As a beginning sewist, this was so motivating to watch. I liked how you documented your thinking as you were altering the garment. I'm cropping a sweater now, too, except that I botched my hem. 🥺 You've given me the push to give it one more go.
Aw thank you for your kind words! Glad the video was helpful and I hope your sweater works out! When I attempted the sweater, I knew that if I ruined it at least I only paid $2 for it. Maybe you can get a cheap thrifted sweater to practice on!
@@VirginaLopez-e4pshe is using a serger in this video. If you don’t have one, you can do a zigzag stitch on a normal sewing machine, and just make sure to sew it more than once so that it doesn’t fray. You can look up tutorials for how to finish a garment without a serger, TH-cam has lots of advice for that
Thank you! I just shortened a cable knit cotton sweater using your method. It is thinner material to work with than wool. The finished band at the bottom had finished slits on each side so rather than cutting and shortening the length of the band, I overlapped the front band part at each side over the back part of the band and it gave it trendy look. Love it! Would never have considered or known how to do this before looking ar your demonstration.
Adorable!!! Now I’m motivated to fix all my sweaters! I love how happy you are after fixing your sweater. I know I will be just as excited. The little things. Love it. 😊
Looks great!! Wonderful work. I’m a quilter and very very rarely sew clothing. Was watching for inspo to alter an “ugly” Christmas sweater and found just what I need!!
This is sooo cute and also really helpful!! I'm glad a sewing machine could seal the edges so well, was worried I needed to crochet or knit the edges together. PHEW!
Looks terrific, and suits your size perfectly now. I love how honest you are with us. I learn a lot, as I work my way through my sewing projects, as well! I am going to trim in a large creamy white sweater this Winter. 💖❤💖💖💖💖💖❤💖💖💖💖💖❤
Awesome! Right on time for this coming season. Let me go find some sweaters to ruin before I finally get it right...even though you showed us exactly how to do it right the first time. lol Love your haircut, btw.
how do you sew the band so that the thread dows not break when you stretch it? Plus what do you do so the sweater knit does not get jammed up in the bobbin?
Hm these are great questions 😅 I didn’t do anything different or additional than what’s shown in this video. So luckily nothing got jammed, and the stitches I used didn’t seem to negatively affect the stretch… But at the same time, since the sweater is kind of oversized and wide, I don’t know that I’m ever actually stretching the sweater where the stitching is if that makes sense
Glad it was helpful! At 3:14 is what I used for my fake serge. If you’re wondering about tension settings, I don’t remember where it was at when I did this project, and honestly I still struggle with figuring out tension during all my projects 😅 I feel like my setting is usually somewhere in the middle, so that’s probably where it was during this project and I just got lucky that I didn’t have a problem with tension 😂
“Now I’m gonna go and crop all my sweaters” 🤣 I enjoyed watching this process since I also find myself second guessing and not knowing if I’m doing anything correctly
There is “fabric tape” or “hem tape” which is basically to hem or “sew” things but with tape instead of actually sewing it. I’ve never personally used it but I have some non-sewing friends that swear by it! I wasn’t sure if it would work on a knit sweater like this so I just googled it and came across this video- maybe this will work! m.th-cam.com/video/QMyoAFnO-Uk/w-d-xo.html
@@AngelaBagel Thanks! (I don't seem to be getting alerts on all my youtube comments anymore. 😮💨) I actually got Tear Mender fabric/leather glue on Amazon (just 2 oz size) & it is very easy to use. (I had actually picked up gorilla glue first in store - it's horrible imo.)
I wasn’t sure if you could either, but I’m so glad it worked out! Over 2 years later and it’s still my favorite sweater and has held up great!! And thank you so much! 😊
Oh awesome! Hope it turns out well! And I can’t remember what needle I had in there, but I didn’t change it from what I normally use. Not sure if that’s what I should have done 😄 but it worked out!
@@AngelaBagel Thanks! Last time I tried a less chunky knit, I had a bunch of skipped stitches with my universal needle, so that's why I was wondering :) I'll give it a shot and hope it goes smoothly

@@AngelaBagel I went out thrift shopping today to find a chunky sweater like your video so I could try to copy you but my thirst store didn’t have any I am going to keep trying
Hm, possibly! But I also ended up taking in the sides and making the original band smaller due to how big the sweater was. Luckily I didn’t have any issues with it unraveling while working on it 🙂

im glad you show us your mistakes, like not needing to cut the band on both sides lol. i always make mistakes!!!
