I'm 42, been online since 1997, so like you I obviously 'get' the internet, my mother is 63, and while she doesn't get the humour, even she is able to tell the difference between a meme and an actual news story. I personally don't think it's anything to do with age, but a lack of critical thinking. Is it really that hard to look at something at say 'How likely is it this is true?' Although I do admit that modern day news can at times seem more oniony than the Onion.
