showed me the storage area apt down stairs and it's hard to know if she actually lived there for a short time - but - there is a ton of amazing history there and I love it. Was just there 2 nights ago eating at Pace. Best Salmon you'll ever eat!

    I was there! It was the highlight of my trip to the LA area. As it’s so happen the owner of the Canyon country store happen to be there and he gave my friend and I a tour downstairs of where mama Cass stayed for free when she first came to the canyon and he played music from the Doors, Love Street which was right across from the store and he said if we cut the guy that owned it now at the right time in the right mood, he might let us come in and give us a tour, but unfortunately that didn’t happen🙁 I waited my whole life to get to California and then when I finally got there, I was just in love with Laurel Canyon and if I could live there, I surely would❤❤❤ oh and of course he played The Mamas & The Papas song, young girls are coming to the Canyon. It was just so cool. I wish I had been able to be there during that very special time in history.

    I recently turned 70 and lived all of this time with my own experimentation! The predictable losses of so many of my youth musical heroes (most recently David Crosby and Jeff Beck) and my recent retirement have kindled an exploration into history of the most influential era of my life. That has just led me to your channel and work and I will be diving deep! Great work!

    My mom had a big old black trunk with a bunch of albums from the 60s and I started listening to them and fell in love with the music from the 60s my generation was the 80s but I still think the 60s had the best music.

    • @memoryfield

      No arguments there about the music of the 60's. It was a magical time and the music seems to have stood the test of multiple generations and will be around forever in one way or another. Thanks for watching!

      I think the best period was 1966-1976. Only drawback to some 60s music is a thin recording quality and dinky-sounding drums. Sound quality started to improve so drastically starting in about 1969. Compare the sound of the first and final Beatles recordings; the quality evolution over a mere 7-8 years is utterly jaw-dropping.

      Yeah, I was sorry to hear about some of that going on for a while over there and especially with those two. By the summer of 1969 the darker part of that scene really came back to haunt a lot of people who didn't realize all the real dangers to it and the people involved in it.

    Really enjoy getting to see this area and it's history. I came of age in this great area. I had many of these album covers. I read them over and over. Very nostalgic!!! Thanks ❤❤ P.S. today's kids unless they get into modern vinyl just can't appreciate the beauty and creativity found in album covers! Many showed shots of Laurel Canyon on the inside covers. If you were lucky enough to buy an album for $7.99 at 11, you called your best friend to come over and listen with you. It was an event!!! My first concert was HERMANS HERMITS from the UK. (my son was astounded that The Dave Clark 5 were as big as The Beatles in the day!)

      Yes, I agree. She was quite phenomenal, and I was happy to highlight her here in this first episode. She comes up again later in at least two other episodes and in those she is shown to also have some weaknesses and was prone to making a few bad mistakes along with some lapses in judgement. But it also shows that she was just human and had frailties just like the rest of us. It's just that she was in a place where she was wealthy and had great influence with her other peers in that community. It put her in a few compromising situations. Thanks for watching!

    That was a very nice, respectful and loving tribute to Cass Elliot. Almost all I've ever heard are unkind, mean spirited things. It's amazing how we no tolerance for making fun of someone for the color of their skin, sexual preference, etc. But it's still okay to make fun of someone for being overweight, and most disregard the fact that these people have feelings and are hurt by such hurtful, unkind words. I read several biographies about her, and the M&Ps, and I developed a tremendous respect for her as a singer, as a person and a vocalist. She doesn't get the credit she's due much of the time. I love your honesty about John Phillips. The guy was scum.

    Love all your videos Billy! They are such a treat! I appreciate all the hard work that you’ve done to bring this videos to us! One bit of John Phillips history is that he was having dinner with Roman Polanski after the Tate/LaBianca murders, and while they were preparing the meal, Roman threw a meat clever at him narrowly missing his neck. Phillips was in shock and asked him why he threw the clever. Polanski replied by asking him if he killed Sharon. The motive being that when Roan and Michelle were in Europe they had a brief affair. Michelle and Sharon were good friends, and Sharon was heartbroken when she found out, but Sharon forgave her and they would speak to each other throughout Sharon’s pregnancy. John was angry with Roman but they became friends again after Sharon’s funeral. Roman even admitted to breaking into Phillip’s car and put a chemical on seats and floor that shows up bloodstains. Just thought you’d like to know, if you didn’t already!✌️Cathy

    I had one more comment regarding your “Love Street” episode when you walk up the stairway called “Tavern Way”. My family settled in Park City, Utah after emigrating from Denmark back in 1872. Anyhow I was born there and spent about 15 years living in the town before we moved in 1980. The town is completely different from back then but getting to my point, there were numerous steep stairways around the town leading to paths so one could travel to other sections of the town. As a kid I would play on those stairway and they were a blast!!! Seeing that Tavern Way stairway reminded me of those days.❤

      I am going to search through my old family photos for some. I have a bunch of photos of my family in PC when the town was just still a mining town and it looks completely different. There is a “park” up by the Silver King Mine named after my great uncle Loran Larsen. It is along one of the ski runs, pretty awesome view from there. Sure do miss that place. I left Utah for good after finishing college and have not been back except to visit family. Unfortunately 2005 was the last time I was there. I grew up roaming the hills around the town and hiking all over that section of the Wasatch mountains, which happen to be one of my favorite spots on earth. Guardsman Pass was another place I roamed freely in nature, making myself home sick! I currently live in Oregon which I find quite beautiful as well but it is not Utah. If you are interested in seeing some of the photos of PC back from the 40-70’s, can email you them. I find the contrast from today’s town and the past quite interesting. Oh, my wife and I are truly enjoying your Laurel Canyon vids, so many cool stories and connections!!!

    another video suggestion for you.
    About four years ago, I was obsessing about the 50th anniversary of Woodstock and since January is a slow month for me, I had time to watch the full ‘Woodstock, The Movie’ while my wife was at work😅. I thought it be cool to do a video analyzing the movie as it goes along, pointing out who’s who. There is a lot of close-ups of people wandering around but I’m pretty sure the majority of these guys/gals are key people involved with the production and I thought it would be interesting to research this, which you’re very good at, and identify as many of these individuals as you can 👍.

    There was a free book online, the first one on the subject of the Laurel Canyon music scene written by a guy from Torrance (close to me) 20± years ago that I don't have access to right now but the connection (besides music) of all these iconic artists was also their parents and their employ in US Military Security which can't be coincidence. Key word ALL
    All of their parents were Gov.employed. His book was written chapter by chapter and published online and made me weep.
    .Its a taste you can never un-see. I have the PDF somewhere and pa girlfriend rinted it out too knowing it would disappear and it has. Its just a part of the story you should be aware of . There seems to be way too many new books written about the Canyon but none like this. Once he- you, put it all together you'll understand how we ended up right where we are at now. A place I never dreamed wed go. And it all fits ...as far as the putrid state of the mainstream news media spewing propaganda about our squeaky clean military who can do no wrong ever. Thank you tor your service training children to kill. Bla bla bla. Shoot me NOW.
    oh yea Lookout Mountain was an advanced military movie (and audio) special effects studio don't ya know. Right smack dab in Centerville. As a boomer musician growing up here this all broke my heart.

    • @memoryfield
      @memoryfield  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Believe it or not, there's actually a possible reason for that. It's because apparently someone sent a complaint to TH-cam about a reference we made to the use of drugs contained within this particular video. So TH-cam (Google) decided that the episode had to be changed over to "sensitive content" and/or "adult-oriented material not suitable for minors". That's the only reason we can think of that it's available on a password protected PC and not necessarily on a television. What's funny is that there are many, many other references made to drug-use in just about every single other episode in this series and none of them fall into this same category. I mean, come on, it was the late 1960's for crying out loud. LOL.

      I stayed at a Best Western, 7212 Sunset Blvd. that was very affordable compared to that whole area. Very close to the south entrance to Laurel Canyon. Still not cheap, though. As for the canyon itself, there's really no rhyme or reason to any of it back there. It's just a hodgepodge of little roads and every now and then you'll find a spot to pull over and park. The Canyon Country store has a parking lot but again, it can be difficult to walk anywhere from that spot because the main road thru the canyon is just jam-packed with high traffic at all hours of the day. There are NO sidewalks anywhere in that canyon. People walk on the roads. The further you get up in elevation, the quieter and less crazy it seems to get.

    My great grandmother and great grandfather Kenneth Vane Redpath, built their home in Laurel Canyon in about the very early years of the 1900's. My grandmother grazed her horses at the corner of Ventura Blvd and Balboa. She had a pet deer for 21 years at her home in Laurel Canyon. Her home had a turret in the front and it was on a corner. Inside there was a neat fire place with little shelves on it. Above your head was a cat walk that went from her bedroom to a room over the kitchen. Grandma Ethel Ellingston went to Hollywood High School and lived until her 68th high school graduation. Or there about’s. Great great grandma Sarah Baker Swain Lufkin lived under the "d" of the Hollywood sign on the Hollywood Hills, on Tuxedo Dr. Grandpa Redpath had various jobs as a food broker and he was in charge of circulation of the L.A. Times News Paper. Grandma Ethel and Grandpa Harry used to court one another by taking walks up Laurel Canyon…..unchaperoned! Grandpa Harry had holdings in Nome, Alaska that a banker handled for him after his parents died until grandpa Harry was of age. But they absconded with his money and started the Los Angeles Times News Paper‼️😠. FYI 😊 Ms. Jay Karen.

      The street "Redpath", is my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother Kenneth and Lottie Redpath, or in Scotland it is pronounced Ridpeth which meant "The Reed Path". It was a village of people who lived where you go through the reeds on a path. Through the years their name wound up being Redpath.

      @memoryfield  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, there is most definitely a long road in there known as Ridpath Drive and Episode 3 (both parts) cover it quite extensively. But I have to tell you, my memory of that street is that there were really no super old houses there that looked any older than the 1950's. If your grandparents lived on Ridpath in the early 1900's then most likely that house is long gone now. There are several houses on that street that are ultra-modern and probably were built very recently and on the same lots where some very old houses used to sit.
